ILLINOIS STATE TEST RESULTS AND SCHOOL REPORT CARD The ISAT test results from last spring will be mailed home in the coming week. Students in fourth grade will receive results in reading and math from third grade. Students in fifth grade will receive results in reading, math and science from fourth grade. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the test results, please call your child’s teacher or the principal. The district and school report cards will not be posted until the end of October. A notice will be sent home when they are available on the district web site. CRISIS DRILLS Each year, Edison School practices a crisis drill in the event of real-life crisis. This week, students and staff practiced a Code Red Drill. A Code Red Drill is for a serious emergency when all students and staff must take cover due to a dangerous situation in the building. We practice these drills so that we are prepared in the event of an emergency. We have never needed to call a Code Red in the school, but it is important to be prepared. Your child’s safety is our number one concern. ADOPTION OF BUDGET FOR FISCAL YEAR 2009 On September 16, 2008, the Board of Education approved the 2008-2009 School District Budget. The budget is available on the District Website at http://www.skokie69.k12.il.us/docs/200809_AdoptedBudget.pdf. PTA BRINGS FACE TO FACE PRODUCTIONS “GEORGE WASHINGTON FOLLIES” This week our PTA sponsored assemblies performed by Face to Face Productions. The production of the “George Washington Follies” was a delightful presentation tapping into students’ background knowledge of American and world history. All students were invited to participate in a community spirit song led by Confucius. In addition many of our students volunteered to perform in Cleopatra’s runway show and King Charlemagne’s trivia game. Thank you to our PTA for sponsoring such a dynamic show and to our many students who participated in the performance. FUND 69 Walk – a - Thon Come out for a great family event and help District 69 schools in the process! The annual FUND 69 Walk th – a – Thon will be held tomorrow, October 4 . All members of the District 69 community will be represented as we walk to all three schools. Also, at the walk there will be refreshments and a raffle of various prizes for students. LUNCHROOM NEWS Families will receive a letter every two weeks if their child’s account is below $10.00. This is our way of letting you know that it is time to deposit more money into your child’s lunch account. When sending money, please send cash or checks in an envelope labeled with your child’s name and room number – do not send coins. Checks should be made out to District 69. INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC PARENT NIGHT Any student interested in participating in one of our beginning instrumental music programs must attend the parent information night on October 14, 2008 at 6:30 p.m. NOTES TO THE OFFICE If you plan to pick up your child early from school, a parent or guardian must write a note indicating the following information: student’s full name, student’s room number, the time of pick-up, reason for leaving school early and who will pick up the student. Thank you for your cooperation. Parent Information Many people I talk to ask me why we give our students so many tests throughout the year. We started the year assessing students in the areas of math and reading using our MAP test, AIMSweb benchmarks, and other classroom based assessments. We end the year with similar tests and the state required ISAT test each March. Depending on who you talk to, you’ll get many different types of responses as to why these tests are administered. For us, here at Edison, assessments are the work we do to bring learning into the open. They are how we inform our understanding of not just what students are learning, but how they are learning. They provide us with insight to support how we teach certain skills or even whether it is worth teaching again. Assessments tell us what our students already know so that we are not boring them with repetitive information. Assessments are also a way we can track the rate at which our children learn. They help us identify when someone is catching on quickly, struggling with a particular concept, or growing a rate consistent with their age and ability. Conferences are a great time to touch base with your child’s teacher to hear about the various assessments given and what that says about your child’s learning.
