4 ways to recession-proof your lifestyle Whether the US is really heading for a financial slump is debatable – it really depends on who you ask. Certain industries have taken a hit, but that doesn’t mean that industries that have been out of the limelight aren’t seeing measurable growth. If you’re worried about your financial or employment situation faltering, the time to take action is now. There are some sure-fire ways to lessen the impact of an economic downturn. 1. Plan ahead. Reevaluate your priorities for your family and your future. If you end up struggling for cash, what will be the first thing you cut out of your life? What changes could you make, and live with, today to save some cash down the road? 2. Consider a career shift. Changing industries or taking on freelance or consulting work can add money to your pocket – as well as peace of mind. Many high tech workers laid off in 2001 found new opportunities in the government or nonprofit sector – still doing the jobs they loved, but outside of the Silicon Valley mentality. If you’re not sure about a career switch just yet, you can always add new knowledge and skills to your resume by taking classes online. 3. Remember that a financial slump is temporary. Yes, a recession can hurt us all financially. But things pick up, and even while one economic area suffers, another one rises out of the ashes. 4. Evaluate your finances as they stand right now. Are you using credit to make purchases that you usually pay out of pocket for? If so, then stop. You’re heading for financial trouble when you find yourself using credit for groceries or to make payments. Shop for a lower-cost credit line and focus on paying down your debt. If the future is already looking bleak, sit down with your partner or family and talk about budgeting.
