So What?
A presentation on global warming
August Sophie
What is Global Warming?
• Global warming is an increase in the earth’s average temperature.
What Causes Global Warming?
• An increase use of fossil fuels •Fossil fuels are used to provide energy for: •Cars •Trucks •Boats •Planes •Heat for factories and homes
What is the Greenhouse Effect?
Gases in the atmosphere trap the infrared rays from the sun These gases and rays keep the earth warm causing the greenhouse effect. An increase in greenhouse gases traps too much heat in the atmosphere causing the average temperature to rise.
What are Greenhouse Gases?
• Fuel used to heat homes and provide energy for cars release greenhouse gases into the air. • Greenhouse gases trap heat in the atmosphere. • An increase in greenhouse gases is not good for the environment
What’s the Big Deal?
Global warming can: cause a rapid rise in sea level Reduce the amount of land for crops Increase temperature of the air The methane gas that is trapped under the ice could be released into the atmosphere having bad effects on the environment
Effects on the World
• Animals are becoming extinct in some areas • Increase in air temperature may cause health problems • Glaciers are melting • Sea level is rising causing coastal areas to disappear
How You Can Make a Difference
• Recycle • Turn off lights • Use cloth bags • Carpool • Have a small car
