                                          Unit Plan Assignment
                                             Due March 16th

Description of the Assignment:
A major component of teaching is the analysis, design and modification of curriculum. For this
assignment you will be designing a unit of instruction, drawing on what you have learned throughout
the year about the teaching and learning of mathematics. Although you may design a unit from scratch,
we recommend that you choose materials that your school already uses or other published materials,
and adapt them to meet the particular needs of your students and your own teaching goals.

You will be sharing components of your unit plans with us and with your classmates; you should
consider your audience to be other math teachers. We hope that you will teach these units in your
placement classroom during the Spring quarter, so try to choose material that you are likely to be
teaching between late March and early May. Because it is difficult to plan for "students" in the abstract,
we ask that you plan this unit for a specific class that you are currently teaching.

Description of a Unit
Units are a way of organizing instruction into coherent "chunks" that make explicit connections across
individual lessons. The unit plan provides a guide for teachers as they do their daily lesson planning and
for students as they try to see the connections among class activities and assignments. Effective units can
provide scaffolding for student learning by building upon students' growing knowledge, skills, and
understanding. By starting with learning goals in mind, teachers can better prepare students to meet
those goals.

Units typically comprise between two and four weeks of lessons. They can be organized around specific
mathematical concepts (e.g., similarity; symmetry); practices (e.g., modeling; justification); objects (e.g.,
conics; transformations); or ideas or applications that integrate concepts across content areas (e.g.,
packaging boxes; patterns & tessellations). Although some units are primarily skill-based, we ask you to
build a unit that integrates a balance of conceptual development and practice with skills. Whatever the
focus of your unit, we expect you to identify the "big ideas" students will be able to investigate as they
work through it.

Unit Assignment
We will assess the completeness of your unit using a checklist of the required components outlined in
this assignment sheet. We will assess its quality using an adaptation of the STEP Unit Plan Rubric which
we will distribute in class. The components of the unit plan will be described in more detail in separate
assignment sheets.

Different sections of the Unit Plan Assignment will be due throughout the quarter to provide additional
structure to the assignment and to give you the opportunity to ask questions and receive feedback from
your peers and from us. In addition, feedback on your plan from your cooperating teacher and/or
supervisor, who have the local knowledge of your students and school, will be invaluable.

                                            Unit Components

I. Unit Overview [Due January 23]
   1. Central focus of the unit and prioritized learning goals
   2. Rationale for central focus and learning goals
   3. Links to the California State Mathematics Content Standards
   (http://www.cde.ca.gov/be/st/ss/mthmain.asp)

II. Unit Calendar [Due February 20]
    1. The topic and learning goals for each day
    2. Possible activities or teaching strategies for each day
    3. Due dates for all assignments and critical assessments

   Your unit calendar should demonstrate an understanding of a range of different instructional
   strategies as well as how to sequence instruction.

III. Elaborated Lesson Plan [Lesson Plan due February 26; rationale due March 16]

Lesson Plan(s): You should submit a detailed lesson plan (or two detailed lesson plans) for approximately
90 minutes of instruction - either one block period or two consecutive 45-minute periods. The lessons
you choose should go beyond skill practice to develop students' procedural fluency, and or conceptual
understanding, mathematical reasoning, and productive disposition. Your plan(s) should include
learning goals, participation structures, mathematical tasks, assessments, timings, and materials, and
should demonstrate your understanding a range of instructional strategies. At least one activity in your
lesson plan(s) should be differentiated. You should provide enough detail in your plans for other teachers
to follow exactly what you and your students will be doing in class.

Rationale: Discuss how your selected instructional strategies, materials, and mathematical tasks reflect
your knowledge of your students and will support them in meeting your specific learning goals.
Identify how you have differentiated portions of your lesson to meet the range of needs and interests in
your classroom. Discuss how you will draw out and address anticipated misconceptions and common
errors. Explain how you will assess the effectiveness of the lesson.

IV. Assessment Plan [Culminating assessment(s) due February 6; overall plan due March 16]
    1. A rationale for how - throughout the unit - you will assess student learning as it relates to your
    learning goals.
    2. A pre-assessment and the culminating assessment(s) for your unit.
    3. The specific grading plan for your unit.
    4. A letter to parents introducing the unit, announcing the major assignments, and explaining the
    grading policy you will use.

VI. Adaptation Commentary [Due March 16]
If you are adapting a pre-existing unit, explain why you chose it and discuss and provide a rationale for
significant decisions you made as you adapted it to meet the needs of your particular students.

Include clear references for all the resources and materials, including published materials and websites,
you plan to use with this unit. You should also identify any colleagues, such as your supervisor or STEP
classmates, with whom you consulted in the design of this unit.
