Progress, also supported by SU:GRE
●Country wise
– increasing compliance to directive 30/2003 in EU27
• Romania implements blending and follows others • Sweden leads in terms of incentives but also The Netherlands exempts rapeseed oil from taxation
●Fleets
– Zagreb bus fleet changing to Biodiesel – Truck and Bus fleets changing to PPO/SVO in Styria, Munic Airport, Hasselt... – CNG buses are used in 6 Slovak towns, Malmö, Barcelona, Rome, Paris, Torino, Athens, Zagreb... – 16 Hybrid buses testing in London, Hertz adds 3,400 HEVs to its fleet
●Manufacturers
– Peugeot allows for B30 – New CNG cars appeared (VW...) – New FFVs appeared (Renault, Peugeot) – Hybrid buses and vans appear (Solaris,Mercedes Sprinter,Cleanova..)

Discussion (Findings so far)
●Opportunities
– climate change supported in the media - first stable markets for biofuel vehicles – mature hybrid electric technology. – Biofuels give even better engine efficiency, if the engine layout is adapted. This lowers the absolute biofuel demand (with a 20% blend). – Hybrid power train reduces the requirements for the energy converter and allow new fuels and new engine concepts. – Lacking capital for development of direct injection methane engines and high compression ratio ethanol engines for the mass market. – Lobbying for design fuels (diesel) caused by economic concerns of industry slows down the exploitation of existing biofuel technology. – Research has stopped in Europe while waiting for 2nd generation biofuels. This includes:
• capturing evaporative emissions of ethanol • avoiding carry-over of biodiesel into motor oil • EEV/EURO5 emission control management for biodiesel/pure plant oil
●Threats
– Vehicles will not become that efficient that 20% biofuel blend are achieved
