Ethics of Giving Gifts to Physicians from the Perspective of Pharmaceutical Representatives (PR) and Differences Between Indigenous (IC) and Multinational (MC) Pharmaceutical Companies in South India Stephanie Albin University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine GHEC Conference Background: Pharmaceutical Industry in India Study Objectives • Describe the culture of gift-giving by pharmaceutical companies to physicians. • Explore the differences in attitudes and beliefs of Medical Representatives (MRs) and Sales Managers employed by MultiNational Companies (MNC) and Indian Local Pharmaceutical Companies (LPC). Qualitative Survey • Survey Design – 30 Minute Survey – Structured and Administered by Research Assistant – Goal: Assess the role of MRs in patient care activities, clinical research, and details of gift giving practices. • Recruitment – Methodology: Using a key informant, we recruited a convenience sample of 11 subjects (snowball methodology). Quantitative Survey • Survey Design – 87 Item Multiple Choice Survey – Domains: Ethics and Marketing Practices (Likert Scales) • Recruitment – Methodology: We recruited a convenience sample of 169 from large hospitals in Hyderabad, India.
