SYNOPSIS:
GENERAL: A television show is the result of many different pictures and images, which are
combined to create the videospace. The Production Switcher is the equipment which enables us to
select from the many different camera shots, videotape playbacks, slides and film, character
generators, and remote feeds, which are available. Yet controlling which video source will go on
the air is only the beginning of the switcher production capabilities. The switcher combined with its
special effects generator, can shape a picture size and dimensions, combine a number of video
sources to produce a composite image, and with the addition of more sophisticated equipment,
produce a visual reality which exists only in the videospace. The Production Switcher is really a
multipart system which includes the program switcher, special effects generators and an array of
television monitors, which display both incoming video as well as the switcher output. The
Production Switcher plays a central role in the control room (where the program director and other
key personnel control the production operation) operations. The main function of the Production
Switcher is to switch or cut between two video sources or to combine them in a variety of ways.
The different methods used to combine two or more video are Mixing, Wiping and Keying.
SPECIFIC: The models we developed were the VPS-400G and VPS-600. Our work included all the
aspects in developing an engineering model of the Video Production Switcher, ranging from
designing and implementation of the hardware for the various cards to console layout, design and
art-work preparation. Some cards like sync generator (a device to generate sync signals. Its output
go to the cameras and perhaps to some of the other video equipment in the studio. This device is
sometimes built into the switcher) and matte generator (background color generators with hue and
brightness control) were already developed at C-DIT for other products and we could use them
with little modifications.
