Matilda Children’s Foundation Together we can make a BIG Difference to Little Lives 如欲查看中文資訊,請按 CDROM:\chinese 30 Aug 06.pps (last updated on 30 August 2006) Our Aim To promote and provide help and comfort to underprivileged children from Hong Kong and China who require life-changing surgery and have no other means of receiving care. Matilda International Hospital  In 2003, the Matilda Children’s Foundation was set up by the Hospital to raise money to provide life changing surgery for children in need.  Our staff and doctors are volunteers and dedicated to the foundation donating time, money and resources to enable surgery to take place. Making a difference, together… Through the dedication and generosity of many, from the hospital and the caring community of Hong Kong we are making a BIG difference to little lives and would like to share our work with you in the following slides: Wu Jianchun – Born in 1997 WU, Jianchun was 6 years old and living in an orphanage after being abandoned at birth. He suffered from ExstrophyEpispadias complex which made him incontinent. His smile says it all His dream came true with his first day at school in 2004. This was made possible with a 15 hr operation (2003) to reposition his bladder, close his pelvis and reconstruct his urethra and penis. His bladder capacity has increased and now he is continent and able to attend school. Follow up investigations planned in 2007, sponsorship of HK$7,500 needed. Xu Jian Yang – Born in 1996 XU, JianYang was 9 years old and suffered from Spina Bifida with deformities of lower spine, legs & feet. He used to leak urine constantly which made his life miserable with recurring infections and cruel bullying and rejection from other children. Thanks to the foundation (offered life changing surgery in 2005), Xu is now out of diapers for the first time in his life and has found hope for a brighter future. As he is still lacking bladder fullness sensation, he needs to practice passing urine and requires periodic urological assessment. quarterly follow up required, each requires HKD1,000 Xu with his mum, 2005 Jamie FU Wen Dong – Born in 2003 Jamie, 1 ½, was abandoned by his parents probably due to his spina bifida. Despite this he is growing stronger with time and can move around in a walker, though unable to walk on his own yet as he is still weak. He is generally a happy child but his urinary system is at risk of damage without proper urological care. The Matilda Children’s Foundation brought him to Hong Kong for a complete urological assessment in 2005 and prescribed a management strategy to prevent kidney failure. Jamie was adopted in America and has a bright future thanks to all our generous supporters. Tiffany, FU Xiao Tian – Born in 2005 Tiffany suffered from spina bifida and because of her circumstances was not operated on until 4 months old. The site was repaired and a VP shunt placed to prevent hydrocephalus however Tiffany was in and out of hospitals because her shunts kept becoming infected. She was paralyzed below her waist and her big head (hydrocephalus) make movement even more difficult. Although it was touch and go if she would make it She has a beautiful The Matilda Children’s Foundation did manage smile which she shows off liberally. to bring her to HK in 2005 for a full assessment her urinary tract to prevent kidney problems, and neurological progress. Despite the best of care and tenderest of love Tiffany passed away in 2006 and now rests in peace. Josie, FU Wen Ling – Born in 2004 Josie was born with spina bifida and although the spinal cord was surgically repaired she leaks urine. She is now fostered by a Chinese family. Although she is a bit delayed in her development, Josie has begun speaking and has just learned to take a few steps on her own. The Matilda Children’s Foundation brought her to HK in 2005 and assessed her bladder pressure, the results were encouraging and will help her maintain her urinary system in healthy condition. Aidan – JIN Li Xi Born in 2004 Aidan aged 1, is paralyzed from the waist down since birth due to spina bifida and has a shunt in place. She is a friendly and contented baby who is generally quiet but very attentive of her surroundings. She can sit for small amounts of time without support and enjoys to play with her toys. Aidan cannot empty her bladder. The foundation has screened her bladder (in 2005) to monitor the pressures and prevent kidney failure and enable her to survive. Update (2005) - Sam FU, born in 2004 Sam was born with ambiguous genitalia in a village in Northern China. His parents left him probably because of his abnormality. He is a very bright child and likes to smile all the time. Thanks to the Foundation, Sam’s problem was corrected by reconstructive surgery in 2006. He is now back to his foster family in China. DANG Daijan, born in 2002 Daijan was a 4 year old orphan boy with bladder exstrophy epispadias, an abnormal bladder and genitalia which results in incontinence. Although reserved at first, once you broke the ice, he would tell you his favourite cartoon character! The foundation brought him to HK from his foster home in China and performed a primary repair in 2006. He is now back to his foster home and enjoys his pre-school lessons with other children. DANG Jianyu, Joey, born in 2005 Joey was an infant who has exposed badder and epispadias since birth and was abandoned. He was a happy boy, bright and needing lots of cuddles. The foundation brought him to HK from his foster home in China and performed a primary repair in 2006. He was then diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour and passed away peacefully in 2007 having touched many hearts. CHEN, Hongjiao – born in 1994 Hongjiao, a 11 year old from a farming village in Sichuan has a congenital condition of meningomyelocele causing an enormous soft tissue swelling over her lower back. This, and the neurological impairment, left her increasingly disabled. Her meningomyelocele was removed in 2006 thanks to the foundation and she is starting the long process of learning to walk again. Shi Bao Yi – born May 06 Shi Bao is currently in the Matilda International Hospital (May 07) having undergone an anoplasty and is preparing for surgery to reverse her colostomy. Her care is complicated by only having one kidney and with recurrent urine infections she is at risk of losing kidney function. An orphan, her short life has been fraught with difficulties. With the help of the foundation and caring people surrounding her we hope to make a big difference. If you would like to sponsor her care please see details at the end of this presentation. Haui Yun Chun – born in 2001 Haui, an orphan from China, had a benign ‘ Rhabdomyoma’ tumour on her tongue that impaired her speech and would eventually obstruct the mouth leading to difficulty in breathing and eating. Thanks to the Children’s Foundation the tumour was removed in January 2007 when she was 5 years old. Although shy she returned to her orphanage with a big smile. Our work has just begun ……. We now have a long list of children who are in need of life-changing surgery that have no other means of assistance.
