The situation:

Assume you are an organizational behavior consultant. You have been assigned to work with a large
U.S. based electronics company (LEC Corp) who is planning a VERY bold move. They have retaine d
your firm to provide guidance.

LEC Corp. has been struggling to keep their market share, and maintain profitability. Their bold plan
is embrace many of the “newer” business strategies, namely:

        (1) Expand into the global market
        (2) Change to a team-based workplace (in both US and global operation)
        (3) Improvement of both personal and organizational communication
        (4) Gain customer sentiment and loyalty by paying closer attention to busine ss ethics.

More background:

 LEC Corp. is a rather old fashioned company, very autocratic, tall vertical structure,
                centralized decision making, etc.
 They design and manufacture power supplies and circuitry used in almost all computer
equipment and high tech large scale applications
 The market is strong but expense s (mostly health benefits and labor) are killing profits
                and growth

 They are considering moving customer service, manufacturing functions outside of US
and adding sales office s throughout the world.

Task/Questions:

(1) Addresses: (1) Expand into the global market

LEC Corp. is attempting to find the right country to base their new int ernational operations. They are
also concerned about maintaining their company culture as much as possible

        (a) Prepare briefing notes for LE C about the issue.
        (b) Provide a short list of potential locations.
       (c) Explain your reasons for your recommendations.

       HINT: Think Hofstead!

(2) Addresses: Change to a team-based workplace (in both US and global operation)

LEC Corp. is very naïve about teamwork. They need to understand some of the fundamental issues
(pro and cons) and generally gain a better understanding of teamwork.

       (a) Prepare briefing notes for LE C about the issue.
       (b) Provide a list of simple rules they could us e

(3) Addresses: Improvement of both personal and organizational communication

During LE C Corp’s last employee satisfaction survey it was clear that poor communication was
increasingly becoming a problem in their US based operations, now with the planned globalization
there are aware that they need to address the communication problem.

       (a) Prepare briefing notes for LE C about the issues
       (b) Review for them the “process communication model” and common sources of error (including
where in the model the errors occur)
       (c) How might their international operations further complicate communication?

(4) Addresses: Gain customer sentiment and loyalty by paying closer attention to busi ness ethi cs.

LEC Corp’s senior management understands that aggressively confronting ethics is their
responsibility and the move into the international water only complicate the issue. They current
have no internal mechanisms, infrastructure or policies.

       (a) Prepare briefing notes for LE C about the issue
       (b) What kind of internal processes need to be put into place?
       (c) Identify issues specific to international operations

NOTE: Briefing note s are a quick summary of the issue in bullet points.

Section Two:

1. Motivation - if a panel discussion were possible between Maslow, Herzberg, Adams (equity
theory) and Porter and Lawler, how would each respond to the statement

Pay is the most effective tool management has for motivating the
               performance of its workers”
