CDF’s Mission
The mission of the Children's Defense Fund (CDF) is to Leave No Child Behind® and to ensure every child a Healthy Start, a Head Start, a Fair Start, a Safe Start, and a Moral Start in life and successful passage to adulthood with the help of caring families and communities. CDF provides a strong, effective voice for all the children of America who cannot vote, lobby, or speak for themselves. We pay particular attention to the needs of poor and minority children and those with disabilities. Founded in 1973 by Marian Wright Edelman, CDF is a private, nonprofit organization supported by foundations, corporations, and individual donations. We have never taken government funds. Children’s Defense Fund - New York In 1992, CDF opened an office in New York, a state where 1.2 million children live in poverty, and now has offices in both New York City and Albany. Our unique approach to improving conditions for children by combining research, public education, policy development, community organizing and advocacy activities, has made us an innovative and tireless leader for New York's children.
