Review Sheet: The Ancient Israelites (1220 BCE - 0) Important note: Don’t let the lack of space keep you from answering each question fully. No “I don’t knows” will be accepted. When and Where 1. Ground yourself in your timelines. What else was going on during the times the Israelites flourished. Given when they are, what is true of what you’d expect of this culture, and what is different? 2. Revisit the map of the Middle East. What is true of the region that may influence the culture? What spots are significant? What 1. Aside from monotheism, what was unique about the Hebrew religion at this time in history? Your reading mentioned the “three special aspects” of the religion, and there is one other we’ve discussed. 2. Analyze the unique characteristics above: why were they important to not only Hebrew people, but to non-Hebrews today? 3. In what ways was the Hebrew God different from gods of other religions? Give specific examples to support your statement. 4. Characterize Israelite law? Who delivered it? What makes it the same from other codes we’ve read and what makes it different? 5. Support from the text that the Ancient Hebrews were a heavily patriarchal society. 6. How does the governing structure of the ancient Hebrews change over time and why? 7. Characterize the three monarchs we’ve studied. How do they compare to other leaders we know such as the emperors of Rome? 8. What is the Tenakh and how is it subdivided? 9. What might be implicated if two different chapters of the Torah call God by different names? 10. Secondary source question: to come. Take brief notes about the following stories INCLUDING where they are in the text, what they’re about, and what’s significant. Know the stories well enough to be able to see them in painting or other passages of literature. Finally, be able to recognize passages from the Hebrew scriptures or allusions to them, both that you’ve read and that you have not. First, identify the passage, and support your identification. Then, discuss the possibility of the significance, making connections to other passages you’ve read, the history of the people, or other cultures we’ve studied. 1. He must present it at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting so that it will be acceptable to the LORD . 4 He is to lay his hand on the head of the burnt offering, and it will be accepted on his behalf to make atonement for him. 5 2. 1 Answer me when I call to you, O my righteous God. Give me relief from my distress; be merciful to me and hear my prayer. 2 How long, O men, will you turn my glory into shame? How long will you love delusions and seek false gods? Selah 3 Know that the LORD has set apart the godly for himself; the LORD will hear when I call to him. 4 In your anger do not sin; when you are on your beds, search your hearts and be silent. Selah 5 Offer right sacrifices and trust in the LORD . 3. Judgment on Jerusalem and Judah 1 See now, the Lord, the LORD Almighty, is about to take from Jerusalem and Judah both supply and support: all supplies of food and all supplies of water, 2 the hero and warrior, the judge and prophet, the soothsayer and elder, 3 the captain of fifty and man of rank, the counselor, skilled craftsman and clever enchanter. 4 I will make boys their officials; mere children will govern them. 5 People will oppress each otherman against man, neighbor against neighbor. The young will rise up against the old, the base against the honorable.
