KCS Dress Code and Orientation Information for 2006-07

The Kannapolis City School District has a uniform policy for grades K-8, and a new
dress code for grades 9-12. Below is information to help you plan your child’s back-to-
school wardrobe. At the bottom of this document, you will find information about back-
to-school orientation times for each school.

A.L. BROWN HIGH SCHOOL:
The 9-12 dress code allows four solid colors for shirts, sweaters, and sweatshirts: white,
gray, navy blue, or green. Shirts must be collared. Pants must not have decorations, and
skirts and shorts must be knee-level. Cargo pants and capris are allowed.

 Shirts must be collared – golf, polo or oxford-style
 Shirts must be tucked in
 Small logos – no bigger than a thumb – are allowed
 Plain sweatshirts and sweaters of the four solid colors are allowed
       Pants:
 Colors are black, blue, or khaki without decoration of any kind. Shorts
must be at least knee level in length.
 Pants and shorts must fit properly on the hips
 Pants with holes or chains are NOT acceptable.
 Pants and shorts can be blue or black jeans, cotton or corduroy (cargo
pants are acceptable). Spandex and sweatpants are not allowed during the
              school day.
 Females may wear skirts that come to the knee. They also may wear
              Capri pants.
       Jackets:
 No hooded jackets of any type are allowed.
 Jackets are not to be worn in the buildings once students arrive at school.
       Headwear:
 No headgear of any type will be allowed unless students wear toboggans
or hats as they arrive at school or leave in the afternoon on cold days.
 Hats, do rags, hoods, or bandanas are not to be worn on campus.

The general framework of our K-8 uniform policy is that all shirts must have collars, and
no insignias are allowed except for school logos. Our policy also requires pants, shorts,
skirts, and skorts to be made of a twill-like material (no jeans). Students in grades 5
through 8 must wear belts if their bottom wear has belt loops. Older elementary students
also may be required to wear belts. However, younger children, such as Kindergartners
and first graders, will not have to wear belts. Please check with your elementary school
principal to find out specifics on what your school’s rules will be regarding belts for
uniforms.

Here are a few other rules from the K-8 uniform policy:

       Shirts and Blouses
Golf or polo shirts, turtlenecks, and “oxford” shirts, are fine. Tops must
be one solid color, and they must be tucked in at all times.

       Bottom Wear
Boys may wear shorts or pants. Girls may wear shorts, pants, skirts, or
jumpers. “Cargo” pants and bottom wear with more than one color are
not allowed. The length of shorts and skirts must be at least as long as the
student’s longest fingertip when holding both arms straight down by the
             side.

       Sweaters, Sweatshirts, and Undershirts
Sweaters, sweatshirts, and visible undershirts must be white or be one of
the uniform colors designated by your school [or grade level].

       Jackets
Jackets may not be baggy or oversized and may not be worn in class
                 unless the student’s teacher approves.

       Shoes
Shoes may not have open toes or open heels, and they must be tied or
                 properly fastened at all times.

       Headwear
Headwear—including bandanas, rags, headbands, scarves, hats and
combs—may not be worn on campus. However, on cold days it will be
fine for students to wear toboggans or hats as they arrive at school or
            leave in the afternoon.

If you think you may need financial help to provide uniforms for your child, please make
a written request to your child’s principal. We will work with families in need to make
sure children have uniforms to wear.

If you have any other questions, please contact your child’s school. The first day of
school for next year will be Friday, August 25.

Have a safe and happy summer, and we look forward to seeing you in August.
