A pancake is a thin flat cake made of batter and fried in a frying pan. A traditional English pancake is very thin and served immediately. Caster sugar (superfine sugar) is sprinkled over the top and a dash of fresh lemon juice to add. The pancake is then rolled. Some people put golden syrup or jam on their pancakes. Shrove means being forgiven for wrong do-ings. This custom grew up because of the legend which dates from over 500years ago in 1445.On Shrove Tuesday one women was still making her pancakes as the church bells rang out. Rather then be late she took her frying pan and pancake with her. Shrove Tuesday sees the start of Ashbourne,Derbyshire of the worlds oldest, largest, longest and maddest football game.
