Red Cockaded Woodpecker
The NCSCP was formed in 2000 with the
specific intent to facilitate collaboration
between various federal, state, and non-
profit conservation groups for the purpose
of conserving the vanishing longleaf pine
ecosystem and recovering the
endangered red-cockaded woodpecker in
the North Carolina Sandhills. Partners of
the NCSCP represent the US Fish and
Wildlife Service, US Army, Army
Environmental Command, NC Wildlife
Resources Commission, NC Division of
Parks and Recreation, The Nature
Conservancy, Sandhills Area Land Trust,
and Sandhills Ecological Institute.

  BRAC 2005: Changes at Fort
  Bragg and Pope AFB

Ft. Bragg becomes the largest Army post in the
country, more than 65,000 soldiers and
employees.
U.S. Army Forces Command and Army Reserve
Command Headquarters transfer from Atlanta.
Pope AFB transfers to the Army.
BRAC law: Complete all actions by September
15, 2011.
BRAC 2005: Projected Impact
on Surrounding Communities

Population growth: projecting 40,000 additional
people
Creates shortage of schools, classrooms, and
teachers
Impacts housing, roads, airports, infrastructure
FORSCOM/USARC Headquarters will be the
catalyst for creating a defense industry
cluster.

BRAC Regional Task Force:
Purpose and Scope

Purpose: Unify the community planning effort.
Scope: Serve as the liaison between the military;
the communities in the organization; state and
federal agencies designated to provide
community assistance for BRAC.
Objective: Leverage the growth at Fort Bragg
to create a defense and homeland security
industry in southeastern NC, to transform the
economy, the workforce, and increase the
quality of life.
