We’re using the newspaper to create its own Feel Good, Feed Back Loop. Howard’s Hoof In Mouth Disease Which brings me to the kinda strange question Dane [The Answer Man] and I were asked at the Farmers Market, last Saturday. Dane and I were having our usual Croissant and Coffee Club meeting. Membership in the “3 C’s” is FREE. All you have to do is show up with a croissant [or any other pastry] and some coffee or tea – conveniently available at the Farmers Market Café. There were 7 people present at this casual meeting. Most of them were newbies. We were discussing how pleasant the day was and how the music creates a nice atmosphere under the shade trees. One of the newbies, Howard, a local roofer, asked “Why do you do the paper? It doesn’t make any money, and it seems like it’s a hobby.” Dane – in his usual ‘Tell It Like It Is’ technique – took first crack at this ‘Get A Life’ suggestion. “The paper IS successful. If it wasn’t – how could it have grown so fast to 28 pages, with color? How could it expand with a sister paper: the Altamonte Springs News?” “But you miss the point”, Dane said. “Everyone connected with the paper has a successful career or business not connected to the paper. We all agreed on creating the concept of a Feel Good Newspaper, that takes an active part in creating the community feeling. There’s been an incredible acceptance by the residents. People like reading a Feel Good newspaper. There’s more to this type of newspaper than just the financial success. “

Growing Pains and Gains
“If there’s No Pain there’s No Gain” – I don’t know if I really believe that phrase applies to newspapers. The last ‘gain’ in pages - from 24 to 28 - was all satisfaction and pleasure! No pain, all gain! Part of the ‘Feel Good’ concept, is to provide information Not Available Elsewhere. When we increase the useful information, we increase the Good Feeling from reading our paper. Our goal has always been to expand some of the sections and add on several others. Translation: we need more pages. The jump to 28 pages gave us the room we need to start accomplishing those goals. Starting with this issue, we’ll be expanding the Answer Man, and Medical News Digest. We’ve already started adding columns, like ‘Physical Therapy’ – to be followed by Career and Business related sections. The popular ‘One Day Trips’ will be joined by a section on ‘Unique Travel Destinations’. And we’ll be reporting on the community projects we’ve started and will be starting. Projects that enhance our lifestyle, - like The Farmers Market, The Emergency Services Van, The Veterans Projects, and Seminars like the very successful Pet Seminar, and the Mind/Body series.

rate is going up, and I’m going to end up sharing almost half of what I’m earning with Uncle Sam. I work hard for my money, and I really resent paying that much in taxes. Especially when there’s so much government waste. I read in USA Today, that the Pentagon is paying $171.50 for hammers and NASA paid $600 per toilet seat. Any suggestions as to how I can legally pay less taxes? A. I’m not an accountant, but I am the Answer Man. Here’s my suggestion. Q. I do have a problem, but I just want a short concise answer. Life is too short to waste it on long explanations or advice. I don’t want to hear how it’s my fault or that I lack purpose or direction. Just point me in the right direction. My problem is I know there’s more to life than what I’m doing. And I know I’m not as happy as I can or should be. Can you really give me some quickie advice that I can use, to immediately tap whatever undiscovered talents I have? A. You really have some serious ‘Gimmee it now” issues to deal with. You’re the classic case of someone who wants to do more than they’re doing, but, you’re looking for the quick fix, that elusive Magic Bullet that can instantly kill all their demons. If I have to stay in the limits you’ve set for me, then all I can suggest is the Comparison Technique. To do anything in life, you first need to discover your values. Figure out what’s really important to you. Then just make a quick list of on what, and where do you spend most of your time. With your level of impatience, my guess is you’re a dedicated career couch potato. So, the list shouldn’t take you too long. Now, just compare your values – the things that are important to you, - to the what and where you’re spending all your time. They don’t match, - do they? That’s what’s separating you from that feeling of fulfillment. You’re distant or disconnected from what your life should or can be. Now, just read the following sentence fast and you’ll have the ‘quickie advice’ your looking for: The-momentI-decide-to-rebalance-my-life-by-doingmore-of-what’s-important-that’s-whenI-will-get-more-out-of-life. Was that quickie enough?? Q. It’s just 3 months before the end of the year. I’m having the best year in sales that I’ve ever had. But, with the commmissions and bonuses, my tax Let’s say you owe $15,000 in taxes. Just go to Home Depot and buy 15 or 20 very cheap toilet seats. And while you’re there, pick up at least 2 dozen hammers. And don’t forget 3 or 4 boxes of 1.5” Phillips head screws – HUD pays $22 for each screw. Now, just send them all to IRS – along with your tax return. Include instructions to apply the overpayment to the “Presidential Election Fund”. That should easily take care of your taxes and save you at least ¾ of what you owe. Of course, you can’t do this but, the thought of doing it does make you smile. And anytime you can smile while paying taxes, it does make it less painful. We’ve all heard of these outrageous squanderings of our tax money. But, you’re better off focusing on the concept that there are people in this country who are not even making half of what you’re paying in taxes. You truly are blessed with the opportunity and talent to make this kind of money.
If you can’t arrange for your employer to delay the payment into next year, then make sure you find a good tax accountant that can save at least 1/3 of what you’re planning on paying. Send your questions to: AnswerMan@rockspringsnews.net We do NOT use your name.

Powerhouse Gym Family Friendly Fitness Center
By Susan Figaro
Powerhouse Gym opened in June 1999 with the goal to promote family fitness in a clean and friendly environment. Walking in the door, you are greeted by friendly staff, surrounded with all kinds of equipment, from treadmills to bicycles to weight machines, and a children’s play center. Powerhouse Gym is a fitness facility where parents and their children can spend quality time together! Children can use the gym with parents on site from the ages of 13 -15. Beginning at 16 years of age, there is no need for supervision. In addition, childcare for the young ones is FREE! While I was visiting, a member walked over to talk to the manager. He was excitedly explaining that he had lost almost 40 pounds since he started working out. He attributed a large part of his weight loss to Powerhouse Gym. His whole family had joined, including his two teenagers. He said it’s really great to be able to spend quality

Q. Can you tell me more about diabetes? What are the warning signs of diabetes? Linda G., Apopka A. Diabetes is a disease in which the body fails to produce or effectively use insulin. Insulin is necessary to provide fuel to the body and people with diabetes either produce little or no insulin, or do not respond to the insulin their cells are producing. Recognized as one of the leading causes of death and disability, diabetes affects almost every part of the body and is responsible for numerous complications including blindness, heart and blood vessel disease, strokes, kidney failure, amputations and nerve damage. If left undetected, diabetes can cause serious medical complications. To protect your health, pay attention to the warning signs that may indicate diabetes. The symptoms of Type 1 diabetes include:
• • • • • • • • •
Increased thirst or hunger Frequent urination Unexplained weight loss Extreme fatigue (weak, tired feeling) Tingling or numbness in the hands or feet Blurred vision Dry mouth, labored, abnormal breathing Headaches Loss of consciousness (rare)
The symptoms of Type 2 diabetes include:

Stand up Straight & Reduce Shoulder Pain!
Stand up straight! Keep your shoulders back! We all know that we feel good and look better when we have good posture. But, did you know that good posture can significantly reduce shoulder pain? It’s true.
Most shoulder pain is caused by bursitis, rotator cuff tendonitis or rotator cuff tears. In all of these conditions, the bursa and tendons frequently become compressed between the two bones of the shoulder joint. Such compression is greatly increased when the shoulders are forward in a slumped posture. Then, arm motion can be painful and limited as the rotator cuff attempts to control the arm while in a compromised position. Do you want to see for yourself? Try standing with a slouched posture and raise your arms out to the side and overhead. Next, squeeze your shoulder blades together and raise your arms again. Studies have shown repeatedly that people have more range of motion of their shoulders when they have good posture, due to reduced joint compression. Conversely, poor posture with activity can lead to inflammation, pain and even partial tears of the tendons. A correction of posture can restore the normal tension on the tendons and space in the joint and most importantly, reduce your pain. Do scapular retractions throughout the day by simply squeezing your shoulder blades together. In order to maintain posture, use exercise cues and do a set of 10 shoulder blade squeezes every commercial during television, at every stoplight during driving and with every chapter while reading. Correct posture is most important during any arm activity. In ten years of clinical experience, I have treated many shoulders and have always seen the best success in those with good or corrected posture. It’s simple, but it’s very helpful!

Teachers who are practicing doctors themselves, - at world famous hospitals. Imagine the breadth and depth of the scientific and clinical disciplines. Our first subject is the first in a series on the differences between Strength and Power Training, for adults. It’s all based on a combination of the reports from prestigious medical schools and our review of the latest research findings. What is Strength Training? What is Power Training? Can a combination of these activities change your body for the better? Let’s get the basics down. Strength Training builds muscle by using resistance. You use an opposing force that muscles strain against. That’s why it’s also called Resistance Training, or Weight Training. The resistance can be from free weights, your body weight, or specialized machines. According to the Harvard report on Strength and Power Training, “No matter what (continued on page 12)

Studying Light
By Barbara Middleton
Let there be light! Without light there can be no photograph. The important thing to study about light is how quickly it changes. Natural light is constantly changing. Dawn comes and goes in brief moments. Change your position and the light changes. Five to ten feet in any direction changes the light and your photograph. In the morning the light is warm, in the evening cool, light changes as the seasons change.
Photo by Ross McClintock, taken in Virginia City, Nevada, handheld with an Olympus C2000 on automatic shutter. Overcast day provided even lighting. Notice how Ross anchored the lower left with the Gazebo. Beautiful vista. If you are serious about photography, start studying light. Actually, the study of light is a quite pleasant and calming pastime as well as being indispensable to a photographer. The best natural light is early morning and late in the day. The rising and setting sun has so much soft light and warmth that no filter can possibly match it. There is a small window of opportunity for shooting here, but oh so worth it. Sunny midday lighting is too bright for good landscape, architecture or portrait photos. If you must shoot during midday try using fill-in flash to offset harsh shadows that are present. Best shooting is on an overcast day. The light is softer and kinder and doesn’t change as quickly. I’ll go into light more in my next article. The two pictures were sent in by readers. They are examples of good composition.
Photo by Rudolph Runge taken in Berchtesgarden, Germany. Rudi is a retired ‘Leica Master’. Shot was taken with a Leica film camera. Notice the tonal range. Lower left is anchored by the church and the trees in the foreground give the photo dimension.
Last month I asked for some photos to critique and publish. I want to thank you all for emailing me your photo. The two photos are the ones I selected to print because I think you will enjoy them. Notice the composition. E-mail your questions and photos to: barbara@rockspringsnews.net

The other benefits include making any activity easier with stronger muscles. More Than Plants, Vegetables and Food. The Farmers Market started out as any other market. Almost instantly, it became a testing ground for local business startups. There was the vendor with the Crepes, who went on to open a store front. Then the carved fruit “Fruit Florals” tested their products and now are in their permanent location in Hunt Club. Currently the barbecue vendor is testing his unique recipes – and building a following while he looks for a local location.

The Amazing & Enchanting Owl
By Carol McCorkle Avian Reconditioning Center
Owls have fascinated mankind for many centuries. Some people imagine owls to be bearers of bad news while most are captivated by their amazing abilities to survive and thrive in almost total darkness, as most owls are nocturnal. There are two different families of owls Tytonidae and Strigidae. The barn owls and bay owls belong to the family Tytonidae and the remaining 124 species of owls belong in the Strigidae family. Here in Central Florida we have 5 native species of owls that are permanent residents: the Barn Owl, Eastern Screech Owl, Great Horned Owl, Barred Owl and Burrowing Owl. Owls are very popular with people, probably because of their humanistic like traits such as eyes facing forward and the vertical posture. These and several other unique adaptations are what help them to function so efficiently in darkness. Remarkable hearing, excellent vision and stealthy silent flight combine to create an incredible nocturnal predator. Owls can see well in low light because their eyes are large and tube-shaped. They have specialized cells in their eyes called rods that help them to see perfectly in darkness, but only in black and white. Hearing can be even more important to an owl than sight, large ear openings that are assymetrical allow for even the slightest sound to be detected. The flat face with the facial disk helps owls to collect and carry sound waves to the ears, allowing the owl to detect where their prey is located, to swoop down on quiet wings to silently grab their prey. Unique feathers have soft serrated edges that muffle the owl’s flight and allow for a surprise attack. To learn more about owls and other birds of prey come visit The Avian Reconditioning Center at 323 W. Lester Rd in Apopka on Saturdays from 10 AM to 4 PM. Please visit our web page at www.arc4raptors.org for more information and a map, or call 407 461-1056 to book a program.

Ask The Vet
Annie Greer, Certified Veterinary Chiropractor Q. Is there a vaccine to prevent my dog against poisonous snakebites?
October 2006
Rock Springs News
1
A. The answer is yes, and no. Currently there is a vaccine developed that will give very good immunity against Western Diamond Rattlesnakes, which is great if you live or travel with your dog to those parts of the country. The most common variety of rattlesnake in this area is the Eastern Diamond Rattlesnake and the vaccine will offer a partial protection. My viewpoint on this is that some is better then none. We live on a farm and have seen rattlesnakes in the past, so I consider it a good option for our personal pets. It is important to note that the vaccine is not effective against Water Moccasin (Cottonmouth) With over 300,000-recorded pet bites from venomous snakes, research is ongoing to find immunization against these other species. The cost of the vaccine is very reasonable and is no more difficult then administering a regular vaccine with booster recommendations for the first dosing. If you e-mail me I can give you further details. What if your pet is bitten? You should try and safely identify the species and go immediately to a veterinarian. Time is of the essence. Do not stop. Do not pass go, but do collect $200 as anti-venim can run as high as a thousand dollars depending on the size of the pet. The body can quickly become overwhelmed with of toxins that effect the nervous and /or the circulatory system. Anti-venim, fluids, antibiotics and hospitalization will probably be necessary depending on the severity or location of the bite. Note. Even non-venomous snakebites can cause deep infection and may require medication. Please don’t bring us a live rattlesnake so we can verify your identification. We will take your word for it! FOR YOUR EYES ONLY
By Julie Pinckney Board Certified Optician and Contact Lens Fitter Owner of Optical Eyeland
For twenty years, Optical Eyeland has been building Optical Eyeland the old fashioned way - one relationship at a time. The company was opened in 1986 when Jim Pinckney, husband and father of three made a decision that would ultimately affect Apopka and his family. “I moved my family to Florida to begin an early retirement, but the optical business was in my blood.” Jim had been running 4 optical stores in upstate New York since the early 1970’s and was looking for a slower pace in life. After a few months of relaxation, Jim decided to find an optical store where he could work part time. Little did he realize that Optical Eyeland would be a store he would purchase and later sell to his children Julie and Brian Pinckney. Optical Eyeland has been serving the Apopka community for 20 years. Although Jim never imagined that his children would be working with him, he is delighted to have them taking over the retail store he established long ago. Julie Pinckney joined her father in February 2001. Although she had a business management degree from Florida State, she felt it was important to get an Opticianry degree from Hillsborough Community College. She was able to achieve this while working and managing Optical Eyeland. Since joining her father, she has taken an active role in the Apopka Community. She serves on many boards as well as being active with the Apopka Rotary

The time to think about life insurance is before you need it. You may ask yourself, how much life insurance do I need? What is the difference in Term and Permanent life insurance? When should I buy it? There are several things to look at when determining how much insurance you need. There are many things to consider: Your current income. Are you the only income provider in the house? How much debt do you have? How many children do you have and how old are they? You need to consider your savings, the equity in your home, how much you have saved in retirement plans as well as other savings. Your age is important. Will you be retiring soon? All of these things will help paint a picture of your financial needs. Once you and your insurance agent have determined how much insurance you need, its time to decide the kind of insurance you need. The two main types of life insurance are Term insurance and Permanent insurance. Term Insurance is purchased for a specified number of years. For example,

Niagara Falls is the most popular destination for honeymooners. But, did you know what is the most popular place for ‘popping the question’?? I don’t know the answer – but I do know one of the strangest places to propose. And I’m sure you’ll agree. It’s the dentist’s office. Of course, if you want to really surprise your girl friend, just tell her you’re having a tooth out or some other procedure. Then when she comes there to drive you home, you pop the question. No one would suspect that’s the real reason.

Security at Preschools
Continuing on with security when choosing a preschool for your children…
By Karen Miller, Owner of Things to Grow On Is there a front lobby with an internal door that separates the children from the lobby? This way the children can only enter the lobby when an adult has opened the door? This type of security creates a “common” area where parents can safely navigate their children in and out. Is the outgoing knob of the internal door childproof? This eliminates children running out the door without a parent. Is the parking lot attached directly to the entrance of the preschool and marked for safe drop off and pick up? If you have to park in a public parking lot and walk in front of traffic with your children you are risking their safety and yours. Is the playground set back from any public walkways or streets? It is so important that the area in which your child plays is as inaccessible as possible to any persons passing by, whether walking or driving. * Is the playground area fenced off? * Do the children play with same age groups? * Is there a tracking system set up for sign-in, sign-out? Only those registered with the school should be permitted to pick up your child unless otherwise noted in writing by parent. Are I.D.s’ checked of those coming to pick up your child at least until known well by the management and staff? Do the teachers know you and your child by name and do they acknowledge the child’s entrance and exit of the classroom? It’s been several months since our first article on Water Filters. Many of the questions we receive were answered in this first article. Also, our circulation has increased by over 5 thousand since this article appeared. That’s why we’re repeating it here.
Water Filters - Part One
by Dan Cetrone This is the First of Three Articles on Water Filters. This First Article will define the different types of filters and identify some of the issues and reasons for having a water filter.
Every department store, Lowes or Home Depot has a section that sells water filters. We’ve all seen the different sizes. We’ve also received advertisements in the mail from the different brands. But, how many of us really know the differences between water filters? And if we knew the differences, how do we figure out Which Type Of Filter Is Best? It is not difficult to figure out what filter to buy. You need four different types of information. 1) The level of filtration you need. This could be as simple as just wanting to remove taste and odor. 2) The size of the system you require. Are you just interested in filtering the water at the kitchen sink? Or do you want the whole house system? 3) What type of system do you prefer? You’ve heard of the different systems. They range from a basic activated charcoal filter to reverse-osmosis. 4) Which of the different brands does the best job of exactly what you’re looking for? Every brand and type is rated and certified. This information tells you exactly what each filter can do. Once you’ve figured out those 4 questions, you can compare the costs for each system. Costs range from the purchase price, to the cost of filters and supplies. There are charts that show you how much you’re paying for each gallon of water. Let’s go back to the first question. Before you can decide which type of filter is best, you need to know what impurities are in the water. Like most cities, Apopka provides you an analysis of the levels of impurities in your drinking water. These levels are governed by federal standards. Even though Apopka meets and even exceeds the strict guidelines, you may want to filter out tastes or odors, that you think are in the water. Or you may have some other reasons, like your health preferences and requirements. If you just want drinking and cooking water, a kitchen sink filter will satisfy your needs. Or maybe you’re interested in filtering your shower water. There are several valid reasons for doing so. Whether it’s the kitchen sink, the shower or the whole house, you’ll still need to know WHAT you’re trying to filter.

If you have ever watched the Kevin Beacon movie “Breaking Away”, you will ave a good idea of how teams will be competing in this race. This keeps the pace of the race very fast and very fun. The EMBARQABC+ is a very special event sponsored by the Rotary Club of Apopka in honor of more than 100 years of service by its members. Rotary Clubs and districts across the globe are participate in an array of activities and service projects to commemorate the 100 years plus anniversary of Rotary International (1906-2006). Brian also enjoys staying active by being President of the Professional Opticians of Florida Central Florida Chapter, an active member of the chamber of commerce and he teaches at his church as well as mentoring children at the Apopka Family Learning Center.
Through their community involvement, the Pinckney’s understand the importance of giving their patients quality eye care. Julie, Brian and staff strive to offer their patients the best in optical products that the industry offers. This is only done through continuous education through optical seminars.
