                                                         FROM THE COMMANDER
Congratulations to all new Post, SAL and Auxiliary Officers. I look forward to
working with all of you in the year ahead.

June 14 is Flag Day. I encourage all members of the Post 62 family to take time
to attend the SAL flag disposal ceremony at the Elks and please be sure to stay
for the second half of the ceremony inside the Elks. As you know the American
Legion is the nation’s leading supporter of flag advocacy and the photo at the left
is a prime example why – because Americans have fought and died for the freedoms symbolized by our flag. Display the
colors proudly! Some background on Flag Day from the Library of Congress is included in this month’s eNews.

Congratulations to SAL Squadron 62 for their outstanding showing at the State Convention! I also wish to send a Post 62
Happy Father’s Day wish to all Dads, and to say Happy Birthday to all of our U.S. Army comrades.

A final thought – please remember that Post 62 is a volunteer organization and we can always use a helping hand and
fresh ideas. Please get involved and ask a friend to get involved. Help out on a kitchen night, serve on a committee, or
organize an activity. Just spend a few minutes with a Post, Auxiliary or SAL officer and outline your interests or skills and
he or she will try to steer you in the right direction.

– John McDonald, Commander

Congratulations to Squadron 62 members. At the 47 State Convention, the Squadron was awarded the State
Commander’s Award for the largest “Gifts for Yanks” donation for 2010, and was one of eight (out of 300+ Squadrons) to
win the State Commander’s Program Award for 2010. We were also recognized by the VA&R Committee for our
fulfillment of our pledge of over $2,000.00 to the Canines for Combat Veterans. We were the only squadron to be
presented more than one award and thanks go to every member for your continued support. All the squadrons in the
state combined for an new record amount to the Child Welfare Foundation of over $69,000.00. We missed winning the
best VA&R State Award by just a few points. Even though we contributed the most dollars in the state, we didn’t have
enough volunteer hours, which we will work on this year.

Origins of Flag Day from the Library of Congress website:
  “Resolved, that the Flag of the thirteen United States shall be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white;
that the Union be thirteen stars, white on a blue field, representing a new constellation. “

On June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress approved the design of a
                                national flag.

Since 1916, when President Woodrow Wilson issued a presidential
proclamation establishing a national Flag Day on June 14, Americans have
commemorated the adoption of the Stars and Stripes by celebrating June
14 as Flag Day. Prior to 1916, many localities and a few states had been
celebrating the day for years. Congressional legislation designating that
date as the national Flag Day was signed into law by President Harry
Truman in 1949; the legislation also called upon the president to issue a
                                flag day proclamation every year.

According to legend, in 1776, George Washington commissioned Philadelphia
seamstress Betsy Ross to create a flag for the new nation. Scholars debate this
legend, but agree that Mrs. Ross most likely knew Washington and sewed flags.
To date, there have been twenty-seven official versions of the flag, but the arrangement of the stars varied
according to the flag-makers' preferences until 1912 when President Taft standardized the then-new flag's
forty-eight stars into six rows of eight. The forty-nine-star flag (1959-60), as well as the fifty-star flag, also
have standardized star patterns. The current version of the flag dates to July 4, 1960, after Hawaii became the
fiftieth state on August 21, 1959. # # #
