Topic Cooperative Learning
Goal: Understand the value and implementation of
Prerequisite: Read pp. 274-284 of Chapter 9.
Objectives SWBAT: List and describe the 4 essential elements of
cooperative learning. Distinguish between a group
activity and cooperative learning
Describe at least 1 simple and 1 complex cooperative
Formulate heterogeneous learning teams
Incorporate 1 or more cooperative learning
techniques in a lesson or unit plan
Materials Graphic worksheets and handouts for individual and
group activities. Computer presentation and projector
if available. Name tags, disks for home use.
Opening DO NOW: List pros and cons of group learning
experiences you have participated in.
Attendance and individual hand-outs.
[Prof. Monaco usurps the class’s attention.]
Display Aronson quote on projector.
Procedure 1 .Beginning lecture including simple CL techniques.

Share on Main Focus of CL)
2. Assemble students into Expert Groups and work on
assigned tasks. (Jigsaw)
3. Students report to Base Groups (by subject) to
complete assigned tasks.
Summary Reconvene attention to Facilitators to explain disk
Base Groups reports and discuss key questions:
How would you describe the way this course is being
taught? What kind of cooperative learning experience
is going on here? How is it working?
Can you see yourself incorporating CL experiences in
your own classroom?
