					MAIRA KOUTSOUDAKIS I CURRICULUM VITAE

OVERVIEW

Maira Koutsoudakis is an Interior Designer, Principal of LIFE INTE RIORS + ARCHITE CTURE +
CREA TIVE DIRE CTION, and owner of the 400m2 designer showroom and retail haven which is
LIFE emporium and cafe in Nelson Mandela Square, Johannesburg, South Africa and co-owner
of a boutique resort store on North Island, Seychelles.

Maira has been involved in projects as divers e as a private island resort in the Seychelles, urban
renewal projects in Johannesburg’s inner city, luxury residences in the wine-lands of Somerset
West, in the arid plains of Qatar, and luxury lodges in the Okavango Delta, the Chobe, and in the
deserts of Namibia, as well as residential projects in Madagascar, Mozambique, Greece, London
and penthouse office suites in Johannesburg, and the turn -key brand-building of restaurant and
retail concepts in South Africa.

On the Product Design front, LIFE has been represented and retailed at the LIFE store locally
and internationally at amongst others, at the acclaimed Kelly Hoppen and The Conran Shop in
London, Paris, New York, Fukuoka and Tokyo in Japan and various stores in Germany, France
and the S eychelles with original, own-brand South African manufactured products.

Three of Maira’s collections, which have achieved critical and commercial success locally and
internationally, namely the 'Wodaabe' turned wooden vessels 'Trouve' ceramics, and the ‘Pod'
lights have represented South A frica in the prestigious 'Design Made in A frica' exhibition which
has traveled to all the major cities of the Northern and Southern hemispheres over a two year
period, followed by inclusion in the permanent collection of the Saint -Etienne Design Museum in
the South of France. Other acclaimed designs have also been represent ed in the NORTH-
SOUTH exhibition in Paris and Stockholm.

CURRICULUM VITAE

1991 Graduat es from South A frican Hellenic Educational and Technical Institute, Johannesburg

1994 Graduates from Witwatersrand Technik on/ University of Johannesburg Interior Des ign
     Diploma, from the School of Three-Dimensional Design

1995 Completes Degree from University of South A frica, majoring in History of Art
     and English Literature

1996 Achieves postgraduate diploma in ‘Design Direction : Strategic Design and Corporate
     Innovation’ from renowned Domus Academy in Milan, under the tutelage of Memphis
     founder Andrea Branzi and professional practitioners Aldo Cibic, Ettore Sottsas and
     Michele de Lucchi.

1997-1999 Opens her design studio and completes projects in Southern Africa in the fields of
      retail and residential design.

1999 Joins the premier interior design firm of Julius and Company (now known as dsgn ) as
     junior then senior designer for three years working on large-scale civic, corporate and
     hospitality projects such as the Mpumalanga Government offic es and Premier’s suites,
     Sandton Convention Cent re, Total Head Office, Umhlanga Sands Hotel and Cabana Beach
     Resort projects, amongst others.


2000 Maira Koutsoudakis, together with partner John, founded life , a 300m2 style emporium
     and Studio, in Sandton, South A frica, the first of its kind in Africa. Retailing a limited range
      of life and bes poke furniture, local and imported homeware, bodycare, art books, media
      and oddities, life was complemented by a 60-seat er cafe with Salad Bar and Chocolate
      Bar.

2002 The success of the emporium led to a further 80m2 extension in 2002 and the growth of
     the onsite design studio, which currently concentrates on resort, hospitality, retail, luxury
     residential and corporate projects

2003 LIFE completed the acclaimed private island eco-resort project, North Island in the
     Seychelles. Comprised of 11 privat e villas this unique international product was heralded
     globally for its position as a ‘Noah’s Ark’ as well as for LIFE’s creation of a new signature
     style in boutique hospitality, winning awards from amongst others, Tatler ‘Most Innovative
     Resort 2003’ and UK Sunday Times ‘Most Outstanding Style’ and the covet ed Conde
     Nast Traveler ‘ Best of the Best in the World’ and most recently ‘BBC Top Eco resort in
     the world’. Much of Maira’s industrial design work for the island project has led to the
     origination of acclaimed new products such as the ‘Pod’ lights, receiving the ELLE
     Decoration Int ernational ‘Best Lighting Design 2003’ award and acclaim for her ‘Proudly
     South African’ positioning and philos ophy

2004 LIFE is contracted to complete residential projects in Qatar and Cape Town, an Urban
     Spa in Johannesburg, an island project in Inhaca island, Mozambique, new concept
     corporate offices in Sandhurst amongst others.

2004 Maira has been invited to talk at various prestigious Design Conferences namely Decorex
     2004 in Johannesburg and the upcoming Dec orex 2005 in Durban and Cape Town. She
     has also been invited to exhibit at the Design Indaba Expo in Cape Town 2005 in the
     original furniture design category, amongst South Africa’s finest.

2005 LIFE focusses on the ex port of a number of locally-manufactured, own-brand collections
     to cities in Europe. LIFE’s collections are shown in Europe, from January through to
     September 2004, at exhibitions ‘Tendence’ and ‘Ambiente’ in Munich and Frankfurt, and
     ‘Maison et Objet’ in Paris. On the local front, LIFE exhibits at the inaugural ‘Design Indaba
     Expo’ and ‘Rooms on View’ lat er in the year.

2004 LIFE opens the North Island gallery -boutique resort store in the Seychelles as Designers,
     operators and partners.

2004-2006 SAINT E TIENNE DES IGN BIE NNALE ‘MA DE IN AFRICA’ E XHIB ITION
      An international body of Design and Art curators selected three of Maira’s original product
     ranges, namely the ‘Pod lights’, ‘Trouve’ ceramics and ‘Wodaabe’ timber vessels to
     represent South African design in an international exhibition which traveled throu gh the
     premier design exhibitions and galleries of Europe, Asia and Africa. At the close of the
     exhibition, which spread the African design ethos through the urban cities of Milan, Paris,
     New York, London, Johannesburg, Tokyo and the African capitals amongst others, her
     designs are then housed in the Permanent Collection of the St Etienne Design Gallery in
     the south of France.
