TEACHER TIPS
You will need to click the mouse to show answers for activities. This will allow you to control the timing of answers shown. We suggest that students keep a journal.

It is critical for students to use writing skills to explain their answers. Please take time to discuss possible solutions to problems.

This activity will address the following State Math Standards:
Develop and apply strategies (such as making a list, drawing a picture, looking for a pattern, acting out the problem) to predict, prevent, and solve a wide variety of problems. (MO 3.2, 3.3)
Use problem solving approaches to explore and construct meaning from mathematical content. (MO 1.6, 3.4, 3.5, 3.7)

Dana bought some new clothes for school. She laid them all out on her bed. She had 5 blouses, 3 skirts and 4 pairs of shoes, all which matched.
However…...

Dana told her mother that she had nothing to wear on the first day of school. Her mother told her that she could wear a different outfit every day of the month.

Is Dana’s mother correct? Make an organized list showing all possibilities in your math journal.

Dana could wear a different outfit everyday of the month! To find the answer...

...you would have to multiply the number of blouses by the number of skirts, by the number of shoes.
5 BLOUSES x3 SKIRTS

That equals fifteen different outfits already.

Then, take each of those fifteen outfits and place each outfit with each of the four pairs of shoes and …

15 outfits x 4 pairs of shoes= 60 outfits
WOW! That makes 60 outfits that Dana can wear to school.
