I’m located at the Orange county Sheriff’s Office with uh, Iassen? ID: Iassen. YM: Iassen. Thank you; sorry. Iassen, Donovan. And uh, Iassen, would you please state your name and date of birth for the record? ID: YM: My name Iassen Yurev Donovan. I was born And Iassen, you’re aware this is being recorded? sir. ID: Yes YM: Any objection to that? ID: No. YM: Okay. I called you yesterday and I asked you if you can come down and talk to me. You agreed and uhm, you came down of your own volition. And we walked upstairs. We went through a couple of doors with keypads. I just want to let you know that for the record that none of the doors are locked. If you feel uncomfortable at any time, or if you want to leave, by all means you, you’re free to leave. You’re not in custody so to speak. We sat here and talked a little bit before off the record and I explained to you what I was going to be asking you. It’d be about relationship, or you friendship with uh, Casey Anthony. And describe that for me in your own words. How long have you known her? How would you describe your relationship? ID: We met in uh, officially met in January of ’07. Uhm, she was dating my good friend, Brandon Snow. And uh, I met up with them for a football game. And then uh, since then we just became really good friends. Uhm, s…this year in ’08, there’s been periods where she’s dated Tony and the other guy. I don’t remember his name. The Hispanic. YM: Ricardo? ID: Ricardo. When she would date either or of them she would kind of not hang out with like me and Sean in big groups. I wouldn’t see her as often. YM: And you say uh, you and Sean, Sean Daly, Jonathan Daly, you guys are, are friends, roommates? ID: YM: Roommates, friends, yeah (affirmative). Okay. So you’ve known her since January. How would you describe her as a uhm, how would you describe her as a mother? ID: I’ve uh, (sighs), seen her around Caylee once. That was at her second birthday party at her house. And uh, she was fine. She was uhm, she was a good mother. She uh, spoiled her kid. YM: ID: YM: And the second, the birthday party was at Casey’s house? It was at her, Casey’s parents’, yeah (affirmative). Was that, you say that you saw her once. Okay. Uhm, what about Casey? What was she like away from Caylee? Did you spend time with her? Go out and have dinner and drinks and…. ID: She…. YM: ID: …and stuff like that? Yeah (affirmative), she always went out and we always went downtown. She would come for our parties. She wasn’t a heavy drinker. Uhm, I’ve never seen her do drugs. You know I, I’ve heard, and oh, like in ’08 she has like weed and popping pills. But I’ve never, never seen it. In ’07 she never did. Uhm, every time she was at a party she would leave early, drink light. YM: When you say uhm, in ’07 she never did, did, did you know her to, to smoke marijuana in, in ’07? ID: YM: No. I never even heard (inaudible), no. And there was no popping pills, uh…. ID: No… YM: …prescription; ID: No. YM: ID: But in ’08 you said that marijuana and pills? You know that I’ve heard uhm, like hanging out with the, the friends that she met at uh, Fusion, so I heard, I, I really haven’t hung out with her…. YM: Uh-hum ID: (affirmative). otherwise? …all the time she worked there as, or has been with Tony. So, I can’t really speak anymore for her. YM: Did uhm, did you hear from, from friends close to her? Like she has a good friend named Annie Downing. And I know they’ve kept in a lot of contact both when she went to jail, uh, or as she, as soon as she got out of jail that, yeah (affirmative), Annie’s pretty much uh, still trying to be at her side. ID: Yes. YM: There was uhm, there were people out there uh, saying that you know, her and Annie were into Zanax and popping some pills. What do you know about that? ID: I’ve talked to Annie about it. She said it’s not true. Uhm, Annie’s a good friend of mine. But it’s just what she told me. I, I’ve never heard it before. I know she was uhm, prescribed Zanax I think for anxiety. YM: Who ID: Annie. YM: Annie ID: was? was? Or for some, for some kind of med…uhm, med…medical treatment. But uh, I don’t know of her sharing it. YM: ID: Do you uhm…when was the last time you actually saw Casey? It was uhm, let’s see, maybe three weeks before she got arrested. We were at Buffalo Wild Wings. She brought Tony. It was for a UFC, it was a, for a UFC fight. It was at Buffalo Wild Wings on, in Waterford Lakes. YM: ID: YM: ID: YM: And do you recall when that was? You said about two weeks…. Exact date; it was like two, three weeks before, before her arrest. And was she with anyone? She was with Tony. Alright. So we all, we were all together. YM: Uhm, so that was two weeks before. Uh, before that time at Buffalo Wild Wings when, when did, when was the last time you remember seeing her? ID: Again, it was at Buffalo Wild Wings, probably a week before. It uh, just the four of us. Uhm, I know Tony was in New York at uh, at a Yankee’s game, because we saw him on TV. YM: Okay. ID: YM: ID: Uh, again, specific date I don’t know. You saw him on TV at a Yankee game? She said she saw him on TV. That he had uh, front row. And we all were just watching. It was me, Brandon Snow, Sean Daly, her and uh, uhm, a girl named Leila. YM: Okay. Uh, did Case talk to you uhm ,over the past couple of months, I want to say I guess earlier this year, did she say she was having any problems? Uhm, was she expressing to you any problems with Caylee? Any problems with being a mom? Any problems with her family, her mother, or her brother or her father? ID: She never talked about uh, Caylee. Like I just, like I said, I’d only seen Caylee once. Uhm, I never asked, I never asked about her home life. I didn’t, I never thought that’d be an issue. Uhm, I know there was no problems with Lee. YM: Uh-hum ID: (affirmative). I know, I remember her mentioning you know, she loves that guy. Would that be about when…. ID: YM: When was her arrest? She was arrested on July 15th. Which would be… uhm, the 15th is over here, and the 5th is that Saturday, just uh, two Saturdays before. Uh, does that sound about right? ID: YM: That sounds, uh, that sounds about right, yeah (affirmative). Okay. So she never talked to you about any problems she was having with the child? Uh, never talked of any problems with the family? ID: No. YM: ID: Uh, what about problems with relationships? She complained that uhm, just about Tony how he had to leave. Like he was only here temporarily. I think he was going to Full Sail. And I don’t remember. And then he had to go back up to New York. And she didn’t know if she should go with him or stay. That’s, that’s to the extent of it. YM: ID: Okay. Did she ever tell you she was moving out, or…. She did uhm, on AOL on AIM. We talked just two weeks before this all uhm, her arrest and before it al went down. She was saying she was looking for apartments to, to move out to with her and uh, and Caylee. YM: Did she say it was just going to be those two, or she was going to move with Tony or…. ID: Just, just those two. She said, I specifically asked if it was Tony. Yes. Uhm, she, is she blonde? Yeah (affirmative). Uh, she’s been to uhm, she was at our anything but clothes party. And I’ve seen her a couple times before with uh, with Troy, but we never, we didn’t, we weren’t friends. We didn’t talk. YM: So Casey didn’t mention anything about moving in with Amy at her parents’ house? ID: I didn’t, I didn’t even know she was at her parents’ house. okay. YM: Oh, ID: YM: I had no idea. When, and during the month of June and July, oh, I guess right around that time that uhm, you guys went, or met at Buffalo Wild Wings, did she make any uh, indication to you that there was anything wrong with her child, or her child was missing? ID: That was, that’s the, I guess the creepy part is because she seemed uh, both times at Buffalo Wild Wings, two weeks before, and the week before that she seemed absolutely fine. YM: Never, never any indication that somebody had taken her child, her child was (inaudible). ID: YM: ID: Nothing at all. Had she ever mentioned to you about this nanny? Uh, on-line she didn’t necessarily say nanny, but uhm, I asked her, because she, I used to always think she used to work at Universal…. And uh, I asked on-line, you now, who watches her uh, her daughter. She’s like, “Oh, just a person I’ve, I’ve known for like the past six years. Somebody who I really trust.” And that was part of the AIM logs that I sent to the previous detective. YM: ID: And how long ago was with conversation that…. This was two weeks; it was after the UFC fight. So it’s still around the two week frame, timeframe before she, her arrest. YM: So early July, okay, she tells you she had someone watch his kid for the past six years. She ever mention a name to you? ID: YM: Never; no. I didn’t bother asking. Okay. And that’s, is that the, is that the only time she ever mentioned that she had somebody watching the child, or do you recall her mentioning before? ID: YM: ID: It’s YM: I don’t recall her mentioning before. Alright. You mentioned some…. possible. You mentioned something about her work. As far as you knew she worked at Universal Studios? ID: YM: I thought she worked at Universal this whole time. Okay. Would uhm, did, would she ever bring stuff to you from Universal, or invite you to, to a special, did, did she ever get you into Universal kind of like to show that she worked there, or did she…. But at the same time she said they still you know, works as a event coordinator. I know she worked at Fusion I think one night a week…. YM: Uh-hum ID: (affirmative). ….or something. So, I just never asked. She invited me to Fusion constantly though. I just never got a chance to go. YM: ID: YM: ID: Did she, did you ever know anything about her working at Sports Authority? That was uh, we, that was when I first met her. Uh-hum (affirmative). Uhm, that was in ’07. I’d, uh, I know she, I think she worked at the Sports Authority in like warehouse or something. I know she went back and forth at the store. But I thought that was true. YM: ID: YM: ID: Okay. You say you though that was true? It’s not? Yeah (affirmative), I thought, I thought I did. Up until now? I, I guess. YM: Okay. ID: YM: That’s not true either? Well uh, if I were to tell you that she never worked at the Sports Authority before, uh, would that be a surprise to you right now? ID: Yes. Because in ’07 we were uhm, supposed to go to a concert together and uh, she told me she had to work, work a, a night a late night at the warehouse doing inventory, so she didn’t go. (Laughs.) YM: Do you know uh, Lauren Cobb? ID: Uhm, I know both of them. Lauren Gibbs, Matt Gibbs’ sister. YM: Okay. ID: Do YM: you… Well if you ask them about Sports Authority they’ll, they’ll tell you what happened with that I suppose, if you’re friends with them. Uhm, so Sports Authority, she told you early ’07 that’s where she was working. Canceled the concert because she said she had to work. Did uhm, after she was arrested, I believe and the times that she came out and she was back at the house, did you talk to her, text her or anything like that? Did she reach out to you at all? ID: YM: Not at all. She ever try to uh, just say hey, you know, I want to explain what’s going on. What about the morning, or the, that day that just before she was arrested? Do you remember getting text messages from her? ID: YM: ID: It was uh…. Or calls from her. No. I remember she called Sean that, in the middle of the night. That morning, uhm, one of my good friends, Leila, she uh, she went onto My Space. She was just browsing My Space. She saw that everything’s changed. Caylee’s missing. So I uh, I, I immediately called uh, Mallory Parker. YM: Uh-hum ID: (affirmative). That’s Lee’s uhm, girlfriend. And then uh, I asked what’s going on. She was telling me about you know, Caylee’s missing. So Lee calls me an hour later. But I, I didn’t hear from Casey at all. YM: Uh-hum ID: YM: ID: YM: (affirmative). It was uh, Mallory and Lee that I found out through. Now, so Casey never directly called you that day or the… No. …the next morning? ID: No. YM: Did anyone call you from her phone do you remember? ID: No. YM: Alright. And she ever, so she’s never talked to you about this uhm, I guess since the day she was arrested? She’s never reached out to you or…. ID: YM: No contact at all. What about with Lee or with Mallory, or any of the family members? Have, have they relayed any messages from her to you, or have they talked to you about what’s going on? ID: Uhm, I think I spoke to, I did speak to Lee maybe a month later. He was on her uh, uh, AIM name. So I thought it was her. So I, you know, I said hi. But it was uh, it was Lee just going through messages I guess. YM: Uh-hum ID: (affirmative). That was, I think that was the only time. I talk to Mallory often. Uhm, her parents, no I, I know everybody went to the, the Sunday vigils and the search parties. I just, I never went to all that stuff. YM: Uh-hum (affirmative). 11 Donovan, Iassen/Case #08-74777/GG 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 ID: But uhm, yeah (affirmative), I took, I mean I took myself off her Facebook and My Space two days after it happened because I kept getting harassed by like reporters and stuff. So, I, I guess I know, I fell off the radar…. YM: ID: YM: I’m not surprised. …with, with them. Yeah (affirmative). You’re not the only one. The uhm, from the time that you knew her in January of ’07 to I guess the last time you saw her, did you ever see or notice a change of attitude with her? ID: Never change of attitude, but there was times where she would uhm, just all of a sudden drop uhm, you know, drop out of the blue and, and stop hanging out with us. And this is, I guess we’d find out like because she’s dating somebody she, I guess she wouldn’t bring them around, or she didn’t want to hang out with us. I, because those are, I mean Annie and j…Sean knows her. They’re friends since high school. They’re really good friends, so. But uh, attitude-wise for, no. YM: So nothing changed in as far as you know she’d get upset well easier, or she was uh, you now, up…upset, angry easier. She would cry easier. You know, show emotions. Kind of you know, be bi-polar. Anything like that? ID: YM: ID: YM: No. I’ve only seen her cry once over a guy, so. It wasn’t Jesse was it? No. It was Brandon. Okay. Speaking of Brandon, were you at uh, at the party where she went in accusing him of uh, having a miscarriage? ID: Yes. YM: Which party was this? Was this the…. ID: They…. YM: ID: …no clothes party? …I think it was anything but clothes party, yeah (affirmative). Uhm, what, what he told me is that uhm, she’s like, “I wish we talked more since the miscarriage”, this and that. But he didn’t believe that. And uhm, I guess he told me that she expressed that she still cared about him after such a long time. That was the extent of it. I didn’t…. YM: But there wasn’t an argument. It wasn’t more uh, talk. It was kind of like, you know have…. ID: See, I don’t know about the argument. It was outside. I was, I was inside. But I did see her crying though. YM: Alright. Do, was that, do you know how, how, how close are you to Brandon Snow? Are you guys, do you speak to him? ID: We joined the Army together. so…. YM: Okay, ID: YM: ID: YM: He peer pressured me into it, so. Ain’t nothing wrong with that. So…. We’re close; yeah (affirmative). …did, did Brandon, is that the first time Brandon knew about a miscarriage, or did he talk to you about it later, or what, what’s the deal with that? ID: YM: (Sighs.) Uhm, he went back to the Army and he said that uh, yeah (affirmative), she said she had a miscarriage. That she, that she was pregnant but then she had a miscarriage. But he didn’t believe it. Uhm, not taking anything away from Casey, but a lot of people in the military, I mean this is story like girls like try to hold onto these guys by making that up. And I’ve seen it time and time again. So, I didn’t, nothing new. And being that I guess Casey now is a pathological liar, it’s, I, I trust Brandon. I believe him. YM: Okay. ID: So. YM: Do you know uhm, based on what you know about Casey, and I guess the whole story. You, you’ve watched this unfold for the past several months. What do you think may have happened? ID: I, I think she, I think she killed her kid. I don’t think anybody else was involved. Uhm, but I guess after the first couple weeks I, I always knew. I mean my friends were at the other end of the spectrum. YM: Uh-hum ID: (affirmative). But uhm, I mean I’m being realistic. I’m not being cynical. I’m just, I can’t… you… YM: Do ID: …I mean all the evidence, well I just, that’s what I went with. YM: Okay. ID: YM: It all made sense. You say you believe that she did it alone. Do you have any, any uhm, any personal knowledge, or has anyone ever, has anyone come by and told you in confidence hey, I know what happened and, and expressed what actually happened? 14 Donovan, Iassen/Case #08-74777/GG 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 ID: No. YM: Okay, so nobody uh, as far as you know of there’s nobody that she’s opened up to that maybe shared that information with you? ID: Yeah. YM: ID: Do you have any idea where she would have put Caylee? (Sighs.) No. Uh, I guess your good as, your guess is as good as mine. Uh, I always thought, because my house is just a mile from the landfill. And if she goes, she used to go to my house all the time. So I ever, and if it ever crossed her mind that would be a place that you know, she could go. YM: To your house…. ID: But…. YM: ID: …or at the landfill? The landfill. The main one. (affirmative). Right there on Young Pine? YM: Uh-hum ID: Yeah YM: (affirmative), the Young Pine landfill. Uhm…who would you say is, is, is the person closest to Casey? ID: Annie. YM: Do you know if she’s opened up to Annie at all or tried to, or has Annie tried to, to get her to talk at all? Because we know that her mom’s tried and her dad’s tried. But we know that the relationship there was just, it, it, it wasn’t solid between her mom and her. ID: I know that Annie has talked to her and has uhm, physically seen her. She went to the house. YM: ID: After she was out? Uh, she got arrested so many times I, I just can’t remember. I get confused. But I know that she, she has been to the house. She had talked to her. But uhm, I guess I asked Annie, Annie believes Casey’s uhm, Casey’s story, so. YM: Hmm. ID: YM: But I don’t think she opened up to her. Uh, looking back, have you know what, there are a lot of people in this case who up until the time she was arrested believed a lot of things that she said and never really thought and that, that they would catch her in little white lies, but never thought it was it was this big. You know, lying about being at work, or, or lying about jobs, or lying about being pregnant and stuff like that. Looking back, do you recall now any instances where Casey may have, you know, like you mentioned, Sports Authority. You said she works at Sports Authority and that’s the reason she didn’t go to the concert. Do you remember anything else like that that kind of stands out in the past year and a half that you knew her uhm, like and any outright lies that she would have told, or that you kind of caught her on? ID: Like the thing with Casey that uhm, because I’ve met pathological liars before, and the thing with Casey was different like she wouldn’t tell these great stories of some, something amazing that you’d be like wow, this actually happened? She was never like that. Uhm, I guess any lie that she would ever tell would be something small like, oh, I have to work tonight. Something like that. Oh, I can’t go out because I have to, you know I have to work a double. I have to work at the warehouse. Something, something like that. She ever tell you about getting robbed? ID: No. YM: She never said she got robbed at Sports Authority while dropping off a, a deposit or something? ID: Never. YM: Okay. ID: Huh; YM: never. Uhm, chloroform came up in this case and uh, obviously she was doing research on her computer for chloroform. And we got evidence of that that went to the State. What do you know about chloroform? Your personal knowledge, what do you know about chloroform? ID: I mean before the military, I mean in movies uhm, I guess I knew it from movies like any kind of like crime movie… YM: Uh-hum ID: (affirmative). …chloroform was used in uhm, I guess the first time was the Silence of the Lambs, so I, I knew what, what it was. Uhm, I mean I’m sure it’s common knowledge. It seems like to me it’s almost like common knowledge about chloroform. That’s what and people use to you know, knock people out; sedate them. YM: Do you ever remember having a conversation with Casey about chloroform? ID: No. YM: She ever ask you about it? Say hey, what’s this, or hey, have you ever made it, or hey, where can I buy it? YM: Do you know of anyone in the, in the circle of friends that she either used to be with, or that she was with now that maybe used chloroform, or, or had access to it? ID: No. No, I don’t think so. None of my friends, none of my close friends. YM: Okay. ID: YM: I can’t speak for her, uhm, Ricardo’s group, or Tony’s group, or…. Right. But as far as your group of friends that’s not something that was kind of common? ID: Yes. YM: ID: YM: It wasn’t anything that you guys ever were exposed to? No, absolutely not. Did uhm, did you ever use her laptop or have occasion to use her laptop? ID: No. YM: ID: YM: What about her uh, home computer? No. I’ve only been to her house once for the, for the birthday party. Okay. Fair enough. Uhm, is there anything about this case that I haven’t asked you about, or anything about Casey that I haven’t asked you about that you feel is important that you want to share with me? ID: Huh-huh (negative), no. I mean I guess if I think of something later on I’ll contact you, but… YM: Okay. ID: YM: …right now, no. Alright. Would you raise your right hand for me?
