Executive summary

This is a revised version of the original work I submitted with addition to improve my grade to
the standard required. Originally we were asked to form a group of about 4 or 5 people to
undertake a project using the second life 3D software application. We had to show our
understanding of the Virtual reality module by undertaking a task to build a relevant location
using this application.

My group consisted of myself, Faisal, Abdul, Ade and Adel.

We decided to build a fitness/leisure centre complete with a swimming pool, well equipped
gym, basketball court, car park and other facilities you would expect to find in such a place.

Target audience

We did not have a client assigned to us but we made up one which was the NHS choices, the
department that specialises in health and fitness in the UK. our aim was to show people how to
stay fit and tackles obesity in the UK as it is a growing problem with a growing increase of heart
related problems with people being too overweight and the obsession of the society we live in
today and people being obsessed with staying fit. The gym was a suitable project to undertake
because we felt as a group it was a relevant subject to tackle. Our target audience are people
suffering from obesity.

                                                                                                  1
Olumide Opaleye Virtual Reality Report

K0626111 Fitness/leisure Centre

Time scale

The overall project took about four months to complete starting from January and finishing in
May. This was very short time san for the project to be completed to the highest quality
required with software that we have never used or come across before. So we had to learn how
to do certain things as we went along, attending lectures and reading the notes.

There was no overall leader of the group because we all felt sharing the responsibilities as equal
would make everyone feel they have to add substantial contribution to the project being
completed without arguments or someone feeling that they done more work than the rest of the
team.

My main part was to build the swimming pool which I felt I done quite competently even though
it could have been much more better and with the time frame given and bearing in mind that
other modules had work that needed completion as well, this meant that our focus had to be
split into different avenues and this led to complacency with the work and priorities had to be
given to other modules i.e. our final year project and others that had earlier deadlines. But with
that in mind, I felt it was a success.

I did not only build the swimming pool because it wasn’t substantial enough but I also, built gym
equipments such as the treadmills, rowing machines and so on.

Implementation

Before we started building the leisure centre, the following steps needed to be followed:

 Creating a second life account by registering at secondlife.com
 Downloading the software into our personal computers to be able to work from home
     creating an avatar
 Gaining access to different locations to be able to build on them

                                                                                                     2

Technical Walkthrough

This is the designing phase of the project. We decided to each pick our strong points of
designing and then undertake our set tasks. We looked at existing leisure centres and decided to
base ours on how they were built.

As I stated earlier my main objective was to build the swimming pool which I am going to show
a step by step guide to how I achieved that goal. I also undertook the task of building some of
the gym equipment such as the rowing machines, thread mills and so on.

I realised my early mistake of not showing actual detail of how I achieved those designs which is
what a technical walkthrough is meant to show so below is a detailed technical walkthrough of
how these tasks were achieved.

This is what our building looked like
                               from the front

                                                                                                  3

Above is what our the back of the building
looked like showing the swimming pool,
Jacuzzi, basketball court and tennis court

The structure of the main building was designed mainly by Abdul and Adel.

                                                                                              4

I am now going to take you through how I achieved the designing of the objects I created
showing a step by step guide with detailed explanation and illustrations.

How I built the thread mills

I got the idea for my thread mills from the second life YouTube video above.

I created a tube I selected from the objects

                                                                                                 8

I then rotated it by holding down the ctrl button

                             I created duplicate by holding
                             down ctrl and D

                                                                 9

The tread mill was created mainly
using the tube and cube shape.

                        The picture shows what the
                        texture looks like

                            The different selections of
                            textures.

                               the change of texture to
commence. I done this for all
                               the individual parts which took
                               a bit of time

                                                                   The change of texture

The picture above is the final design of my thread mills. I held down the ctrl and clicked all the
parts I want linked together and after I pressed L to link the entire individual object together. I
then held down ctrl + D to make duplicates of the thread mills and repositioned them to get the
above results.

                                                                                                  11

How I built the rowing machines

I wanted my rowing machines to be similar to the one above.

I started by building the base of
the machine using a cube and
                                                              resizing it

                                                                                         12

                  I then made duplicates and
                  rotated them around and resized
                  them

                   I then created other
                   cubes for the
                   rubber edges.

                      Another cube was
                      created for the sit

                  For the wheel holder I
                  created a prism and resized,
                  rotated and positioned it

I created the wheel by using
                    a prism and resizing it.

                       For the footrest I flattened
                       cubes and positioned them
                       in the desired place.

                        I linked the objects all
                        together and selected the
objects I wanted to have the
same texture to save so at
the click of the button I can
                        change multiple objects

The picture above shows what my final design looks like. I created more duplicates to save me
the time of having to design each machine one by one.

                                                                                              15

How I built the bikes

For my bikes I also used the YouTube “a visit to the gym” as a platform to base my design on.

For the bikes I first used a torus for
                                            the creation of the wheel

                                                                                                   16

I then used a tube to create the
                  main frame of the bike

The main frame of the bike was
                                      actually created using the tube
shape as can be seen in the
                                      picture

                                                                     17

The bases of the bike which kept
it rooted and balanced to the
                        ground were created using
                        cubes which I flattened and
                        resized to appropriate scale.

For the seat of the bike, I used
                  hemisphere and selected the

For the chain system of the
cycle, I also used a hemisphere
that I flattened and reshaped to
                   get my desired effect.

                  To change the texture of
multiple objects at once, I held
                  down the shift button and
                  clicked on all the relevant
                  objects.

How I built the Swimming pool

I wanted my swimming pool to look similar to this one above.

This is what the final design of my swimming pool looked like. I am now going to talk about how
I created different parts of it.

                                                                                              21

K0626111 Fitness/leisure Centre

The ladder was created entirely using cubes which reshaped
and resized to get this result. For the steps, I created one and
made duplicates to have exactly the same size and I done the
same for the legs. I then changed the texture to get the correct
                  effect.

I created the steps using cubes and
I added the stone effect to make it
                  more realistic.

For the actual pool itself, I built brick walls
around it using cubes; I also created lanes to
give it the Olympic swimming pool look also
done using cubes. To make the water, I
created cubes then changed the texture to
give it the water effect, I also fiddled with the
transparency to make it look more realistic but
I did not get enough time to add coding to
create the effect of the water moving.

For the gravel base of the pool, I
created cubes and shaped them to
match the structure of the pool and
changed the texture to gravel to get
                             that effect.

                                                                              22

                                     Project management

As already mentioned there was no assigned client but we decided to go with the made up idea
that our client was the NHS choices. As a group I think we worked well enough together but our
time keeping and meeting where a bit disorganised partly due to the fact that we weren’t all
studying exactly the same modules therefore it was very rare for all of to meet up but when we
did, we had discussions of what was each person had to do and worked together with the time
we had.

We also swapped phone numbers, email addresses, Blackberry pins and face book as a way of
always keeping in touch and communication if we couldn’t meet up physically. This was very
effective because when we did come across those times that someone couldn’t meet up to do the
work together as a group or have discussions, we used this means as a way of updating them or
reminding them of what needed to be done and said.

In our group some people easily understood the application but I personally found it a bit time
consuming and frustrating, the others who were more competent at using the application did
offer help ad assistance by explaining and showing me how to build using second life. I was also
told of suitable sources to get help from on how to build and create objects.

I did feel as though the more competent builders in our team did undertake more work than the
rest of us but this was entirely their choice but with that being said no one sat back and watched
everyone else do the work. Everyone had a contribution to put forward in making sure the
building got completed and their assigned task was complete with us working together. Some
people obviously invested more time into some modules more than they did into others and the
results that we got proved that.

                                                                                                23

K0626111 Fitness/leisure Centre

                                              Review

Reviewing the project, I felt that if it was put forward to the actual client NHS choices it may not
have been to the standard expected. This I felt because the NHS is a large government
organisation, and with such a status comes high expectations especially if it concerns something
they are paying for, they expect the highest quality. Obviously with more time and resources
this aim would have been achieved.

Our aim was to create a fully functional and equipped gym; this was completed to an extent but
with some of it not achieved. Our leisure centre could have functioning object by using codes
and scripting to achieve this, we should have also used second life beta which was the updated
version of the one we used to design and it had better features to help with the building.

The time frame given as well could have been extended to give more times for improvements to
be made to the building with more complex designing techniques illustrated and practised.
Extra features could also have been added such as a running track, moving avatars performing
actions such as using the gym equipments, swimming in the pool and so on but we ran out of
time to implement such scripts and codes.

We also had problems linking all our objects together and on several occasions, some of the
objects we already built went missing and we had to create them again from scratch which
made more work pile on which resulted in the final work we submitted being not as good as we
would have liked it to have been and some features we already designed, not being able to be
implemented again to save time.

Help with understanding second life was found using YouTube to search on second life building
and how they were made and most of my particular designs where done using the template of
similar objects I found to design because the videos showed step by step guides of how to
design the object but it did not give scripting which meant everything was static.

I felt that more help could have been given relating to step by step guides of how to generate
coding and scripting, more shapes and objects could have been available to make building easier
and adding more lifelike effects.

But overall I think we done well enough as a group and the project was successful enough to the
required level of skill we needed to show.
