January 30, 2005 100 YEARS OF COMMUNITY CUMC’s Mission Statements
CUMC is guided and informed by three Mission Statements, one adopted by our local church, one by our California-Pacific Conference of United Methodism, and the third being the Mission statement of the worldwide United Methodist Church. CUMC’s own Mission Statement was developed and adopted by our Administrative Board in 1993. It declares: “Community United Methodist Church is an inclusive family of faith, striving to nurture loving, supportive relationships, empowering persons to growth in Christian faith in order to serve the community.” Our California-Pacific Annual Conference, embracing the nearly 400 United Methodist Churches of Southern California, Hawaii, and the Pacific Islands, adopted this Vision Calling Statement in 1998: Following the example of Jesus Christ... Bridging the barriers that divide us... Drawing strength from one another through the power of the Holy Spirit... We, the California-Pacific Annual Conference, covenant with God to cultivate, in partnership with local churches, new ministries and new disciples, new leadership and new life for such a time as this.”
And the United Methodist Church as a whole as the General Conference in 1996 proclaimed the following mission: The mission of the Church is to make disciples of Jesus Christ. Local churches provide the most significant arena through which disciple-making happens.
