1st Periodic Reporting exercise
New instrument indroduced by the World Heritage Committee; the first 6 years cycle took place from 1999 to 2005. Europe was the last region; it was finished at the end of 2005. Next cycle should start in 2008, after a reflection year. 1xt cycle concerned all the sites inscribed before 1999 It does not replace the reactive monitoring!

Recommendations and Action Plan
An analysis of the reporting for Europe was prepared in 2006 by the World Heritage Center assisted by consultants from IUCN and ICOMOS Recommendations were adressed to State Parties, WH Committe, WH Center, advisory bodies and; specific recommendations for the sub-regions.

Preliminary remarks: The report concerns the "old sites" (inscribed before 1999) only; Due to the "unbalanced" list, answers regarding natural and mixed sites are often not statistically significant; Many site questionnaires were filled or "filtered" by the State parties Recommendations were drafted for each subregion (Western, Nordic, Medit., C+SE, E); however very few recommendation are specific to sub-regions.

Continue improving the implementation of the World Heritage Convention within the framework of the Global Strategy using Periodic Reporting as an efficient tool on all levels; Spread awareness of World Heritage values among all levels of society and institutions involved in the conservation of sites of the benefit of World Heritage.
