Rotman Commerce Alumni Mentorship Program – Speed Mock Interviewing Behavioural interviewing is the preferred interview method of our corporate partners. This method involves questions asked by the interviewer to help predict the employee’s future success based on actual past behaviours, instead of based on responses to hypothetical questions. During our speed mock interviewing event, you will have the opportunity to help 5 students by asking them behavioural interview questions during a 15 minute mock interview and providing them with feedback on their responses (evaluation forms will be provided at the event). To help students learn the most from this experience, we have drafted a sample job description to be used as a foundation for the development of your questions and for students to prepare for their mock interviews. Sample Job Description Management Trainee Program An internationally recognized, Canadian-owned company has dynamic opportunities for university graduates who have passion for success, strong academic and extracurricular performance and the potential to grow within our organization. The Management Trainee (MT) Program is a three-year rotational program with the goal of recruiting bright, talented individuals and growing them into tomorrow’s leaders. The Program gives recent university graduates the opportunity to gain experience and develop skills through diverse work experiences in different locations of the business. Participants spend one year in each of three placements learning about the business, contributing to that functional area, building networks and developing management and leadership skills. Following the three years of the program, successful MTs graduate into roles in the function of their choosing where they continue to grow their careers. The MT Program’s approach provides the optimal combination of practical, on-the-job experience and structured learning, which will launch you on the management fast track and prepare you for dynamic leadership opportunities. Here are some sample behavioural interview questions to help you get started on developing your own. Communication Skills 1. Describe a time when you were particularly effective in building relationships with internal contacts that led to increased cooperation. 2. Think of something you recently communicated that did not go as well as planned. 3. Tell me about a time you dealt with an irate customer. Interpersonal/Teamwork Skills 1. Tell me about a time when you solicited the help of someone outside your department to respond to a customer. 2. Describe a recent time where you offered encouragement and support to your peers. 3. Relate to me a situation where you have put your own agenda aside to help your team achieve its objectives. 4. Tell me about a time that your work was criticized. Analytical Skills 1. Tell me how you drew a conclusion recently that helped you achieve the desired results. 2. Describe a problem where you considered a number of different solutions that were suggested by others. 3. Thinking of a recent project, describe the potential problems were you able to anticipate successfully. To successfully answer these questions, students should use the "S.T.A.R." technique. They should describe the (S)ituation they were in or the (T)ask they needed to accomplish; describe the (A)ction they took, and the (R)esults.
