ST. PETER’S ANGLICAN CEM., S. MOUNTAIN, MOUNTAIN TWP., DUNDAS CO., ONT.
Concession I, Lot 13, Mountain Township, Dundas County, Ontario Canada. County Road 3,
East of the Village of South Mountain along side the South Nation River.
This grave site underwent a major renovation funded by the Municipality and the rural
incentive works program to preserve the stones in October 1977. The tombstones were placed in
a semi-circle foundation of cement and the grounds were landscaped and cleaned up.
The Cemetery was transcribed August 8th, 1979. April 16th, 2005 it was re-copied by Lynne
and Mahlon Cook. The fence is gone, and the ground is fairly level
Earliest tombstone burial date: 1848, a child and a 84 year old man. The latest tombstone
burial date: 1942.
Starting at the left or east side of the semi-circle and proceeding around to the west side. If
at the end of a date there is (N) means on the north side of the stone, etc.

ENGLISH CEMETERY
At Baldwin’s (formerly Boyd’s) Bridge, crossing the Nation River, about two miles east of the
Village of South Mountain, Mountain Township, Dundas County, Ontario.
“In 1837 a large stone church (St. Peter’s Anglican) was built about two miles east
of South Mountain. This church was surrounded by a burying ground, while hard
by was the parsonage, with 25 acres of land attached. The church site was a donation
from the John Baldwin, Sr.
During Mackenzie’s (minister) time the old church had become greatly delapidated
And was taken down”

NOTES ON WILLIAM JOHN RIDLEY – STP 2
William John Ridley was born in London, England, in 1818. When about 21 years of age he came to
Canada, and subsequently settled in Mountain township, Dundas county. From that time until his death in

1896. Mr. Ridley took a very active part in educational matters and was deeply interested in all issues
pertaining to the welfare of this county. He taught school for 20 years; was superintendent of schools for
some time, and for 42 years was clerk of the court for the township of Mountain. In religion he was a
member of the Church of England, and in politics a Conservative. [Story of Dundas by J. Smyth
