         Citizens’ Interest in Recycling

• Newcomers to Kannapolis
  most likely come from
  communities that offer
  recycling.
• In addition to new residents,
  many existing residents
  desire to have curbside
  recycling as a service
  provided by the City.
• In March 2008, we
  conducted a survey of our
  citizens to gauge their
  interest.

Q.3 If it cost $5.00 a month for curbside recycling and you were provided with a recycling bin
free of charge, how likely would you be to use curbside recycling?
                                                                                                 5
            Advantages of Recycling
• Reduces waste stream to landfill
  • Kannapolis residents produce on average 1-ton of
waste per home each year of which 20% (400 lbs.)
at a minimum can be recycled.
  • If each of our residents actively participates in the
program; thereby reducing their waste stream by a
minimum of 20%, it could reduce our annual solid
    waste disposal cost by $126,000.
• Positive response to public demand
• Environmentally correct thing to do

    Advantages of Recycling - Continued

• An aggressive recycler
  can reduce their
  household waste stream
by 45% or 900 lbs per
  year. This includes
  composting food wastes.
• In 2003 NC had only 16
  years of landfill space
  remaining.

                  Types of Recycling
• Site Based
  • Containers for paper,
    plastics, glass, steel and
    aluminum
• Curbside
  • Dual Stream – the
    collector must separate
    recyclables from bins into
    a compartmentalized
    truck.
  • Single Stream – no
    separation required,
    allows use of roll-out
    container. 8
