FADE IN:

INT. NIGHTCLUB - NIGHT
Young, hip, attractive couples and overly made-up,
semi-skankily dressed 20-something’s dance, drinks in hand,
to the thumping hip hop song in the background.
In his own world at the far end of the bar is CARTER, 24,
impeccably groomed, styled hair. He looks bored to death.
In the middle of the dance floor are...
LACEY, a blonde, smoking hot, free-spirit. She’s Carter’s
girlfriend.
LONNIE, mid 40’s -- though her attire suggests she’s younger
and also blonde is dancing with Lacey.
THE BAR
Carter takes a drink from his Heineken and bobs his head,
sort of to the beat.
                     LONNIE
Wooo ... ppps! There it is! Woops!
                (tries to engage her son)
                     CARTER
Mom. This isn’t Star Search and
           you’re not Britney Spears.
                     LACEY
           I don’t know, babe. Your mom’s got
           some serious moves out there.
                     LONNIE
                (back to dancing)
And you know this ... sista!
                (high five; fist pump)
           Woop shaka laka, shaka.
                     CARTER
Had enough of your girl’s night
           out?
                     LACEY
What? We just got here, babe...
Carter looks at his watch.

                                                 (CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: 2.

                       CARTER
             You’re leaving in the morning.
                       LONNIE
Oh, lighten up, Carter, she’s fine.
The girl knows what she likes ...
             and it’s all right here.
(runs her hands down her body)
The song has changed.
                       LACEY
                  (grabs his hand, lingering
                  release)
... It’s just you and your hand
             tonight.
Lonnie caresses his chin as she too bounces back into the
mass of bodies.
A DRUNK PATRON
Grabs a fist full of his perfectly pressed shirt.
CARTER
Spins around, a disgusted look on his mug.
                       PATRON
             I’m goin’ in...
He stumbles his way through the throng spilling his drink on
a couple of dancers.
First he moves on Lonnie; she swiftly eludes his Elvis-like
pelvis gyrations.
LACEY
Shakes what her momma gave her on him.
CARTER
Nearly chokes on his beer.
THE DANCE FLOOR
Carter grabs Lacey by her arm and turns to walk off.

THE PATRON
Steps in front of Carter, wipes his forehead; soaked from
sweat, and presses his hand into the middle of Carter’s
chest leaving a huge print.

                                                    (CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: 3.

Just as he is about to speak this...
CARTER
Punches the guy square in the chops and you could hear a pin
drop.
The DJ’s voice comes over the microphone.
                       DJ(V.O.)
No drinks on the dance floor. Thank
             you...
The patron falls back onto the dance floor between a YOUNG
COUPLE, his head smacks the floor, hard. His drink crashes
against onto the floor.
Lonnie goes to his aid.
A BOUNCER rushes in and tosses an innocent bystander.
The music starts again.

EXT. NIGHTCLUB - NIGHT
Carter, Lacey and Lonnie are walking down the street.
                       LACEY
             He wasn’t doing anything.
                       CARTER
Are you kidding? That guy was all
             over you...
                  (to Lonnie)
             And you.
                       LONNIE
Well, he’s obviously a man who
knows how to express his feelings
             in a more, normal fashion.
                       CARTER
What? Hey, I express myself just
fine. I just don’t want some drunk
sailor all over my future wife! Is
             that ok?
                       LACEY
                  (stops)
Your wife? Baby, are you serious?
             You wanna marry me?

                                                   (CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: 4.

She turns and grabs Lonnie and the two of them jump and down
the same as two giddy teenage girls would.
                       LONNIE
Carter... I don’t believe this is
             happening. You? Married?
                       CARTER
I wanted it to be a surprise to
             Lacey, and you.
                       LONNIE
What about your father? Have you
             told him?
Lacey hugs Carter tight around his neck and kisses him.
                       CARTER
No, not yet. But you know dad,
he’ll just... Well, you know dad.
                       LONNIE
             I know.
                       LACEY
This is the happiest night of my
life! I love you so much right now.
                       CARTER
You... love me so much -- right
             now?
                       LACEY
                  (happily)
             Yes... I do...
                  (to the streets)
             I’m getting married!
Lonnie looks long at her son and his new fiance...
Lacey wraps her in a big bear hug.
                       LACEY
Isn’t this the best night ever?
We’re gonna be living together. We
can go shopping together. And, we
can knit, and we can have girl’s
night out once a week --
                       CARTER
             Actually... I signed a lease for a
             house today.
Lonnie’s eyes go wide.

                                                   (CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: 5.

Lacey is even more jubilant than before.
                       LONNIE
             Wow... you really are serious.
Moving out of the basement and
             everything.
                       CARTER
That’s right mom, so now you can
walk around the house naked anytime
             you want.
                       LONNIE
                  (smugly)
             Yay...
Lacey pauses for a quick second and eyeballs Lonnie from her
embrace with Carter; secretly, seductively.
In the b.g. the ear splitting wail of AN AMBULANCE’S SIREN
ricochets off the empty buildings.

INT. A LARGE CHURCH - DAY
MARCOS RIVERA, late 40’s, impeccably groomed. He’s wearing a
white collar underneath a black suit, gawdy jewelry and a
smile as wide as the room.
Over this the roar of the CONGREGATION fills the sanctuary
to the rafters.
CARTER
Not clapping, in fact he’s never been more uncomfortable.
MARCOS
Arms outstretched, his face skyward, Bible in hand.
THE PARISHIONERS
In front of him form a long line that trails off the large
stage.
One by one they approach the gregarious reverend and he...
Holds his right hand up, speaks in an unintelligible tongue,
and uses the "power of God" to miraculously heal each
believer.
                                                   DISSOLVE TO:
                                                          6.

INT. OFFICE - DAY
Marcos’s collar sits in the middle of the heavy wood table
in front of a clear glass window he’s looking out of.
Carter’s voice comes from off screen.
                    CARTER(O.S.)
Gotta minute for an old friend?
                    MARCOS
               (a heavy Mexican accent)
Does my stand ajar...? Does the sun
not give life to the days of our
          lives?
                    CARTER
          It... does...?
                    MARCOS
          What is your problem?
                    CARTER
Are you even gonna look at me?
          Christ! You could at least
          acknowledge me.
                    MARCOS
               (faces front)
I do not have to see you to know
you’re near, my son. You reek of
          your mother’s crumby breakfast!
                    CARTER
Dad... When are you gonna get over
          it?
                    MARCOS
Never! I am a man, and she is my
wife! I will never accept what she
          has done.
MARCOS
Crosses the room to a small refrigerator in the corner,
pulls out two frosty beers and tosses one to Carter.
                    MARCOS
          Catch.
Fuush! Fuush!

                                                 (CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: 7.

                       CARTER
             Salud.

INT. HALLWAY - DAY
Marcos and Carter walk down the long hallway gulping their
beers as the go.
A couple of SUNDAY SCHOOL KIDS walks by.
                       KID#1
Hey reverend, you got one for me?
                       KID#2
Yeah, man, come on, let us have
             one.
                       MARCOS
                  (smiling)
You guys. Hey, okay! One for each
of you, but only two. And boys...
                       KID#1/KID#2
             Yes reverend?
                       MARCOS
                  (close)
Remember, if you tell anyone, I’ll
make your lives a living hell.
             Comprenden?
                       KID#1
You got yourself a deal, old man.
                       KID#2
             Fuckin A... Thank you, Jesus!
They run down the hallway high fiving towards Marcos’s
office.
                       CARTER
             Dad. You’re not really -- ?
                        MARCOS
             Sure, why not?
                  (turns towards the departing
                  boys)
The little one there, his mother’s
a real freak. By the time she gets
the little drunk home he’ll be
             ready for bed...

                                                  (CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: 8.

                          CARTER
             And you --
                       MARCOS
(gulps the last of his beer)
             Thank you, Jesus...

EXT. PARKING LOT - DAY
Marcos flings his empty into a trash can and chirps his car
alarm from one hundred yards away.
                       MARCOS
What’s up? I have not seen you in
six months... Do you need money?
                       CARTER
Dad, no... Well, how much ya got?
                       MARCOS
Nothing... for you. Now what is it?
                       CARTER
             I’m getting married.
Marcos stops, faces Carter, squeezes his cheeks tightly with
both hands, and...
LAUGHS
Boisterously, uncontrollably.
CARTER
Yanks away from him.
                          CARTER
             I knew it!
                       MARCOS
                  (still laughing)
             Ay, hijo... Come...
                  (arms outstretched)
I laugh because I am overcome with
joy for you. Not because I think
             you’re making the biggest fucking
             mistake of your life.
Carter is squished into his hug.

                                                   (CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: 9.

                       CARTER
You sure have a funny way. I mean,
I’m your only son. After me there’s
             no one else.
                       MARCOS
                  (sighs)
             Ay... This is true...
                       CARTER
Dad! Can you be happy here? This is
kinda big ya know? You’re gonna be
             a granddad one day.
                       MARCOS
                  (exclaiming)
             I -- will be a better grandparent
than your mother will. This -- I
             promise.
                  (Spanish too quick to
                  decipher)
                       CARTER
             It’s not a contest, Dad.
Marcos lets go.
                       MARCOS
                  (composes himself)
             So, who is she?
                       CARTER
She’s the greatest woman in the
             world for me.
                       MARCOS
             What does she do?
                       CARTER
She makes me crazy when I’m near
             her.
                       MARCOS
             Is she hot?
                       CARTER
             She’s perfect.
                       MARCOS
Good, so when are you planning to
             commit suicide?

                                                   (CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: 10.

                       CARTER
I’m not sure, but soon. I leased a
             house already.
                       MARCOS
                  (beaming)
My son, you’re becoming a man. This
is a very proud day for your
             father, you know that?
                  (a hug)
I suppose now would be a good time
             to tell you about --
                       CARTER
No. Dad, come on, man. I’ve been
             informed, ok?
                       MARCOS
Ay, but not by me, your father.
             There are certain... things a
father knows that your mother just
             can’t tell you about.
                       CARTER
Dad, you had The Playboy Channel.
                       MARCOS
                  (rolls it around)
             Good point.
Carter hugs Marcos as they continue their walk.

INT. CARTER’S CAR - DAY
Carter pulls up to the curb in front of a typical Southern
California home.
Some kids on bicycles roll by, their hot pink plastic safety
helmets listing on their heads.
Standing in the brown lawn is, CODY PEZESHKIAN, mid-to-late
20’s, wearing a white t-shirt emblazoned with "JESUS FREAK".
He is animated as he speaks to...
A PAIR OF YOUNGER GUYS
They are uneasy in front of him as they stand there and take
it.
Off screen Carter’s car door slams shut with a boom.

                                                   (CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: 11.

                       CODY
             You two are this close...
(his index and thumb in their
                  faces)
             You know this!?
                        CARTER(O.S.)
Punch him. Right in the mouth. He’s
             a bleeder.
Cody whirls around. A smile instantly washes over his angry
grill.
                        CODY
             What’s up motherfucker...?
                   (to the young guys)
You two fucks, go. Get -- out of my
             face!
The two younger guys scamper off, afraid.
                       CARTER
Is that your idea of gettin’ the
             job done?
                       CODY
It is when you’re dealing with --
                  (towards the house)
             fucking idiots!
                       CARTER
             How’s it looking?
Cody puts his arm around Carter’s shoulder and they walk
towards the front door.
Just then one of the bike riding kids’ voice is heard.
                       KID ON BIKE(O.S.)
             Hey. Hey, you two boneheads.
                       CODY
                  (without turning around)
             Fuck off, kid.
                       KID ON BIKE
Oh yeah, you think you’re pretty
bad ass don’t ya, dude? See how bad
ass you are when my dad gets home
from church and beats your ass.

Cody, what the fuck man? You didn’t

The friends turn to face the kid on the bike.
                       CODY
Hey, kid, go tell your momma my
             legs are still wet.
                       KID ON BIKE
Hey dumbass, tell your mom to keep
it down when I bone her. The
             neighbors are complainin’.
His bike buddy screeches up. They high five, laugh, and roll
out.

INT. LIVING ROOM - DAY
The living room is littered with dilapidated furniture, old
newspapers and life-size posters of Sugar Ray.
                       CARTER
Dude, you shouldn’t talk to kids
like that. Suppose he was your son
             --
                       CODY
             Look, that’s no kid, man. He’s a
             fucking midget with an attitude.
You know this? Yeah, last week I
was in the backyard, you know,
             doing my thing --
                       CARTER
             Your thing...
                       CODY
Puttin’ my mack down. Smack it up,
flip it, rub it down --
                       CARTER
             Oh no!
Crash!
The two younger guys are standing there, dumbstruck, nervous
as hell. Large shards from the broken pane cover the floor.

                         BOTH
             It broke.
                       CODY
And why did it do that? Was it
             unhappy as a window?

They don’t move.
                         CARTER
             Cody...
                         CODY
             Here.
(points to a spot in front of
                  him)
Now! Goddammit! I will snatch your
eyes out and feed them your mouths!
             Do you know this!?
                       BOTH
             I’m outta here.
                       CODY
             Glass is everywhere. These floors,
these floors are brand damn new.
                       CARTER
Cody, forget about that for a
minute. I gotta tell you something.
                       CODY
You wanna tell me where I can steal
             another picture window from?
                       CARTER
No. But I’ll tell you where you’ll
             be on my wedding day...
                       CODY
What? What is this marriage shit?
I’m up to my ass in a million

                       CODY
Shit, man. This flip’s costing me
             way more than it’s worth.
                       CARTER
                  (stops)
Uh, Cody, you are aware you’re
fixing this up for me, right?
                       CODY
Yeah, so how do you feel about a
             new wall?
                       CARTER
Did you hear me? I’m getting
married. I’m not joking this time
either. No Vegas chapel and way too
             much champagne.
                       CODY
                  (chuckles)
Married to who? You don’t even have
             a girlfriend.
                       CARTER
Yeah... well, we kinda just met.
                       CODY
             When?

             When?
                       CARTER
Last month, ok? Knock it off. She’s

             online.
                       CODY
Bro. Didn’t you get the memo every
other horny dude sittin’ alone in
             his mom’s basement got? Online
             modeling equals internet porn star,

Fuck off. She models swimsuits and
             winter clothes. It’s just a
             part-time gig until she finishes
             school.
                       CODY
Right, and I’m selling you this
hell hole for a million dollars.
Dude, have you learned nothing from
             me after all these years?
                       CARTER
Not to ever date an illegal
             immigrant? Say no to drugs?
                       CODY
             That was all one big
             misunderstanding. Besides, they
             dropped the charges after she
             jumped the border... Esta bien.
                       CARTER
             You’re not making any sense.
                       CODY
Neither are you, man. Why do you
want to get married anyway? You
know how many married couples there
             are in America?
                          CARTER
             Millions.
                       CODY
             Exactly. But they’re gonna get
             divorced.
                          CARTER
             Half.
                       CODY
             Whatever. I need a window.
He whips out his cellular phone and presses a button.
                       CARTER
You’re gonna be my best man, right?
             You practically can’t say no.

Hello, I need another window. What
do you mean who is this? I’m the
guy who’s about to spend five
             hundred more bucks on your
             easy-break fucking window.
                  (removes the phone)
Dude, I’m fuckin’ with ya’. I
wouldn’t miss this for the world.
Carter tussles his best friend’s hair.
Cody continues haggling a better price for his window.

INT. CARTER’S ROOM - DAY
Unframed pictures of Carter with his friends; some male,
some female, cover the veneered walls.
The queen sized bed is meticulous.
Carter enters frame just as Lonnie’s voice is heard from off
screen.
                       LONNIE(O.S.)
             Have you seen my oil?
                       CARTER
It’s probably where you left it.
MASSAGE ROOM
Lonnie pokes her head in, scans the room with her eyes...
BOTTLE OF OIL...
That reads "WARMS ON CONTACT" stands next to a massage
table.
THE KITCHEN
Carter sits at the island, pours a bowl of cereal. He lifts
a dripping scoop and shoves it in his mouth.
LONNIE
Wearing a revealing sports bra and shorts that barely cover
her hips, walks into the kitchen, slides the bottle of
warming oil across the island and it splashes milk from
Carter’s bowl.

                  (chewing)
             I see.
                       LONNIE
             So, when’s the big day?
                       CARTER
             I haven’t actually asked her yet. I
want it to be romantic. Got any
             ideas?
LONNIE
Picks up a perfectly yellow banana.
                       LONNIE
             Here’s something for ya’...
                  (faces Carter)
Don’t do what your father did when
he popped the question to me.
                       CARTER
What, did he do something stupid?
                       LONNIE
No, unless you consider jumping on
stage at a Ramones concert, falling
backwards off that same stage and
then proposing to me in the back of
the ambulance at eighty miles an
             hour stupid.
                       CARTER
No way. Dad did all of that?
                       LONNIE
I have video footage. Nearly went
             to jail for that one...
                       CARTER
             I promise you I won’t embarrass
             you.
                       LONNIE
It’s not me that I’m worried about,
it’s that poor girl. You only get
one shot to convince her you’re the
man she wants to spend the rest of
             her life with, you know?

Carter pushes his soggy cereal around with his spoon.
                       CARTER
’Til death do us part, huh?
                       LONNIE
Or until neither of you can stand
the sight of each other. Which
             could still lead to death.
Carter smiles, rises and...
A WOMAN appears at the back door.
Carter opens the door. The woman walks in without
acknowledging him.
                          CARTER
                     (follows her with his eyes)
             Hi...
                        LONNIE
             Carter, you remember Mrs. Bradford,
             don’t you?
                       MRS. BRADFORD
I was a little bigger before.
                       CARTER
                  (a closer look)
             Mrs. Bradford, my kindergarten
             teacher? You’re --
                       LONNIE
             Happier than she’s ever been.
                          CARTER
             ... Yeah.
The two women embrace and kiss.
CARTER
His faced contorted, turns on heels and beats a hasty
retreat.
                       CARTER
             This is just sick.
He slams the door.
Mrs. Bradford inspects the bottle of lube.

                  (seductively)
             I hope you’re ready... Mrs.
             Bradford...
Mrs. Bradford flashes a black plastic phallus and a devilish
grin...
                       MRS. BRADFORD
             I was up all night...
The two women giggle, exit, headed for the massage room.

EXT. CAR LOT - DAY
Carter pulls past the perfect rows of gleaming new German
automobiles to a parking stall.
A group of WORKERS in street clothes is gathered near THE
SERVICE ENTRANCE smoking and joking.
Carter chirps his alarm and approaches the entrance.
                       WORKER#1
Hey, heard you’re gonna be losing
             your player card soon...
                       CARTER
Don’t you have an order to fill?
                       WORKER#2

             totally flaming middle managers
could afford to be players. Homo.
                       CARTER
Keep it up guys. Hey, is that
             border patrol?
All whip their heads around and look.
                       WORKER#1
Very funny, boss. Yeah, real funny,
             except, I ain’t Mexican, I’m Puerto
Rican. I’m supposed to be here.
                       WORKER#2
Hey! And I’m not? You sayin’ I
don’t have a right to be here, man?

Yeah, that’s the new car we just
             got in... right?
                       WORKER#1
So is it true? You tyin’ the know
             or what?
                       CARTER
Not that you need to know, but yes.
And, how do you know that?
Just then Cody’s voice comes over the public address.
                       CODY(O.S.)
Attention customers. I have a very
             important announcement to make.
That man you see there harassing
those very hard working young men
             is getting married. That’s right,
he’s going down the road to no
balls and no more hot strippers
with jewelry in their tongues and
             watermelons growing from their very
             skeletal chests...
A few CUSTOMERS turn to find...
CARTER...
Hiding his face as he hurries through the large lobby to his
office.
The workers continue to rail against each other.

INT. CARTER’S OFFICE - DAY
The comfortable space is filled with Carter’s achievements;
a framed degree from San Diego State University, top seller
awards from previous years, a picture of him and Cody with
the BOSS.

                                                   (CONTINUED)

Just as he sits and begins to look at the big stack of
invoices in front of him...
CODY...
Busts in and snatches the paper from his hand...
                          CODY
             Not now --
                       CARTER
             Give me that.
                  (tries to grab the paper)
                       CODY
             I said let’s go.
THE CAR LOT
A very attractive WOMAN in a daringly short mini skirt and
big black shades is admiring one of the cars.
Cody shoves Carter towards her, he bumps her backside and
she...
SMILES
                       WOMAN
                  (without turning around)
You always were afraid of me.
                       CARTER
Gina, what can I do for you?
                       GINA
             This is a business, right?
                       CODY
             The best in SoCal, baby.
Carter turn to him and shoos him away.
                       CARTER
             Anything in particular?
                       GINA
As a matter of fact, yes. There is
something you can do for me.
                          CARTER
             No.

             Just like old times...
                   (as she brushes by)
Don’t worry, I just wanna test ride
             it...
                       CARTER
One of our salesmen will be right
             with you.
                       GINA
             I asked for you specifically.
Besides... you already know how I
             drive.

INT. CAR - DAY
Carter has a death grip on his seatbelt and the door of the
convertible. The rushing wind pushes his head to the
headrest.
GINA
Smiles as worried drivers scramble to clear a path.
                       GINA
                  (straight ahead)
How much can this thing take?
                       CARTER
             I’ve never taken it out...
                       GINA
             A shame, it’s got a lot of...
                  (accelerates)
             Power.
                       CARTER
What do you want from me?
RED LIGHT
The tires smoke as the zooming car barely stops.
Their bodies are thrown back against the leather seats.
                       GINA
                  (orgasmic)
Wow. I’m sorry, you were saying?

                  (a crazy look)
What is wrong with you? You --
                       GINA
             Want a second chance.
                       CARTER
You’re nuts. Take me back, right
             now!
                       GINA
             Not until you say it.
                       CARTER
Say what? That you’re still a
psycho bitch in need of Dr. Phil?
GREEN LIGHT
Gina guns it through the intersection.
                                                  SHOCK CUT:

EXT. CAR LOT - DAY
The convertible screams into the lot.
                       GINA
                  (exiting the vehicle)
See ya Friday night. Oh, and
Carter... Don’t stand me up again.
CARTER
Immobile, his head still glued to the headrest.
                       CARTER
             Wouldn’t think of it...
Gina sashays off. Satisfied.

INT. SHOW ROOM - DAY
Spotless glass windows beam light on the status symbols
while some interested CUSTOMERS browse the collection.
A sleek information desk sits in front of a row of offices.
CODY
Peeks his head from inside the last office door just as...

CARTER
Steps in front of him and shoves him inside.
He blisters Cody with a couple of jabs and...
CODY
Rushes straight on...
They tangle, exchange a few more blows then...
CARTER
Slaps a Ric Flair style figure-four-leg-lock on his buddy.
CODY
Pain etched on his face, slaps the carpet with his hands and
screams like a little girl.
ARBALD, 55, wearing a pale blue long sleeve shirt and a
scowl, steps into the office. In his hand is a MANILA
FOLDER.
                       ARBALD
Is this what I pay you for? To lose
to your friend in a wrestling
             match?
                       CODY
             Dad, help em out here!
                       ARBALD
Once again you have disgraced your
mother and myself. I hope you are
happy with yourself, my son --
                       CODY
                  (arms flailing)
             Make him stop, dad!?
                       ARBALD
Let him go, or I will fire you
             both.
Carter wrenches the hold tighter before getting up.
                       ARBALD
             Get up you...

             Dad!?
                       ARBALD
We have a shipment coming in --
                  (pushing the folder into his
                  chest)
Ah, just read it and do it.
Cody extends his hand up to his father.
                       ARBALD
Why don’t you just stay down there?
             Apparently it suits you.
He departs.
SUPER: LATER

INT. CARTER’S OFFICE - DAY
Carter smiles as he coos into the receiver of the phone on
his desk.
                       CARTER
             I’ve never been mister anything.
And now I’m gonna be Mister --
                       LACEY(V.O.)
             That’s great babe... Right there,
             yeah... There --
                       CARTER
                  (looks at the receiver)
             Honey...? Are you alone?
                       LACEY
             Yes.
                       CARTER
Honey, I can’t wait to get you
here. I’m gonna take you --
                       CODY
                  (pops his head in)
Where? Your mom’s basement for some
             hot monkey sex?
                       CARTER
             Hold on, honey. What?

                       CODY
Hey, I’m outta here. Gotta little
-- personal business to take care
             of.
                       CARTER
             What about your old man?
                       CODY
                  (a quick look behind)
He’s previewing some new videos in
his office... With the door locked,
             and the lights off.
                       CARTER
             Another day, another hundred
             thousand dollar car sold...
                       CODY
                  (drops his head slightly)
             Yeah, that’s my dad.
                       CARTER
                  (allows the receiver to slowly
                  fall away from his ear)
             Hey, Code, I didn’t mean to --
                       CODY
It’s true, dude. My dad worked so
hard to build this place, everyday
he was right here, doing something.
And I... If it weren’t for him I’d
be out there detailing cars with
those guys. I just don’t know how
to show him my appreciation, you
             know?
                       ARBALD
                  (a booming voice)
Tomorrow you will wash every car on
the lot. That would make me happy.
CODY
Cringes as he turns to see...
ARBALD
Arms folded, looming, large behind him. He shakes an
accusatory finger at Carter before he departs.

(the receiver back to his ear)
             So, Friday...

EXT. TERMINAL - DAY
Carter pulls up to the curb. He rolls the window down to
reveal...
LACEY
Standing, surrounded by at least six brimming bags, waving.
CARTER
Tries unsuccessfully to slam the trunk shut.
THE BACK DOOR
He heaves the last heavy bag onto the back seat and slams
the door.

INT. CARTER’S CAR - DAY
Carter drives along the street.
                       CARTER
How’d you get all that stuff on the
             plane with you?
                       LACEY
             It’s a secret.
                       CARTER
Well, why did you... bring so much
             of it, with you?
                       LACEY
             I’m here! Forever...
                       CARTER
Wha -- Forever? Like you’re never
gonna be gone, not one day, not for
an hour, we’re going to do this,
             forever?
                        LACEY
                   (a kiss)
And ever, baby! Are you happy, or
             what?

             Oh, I’m somethin’.
                  (inaudible)
             Just not sure what, yet.
                       LACEY
                  (taking it all in)
I love it here already. Warm
             weather, the beach --
                       CARTER
Those beaches, they get really cold
             at night.
                       LACEY
             The sun’s always shining.
                       CARTER
It rains here -- a lot.
                       LACEY
             The restaurants here are
             fabulous...

EXT. CARTER’S HOUSE - NIGHT
Carter slams his car door shut. The porch light lights up
behind Lacey as she stands, bags at her feet, and waves as
he drives off.
After a second or two, Lacey looks down at the key in her
hand and walks toward the house.
THE PORCH
Lacey sits on the top step, forlorn.
THE DOOR
Opens quietly and Lonnie appears on the other side of it.
                       LONNIE
He’ll be back after he’s buried his
             bone.
                       LACEY
             We haven’t even --
                       LONNIE
             I know...
(she puts an arm around her

                       LONNIE (cont’d)
Shouldn’t be that easy, right? Who
do men think they are, right?
                       LACEY
                  (perks up)
Right... Who does that man think he
is leaving his woman alone at
night? I mean, there’re guys who
would pay to be with me, good
money, too. He wants to play...
I’ll play. Let’s see how you like
it when I’m not there for you,
Carter Rivera! Huh!? You won’t, and
I’ll love every second of it --
                       LONNIE
Kick ’im in the balls, honey!
                       LACEY
Yeah! I think I will! Thanks!
                        LONNIE
Don’t mention it... You wanna come?
             In I mean.
                        LACEY
Yeah, I’m comin’ in... And let him
try and stop me. I’ll kick ’im in
             the balls!
Lonnie smiles slightly as she shuts the door behind them.

EXT. CAR LOT - NIGHT
Worker#1 waits at the back end of the lonely lot. He shields
his eyes from the blinding headlights of...
A DELIVERY TRUCK
As it pulls into the lot Worker#1 moves to the side.
The driver’s door pushes open and the driver, wearing all
black, hands Worker#1 a YELLOW FORM which he pockets. The
two men shake hands and the delivery truck drives off.
Even in the dark it’s clear that this delivery is not the
same as most others.
CAR
Dark, long, delicate and breathtaking.

WORKER#1
Traces its soft contours. He smiles, stands back, looks it
over in awe then...
A HORN AND HEADLIGHTS
Startles him. He immediately throws his hands high into the
air and sinks to the ground.
                       WORKER#1
             I didn’t steal it... I work here...
             I’m not Mexican --
A car door slams with a boom. A second passes then...
CARTER
Towering over the cowering worker.
                       CARTER
             Interlace your fingers behind your
             head -- Now!
                       WORKER#1
             Inter...
                  (he fumbles his hands)
I don’t know how to, officer.
                       CARTER
No speaka de English? Come on,
             you...
He pushes a knee into the worker’s back.
                       WORKER#1
No, ay, papi -- No -- don’t club me
to death like you did that guy on
             TV last week... No...
                       CARTER
                  (hysterical)
             Please. Please, papi... Not so
             tough after all, huh, Manny?
                        MANNY
                  (near tears)
             No... I --
                  (stops, turn slowly)
You, maricon. What the fuck, man!?
Dusts himself off.

                       MANNY
I’m tougher than you’ll ever be,
             company boy.
                       CARTER
             Spare me.
                  (attention on the car)
So... this is it? Boss’ new ride.
             This thing is hot.
                       MANNY
No, I swear, it’s all legal.
                  (whips out the form)
Got the papers right he --
                       CARTER
Hey, calm down, it’s just me and
             you, man. Calmate...
                       MANNY
Shit, every since that one day when
I got chased man... It aint never
             been the same...
                  (swirls finger around temple)
             I think it made loco...
                       CARTER
Yeah, right, just make sure this
car doesnt’ make you go loco, ok?
             Or we’re both screwed.
He tosses a set of keys to Manny.
                       MANNY
Don’t worry, man. I gonna take
             excellent care of her.
                       CARTER
Lock it in the garage and leave it
             ’til Monday.
                  (takes a few steps, stops)
Oh, and, Manny. Not a scratch.
                       MANNY
                  (waves both hands)
             I got you. Don’t worry...
                                                       32.

INT. CARTER’S CAR - NIGHT
Carter steps on the gas, music plays, he drives off.
THE CAR
Manny walks over to it, smooths over it once more, smiles...

INT. THE CAR - NIGHT
Manny smashes the gas pedal to the floor. Music blasts from
the speakers.
                    MANNY
This car is worth more than my
          house. Wooo!

EXT. A BAR - NIGHT
The name over the door reads: "SHARK BAR"
Seated at the bar is Marcos, he looks as if he just finished
delivering a sermon.
The place is quickly filling up.
The FEMALE BARTENDER sets two beers in front of him.
                    BARTENDER
          One for your friend?
                    MARCOS
It is for you, my darling. Please,
accept it as a down payment.
                    BARTENDER
Depends on what’s bein’ paid for?
                    MARCOS
               (leans in)
          Your beauty.
                    BARTENDER
               (pauses for effect, laughs)
Aren’t you supposed to be tellin’
people not to do this sort of
thing? I mean, you’re still wearing
          your collar and all.

                                                 (CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: 33.

                       MARCOS
It’s just a formality. In the
morning I will repent and all will
be good again... So, why don’t we
             wash away our sins, together?
Just then ANOTHER FEMALE BARTENDER walks over and wraps an
arm around the first bartender’s waist.
                       OTHER BARTENDER
             Tough customer, babe?
                       BARTENDER
             Nah, he’s just confused.
The two ladies kiss and walk off arm in arm.
Marcos clears his head and takes a hearty drink from his
beer. He mutters something, but it is rapid and incoherent.
CARTER
Squeezes his way through the now packed house.
He reaches the bar where Marcos is sitting.
                        CARTER
             Dad?
Marcos is sort of glum.
                       MARCOS
                  (springs to life)
Hijo! Come, sit down next to your
             father.
He pushes the beer in front of Carter.
                        MARCOS
             For you.
                       CARTER
             It’s warm... Anyway, dad, it’s
about this whole wedding thing --
                       MARCOS
You’ve decided to call it all off,
             right?
                       CARTER
Well, I’m not sure. I want to be
             with her, it’s just, I don’t know
if it’s for all the right reasons.

                                                  (CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: 34.

                       MARCOS
Hijo, your mother and I got married
for all the right reasons. Sex...
ok, perhaps we’re not a very good
             example.
                       CARTER
Dad, you and mom got married
             because your parents were Catholic.
                       MARCOS
             This is true.
                       CARTER
I need more than that. I need... I
             need that connection, you know,
dad? I need to want to run home
every night after a long day and
see her smile and it melts me. I
want to know that if we take this
             chance that it’ll last forever...
                  (fondles his beer)
             Dad?
Carter turns to face his dad.
MARCOS
Misty eyed.
                       MARCOS
Hijo... What you are searching for
is more than a smile, it is more
than just a feeling. What you seek
is very elusive, it changes with
the winds, at once it is
             everywhere... And then, it is
gone... Ay... What you seek is
             love, hijo...
                  (lowers his head, voice
                  softens)
... Something that your mother and
             I never had.
GINA
Leans over the bar and engages the first female bartender...
Ring... Ring...
Marcos reaches into his jacket and pulls out a shiny cell
phone.

                        MARCOS
                  (face lights up)
             My love...
                  (spins his stool around)
             I want you desperately, too...
Carter lifts his beer and...
GINA
Stops in front of him. He nearly chokes, beer spills.
                       GINA
             Surprised to see me?
                        CARTER
                   (wipes shirt off)
Hey, I thought I’d see you out
             here.
                       GINA
You agreed to meet me here,
             remember?
                       CARTER
             So...
                  (an uneasy moment)
             What’s new with you?
                       GINA
                  (serious)
             I could be pregnant...
                       CARTER
             I’m not surprised --
                       GINA
             What, does that mean?
                       MARCOS(O.S.)
Yes, I will be there soon, my
precious. I can’t wait for you to
             do that to me either...
He closes the phone, spins back around.
                       GINA
                  (hands on hips)
What was I, just another one of
             your slores?

                       MARCOS
On that note, I must go.
Marcos rises and departs without so much as a goodbye.
Though, he does seem to smirk just slightly...
                       CARTER
Well, it wasn’t me who slept with
             my best friend.
                       GINA
             I’m sorry... I was drunk.
                       CARTER
             That’s really believable, except
the fact that... you don’t drink!
                        GINA
                  (sheepish)
             I’m sorry?
                       CARTER
Look, we’ve been over for a year.
I’ve moved on and, apparently, you
             need to move on now.
                       GINA
I hooked up with Cody that night.
                       CARTER
I’m shocked. What exactly do you
             want?
                          GINA
             The truth.
                       CARTER
You’re ape shit. There, gotta go.
Gina blocks his path.
                       GINA
If she’s really better then you
have my blessing to marry her. If I
             win...
                       CARTER
Your what!? How long have you been
             in here?
                       GINA
Long enough to know you still want
             this...

Gina drapes herself over him. Kisses him.
FIRST FEMALE BARTENDER
Snaps a picture of the couple. Carter recoils. The bartender
hands the camera off to Gina.
                       GINA
             Consider this a down payment.
                        CARTER
             On what?
                       GINA
             Your future.
                  (turns to walk away, stops,
                  gestures with her fingers)
             That much...
                       CARTER
             ... It’s me, right?
Gina doesn’t break.
                       CARTER
             ... It’s gotta be me.

INT. BOSS’S CAR - NIGHT
MARISOL, "MARI", 22, pretty in a tough girl way, is tearing
down a crowded urban street. Her dark hair flies in the wind
behind her. Uptempo music shouts from the car’s system.
MANNY
Pallid, in the same posture we saw Carter in earlier.
A freeway entrance sign zips by.
                       MARI
             California love, muthufuckuz!
                       MANNY
I’m going to die. The boss’ll do it
             first, then my mom.
                       MARI
                  (over the music)
             What? Are you ok?
                  (kisses him)
             I love this car.

             I just wanna live.
                       MARI
             I’m takin’ the freeway...
INSERT: SIGN "MEXICO 10 MI"
The car swerves across the lanes, barely making the on-ramp.

EXT. THE HOUSE - NIGHT
Cody and the two younger guys remove debris from the crappy
house.
A car rolls past.

INT. MASSAGE ROOM - NIGHT
A candle’s shadow flickers on the wall next to...
THE MASSAGE TABLE
Lacey is lying face-down, a towel covers her legs. Sensuous
music plays softly in the background.
LONNIE
Glides into the room, beaming, the bottle of warming oil in
her hand.
She’s wearing a white robe and, apparently, nothing
underneath.
                       LONNIE
                  (methodically rubs oil on)
             My goodness... You’re all knots.
                       LACEY
                  (settles in)
Mhmm... That is so exquisite. I
             haven’t been pampered in years.
                       LONNIE
                  (softly)
... You can have this everyday if
             you like...
                       LACEY
             Oh, I like. There’s nothing I
wouldn’t do to feel this good,
             everyday.

Lonnie’s hands slowly move down and over her lower back.
                       LACEY
                  (hoarse)
             Oh... Yeah... that’s it...
                       LONNIE
             How does... that feel?
                       LACEY
                  (her mouth a circle)
             Like heaven...
Lonnie begins to strip away her towel when...
A car door slams.
CARTER
Twists the front door knob and pushes the door open.
THE LIVING ROOM
Carter looks
around. He goes to
inspect the kitchen and
backyard. He
enters the hallway.
                       CARTER
Mom? Babe? Where you guys at?
He sees light coming from the cracked door to the massage
room and...
THE DOOR
Flies open with a flourish nearly extinguishing the flame.
                          CARTER
             Mom.
                          LONNIE(O.S.)
             Yes, dear?
                       CARTER
             What are you doing?
Lonnie is bent over the table.
                       LONNIE
             Called cleaning, everybody’s doin’
             it...

                       CARTER
             Right. Is Lacey around?
                       LONNIE
You know, she came all this way to
see you and the first thing you do
is leave her, alone. Ha, reminds me
             of your father.
                       CARTER
Well, at least I came back.
                       LONNIE
This much is true. I didn’t see
your father for a week after we got
             married.
                       CARTER
Mom, you haven’t been filling her
head with your man-hater talk have
             you?
                       LONNIE
             ... I wouldn’t think of it.
Carter shoots an ’I’m not so sure about that look’ towards
her as she returns to her cleaning.
Carter departs.
CARTER’S BEDROOM
Lacey is unfolding clothes from the suitcase on the bed.
Carter walks in and quietly approaches her from behind. He
caresses her gingerly.
Lacey turns around and...
                       LACEY
Don’t even think about it. I’m not
             falling for that one.
                       CARTER
             What the hell?
                       LACEY
                  (pushes him away)
She told me you’d try that
             approach. Good thing, too, any
other time I would have been all
over you like a cheap slore.

                       CARTER
             Well, earlier --
                         LACEY
                    (points)
             Out!
                       CARTER
Out of where? This is my room...
                       LACEY
                  (snatches a few things from
                  the suticase)
             Fine. I’ll leave.
                       CARTER
             Where are you going?
Lacey storms out.
                       CARTER
But, you just got here. We have to
             sleep together.
                       LACEY
             I’m sleeping with your mother.
THE BASEMENT
Carter busts out of the room and tries to cut Lacey off. She
evades him. He trips over something by the stairs.
LACEY
Slams the door hard in Carter’s face just as he reaches the
top step.
CARTER
Wobbles a bit, tumbles back down the short flight of stairs.

INT. LONNIE’S ROOM - NIGHT
Lacey walks in and plops down on the bed next to Lonnie who
is applying lotion to her legs.
                         LONNIE
             Fight?
                         LACEY
             Big one.

                       LONNIE
             Where is he?
                          LACEY
             Asleep.
                       LONNIE
             You stayin’ over?
                         LACEY
                    (defiantly)
             Yes.
Lonnie hands her the bottle of lotion.
                          LONNIE
             You mind?
                          LACEY
             Love to.
Carter appears in the doorway, groggy.
                       CARTER
             I won’t... You can’t... She’s my...
                          LONNIE
             Carter...?
                       CARTER
             Mom, is that you?
                       LONNIE
             You’re sleep walking again, dear.
Go back to your room now.
                       CARTER
                  (a silly grin)
Mom, can we have cereal for dinner
             today?
                       LONNIE
Yes, dear. Anything you want. Go on
             now...
                       CARTER
             I love you, mom...
He stumbles off.
LONNIE
Rises from the bed and closes the door.

LACEY
Follows her with her eyes, mesmerized by her still youthful
body.
LONNIE
Turns, sizes up her prey, goes in for the kill...

EXT. CAR - NIGHT
Mari is riding shotgun while a HANDSOME YOUNG MAN sits low
in the driver’s seat.
MANNY
Sits on the sidewalk bound.
THE CAR...
Peels away from the scene.
                       MANNY
How am I supposed to get home...
                  (tries to stand, falls over)
             Just shoot me...
Two VATOS stop in front of Manny. They speak in Spanish.
                       VATO#1
How much you think he’s got?
                       VATO#2
Oye! Gimme all your cash, buey...
                       MANNY
Guys, help a brother out. Come on,
man. We’re family... viva la raza.
                       VATO#1
                  (pushes him onto his stomach)
What an idiot. I’ll check his
             pockets.
Vato#2 brandishes a gun.
                       VATO#2
             Don’t move, Americano.
                       MANNY
See, no soy, no soy. Ah -- I’m de
             El Salvador.

                  (shields his face)
             Don’t kill me!
The two robbers disregard his pleadings.
                       MANNY
                  (desperate)
My brother’s the leader of MS-13...
With this the two bad guys stop and give each other an
affirmative nod.
                       MANNY
... And, I’m gonna tell him how...
... How you guys helped me out here
tonight. There’ll be a bag of guns
and drugs waiting for you tomorrow
-- All yours, and, two chicas...
             Whadda you say, guys?
THE TWO BAD GUYS
Calmly walk away, counting their score.
Manny sobs quietly on the ground.
                       MANNY
             Fuck... Fu-u-u-ck!

EXT. BACKYARD - DAY
It’s a sunny day out.
LACEY
Sits on the edge of the above ground hot tub testing the
water with her toes.
CARTER
Approaches from behind with a bandage covering his head
wound.
                       CARTER
Babe, you know what happened to my
             head?
                       LACEY
             You.

                       CARTER
... Anything you wanna tell me?
                       LACEY
             I hope you suffer.
                       CARTER
Great. Babe, listen, I’m sorry I
had to leave you that way
             yesterday. I --
                       LACEY
                  (turns half way around)
Liar, she told me you’d probably
             try to play the victim.
                       CARTER
(pulls a black box from behind
                  his back)
Lacey Dieter, will you marry me?
At the sight of the gift Lacey wells up, throws her arms
around him, and says...
                       LACEY
             Yes, I will.
They embrace.
LONNIE
Crosses the yard to the jacuzzi.
                       LONNIE
So, we look happy this morning.
                       CARTER
                  (from the embrace)
             Happiest couple in San Diego!
                       LACEY
                  (flashes the ring)
             He proposed.
                       LONNIE
Oh my, what a lovely trinket.
Carter and Lacey embrace again, kiss.
Lonnie looks on cynically.
                                                        46.

INT. LIVING ROOM - DAY
Lacey is sitting on the couch talking on her cell phone.
                     LACEY
          A big one.
(looks at the rock on her
               finger)
          About... ten thousand. It’s so
gorgeous. Maybe I’ll wear it for a
few days after this. Girl’s gotta
          have her bling, right?
She pauses for a second to listen.
                    LACEY
I won’t, believe me, he’s so not my
type. His mom? She’s ok, I think
she’s into me or something. Oh,
yeah, I know just how to handle
her. A little attention, some empty
          promises of always being together
and she’ll be all in. And before
she knows what hit her I’ll be long
          gone.
She sinks back into the cushions admiring the ring. Lonnie
calls out from another place in the house.
                    LACEY
As a matter of fact I think I hear
her cackling now. Gotta go. I can’t
wait to see you, too, babe. Bye.
Lonnie calls out again as she enters the living room.
                       LONNIE
          All ready?
She closes her phone, rises, smiles.
                    LACEY
               (mawkish)
          Can’t wait.
Lacey heads for the door as Lonnie stands back and gives her
a questioning look.
                                                        47.

EXT. CAR LOT - DAY
Arbald slowly paces in front of a lineup of the workers. A
printed photo in his hand.
As he passes each they invariably hold their breath so as
not to even breathe on the man.
He stops in front of Manny.
                    ARBALD
          Where is it?
                    MANNY
          Where is what, it?
                     ARBALD
(pushes a photo in his face)
This! Now, I know you know. Would
you like to know how I know you
          know?
                    MANNY
               (a quizzical look)
          ... Yeah.
                    ARBALD
               (points up toward a
               surveillance camera)
I saw you. Now, what did you do
          with it?
                    MANNY
          Aw, that guy...
               (waves his hand)
          ... That guy wasn’t me.
                    ARBALD
Wasn’t you...? Perhaps it was the
only other person who was working
          late that night?
                     MANNY
          Maybe.
Cody’s voice over the announcement system interrupts.
                    CODY(V.O.)
Dad, your wife would like a moment
          with you... Now!

                  (close)
You know, I can smell it on you.
And I will make you pay for what
             you have done.
                       MANNY
Aw, come on, boss. Don’t fire me,
             man. My girlfriend’s birthday’s
this week. She gonna go bananas if
she don’t get something this year.
                       ARBALD
Good. The two of you can work off
             your debt together.
                       MANNY
             But, I don’t think... she needs a
             job.
                       ARBALD
             That makes one of you.
He departs.
The guys fall out of line laughing at Manny.
                       WORKER#3
Don’t sweat it. I gotta cousin owns
a bike shop. He always lookin’ for
             a new janitor.
                       WORKER#2
And, my uncle works up in
Salinas... Tax free money, all day.
                       MANNY
He can’t fire me man, I helped
             build this place.
                       WORKER#2
You been here since day one?
                       MANNY
             Nah, worked on the construction
             crew... Long story. Some clown
stole a bobcat and they blamed me.
             You believe that?
                       WORKER#2/WORKER#3
Nah. Why would they think that?
Carter pulls into the lot.
                                                         49.

He exits the car, approaches Manny, pulls him with him.

EXT. STORAGE GARAGE - DAY
Carter presses a button on the wall and...
THE DOOR
Groans as it tracks upward.
CARTER
His face goes ashen when he sees the empty space.
He turns, and grabs Manny by the neck.
                     CARTER
This had better be a joke.
                (shakes him)
Tell me this is a joke on me and
everything is fine. That little car
           is somewhere hidden and you’re
about to pull the cover off and
drive it into this very garage,
           right now! Tell me that!
                     MANNY
                (slowly)
I’m about to go... Go and, get the
car because this is all a big joke.
                (smiles fiendishly)
Yeah, and I’ll be right back.
He hightails it away from the scene.

INT. SHOW ROOM - DAY
Carter ignores a couple of neatly dressed salesmen -- one a
sort of pretty blonde -- as he walks towards his office.
                     CODY(V.O.)
           Stop right there.
Carter freezes.
                     CODY(V.O.)
Where were you last Friday night?
                     CARTER
           With your mom.

                         CODY(V.O.)
             So was I.
Carter raises his hands as if to ask if he can proceed now.
                       CODY(V.O.)
Boss wants your ass in his office,
             stat.
Carter takes a deep breath.

INT. ARBALD’S OFFICE - DAY
Arbald is laying into Carter as he sits in a chair holding
his breath.
                       ARBALD
I trusted your judgment. I now see
that I was maybe too trusting.
                       CARTER
             Let me explain. I --
                       ARBALD
             Blew it? Sit down.
Carter exhales, looks down at his chair.
                       CARTER
             I am, sitting...
                       ARBALD
I like you. You know this? How long
             have our families been friends?
                       CARTER
             ... For years?
                       ARBALD
Precisely. Every Sunday I go to
             worship with your father. Your
             mother, that’s a different story,
             but we manage.
                       CARTER
             ... Beat of a different drummer ...
                       ARBALD
I think of you as my son. You are
welcome to all that I have. This is
             not a problem for me.
He begins to pace.

Everything except my wife, and my
             cars.
                   (stops momentarily)
Maybe my wife is not a good
             example.
                       CARTER
             Are you firing me?
                       ARBALD
You have until the end of the day
to bring my car to me. If not, I
             shall have no choice.
Carter, stunned, slowly rises, silently exits.
THE SHOWROOM
Seems larger than life as Carter walks to his office.

INT. CARTER’S OFFICE - DAY
Carter plops down in his chair and lifts a picture of Lacey
to the light.
                       CARTER
This is supposed to be a happy
             day...

                       WORKER#2
Where’d you get this? This shit
must cost 80 G’s... Look at those
             wheels!
                       ARBALD
             One hundred... G’s.
Everyone except Arbald pauses.
                       ARBALD
                  (tracing the car’s curves)
It’s everything they said it was.
This makes me happy. I can see me
now, on the freeway of love. Just
             me and my hot car!
                       MANNY
             Boss?
                        ARBALD
                   (snaps back)
Right. Put it away and get to work.
You think I’m paying you to not
             work?
                       MANNY
                  (relieved)
No, sir. You pay me for hard work,
             sir.
                       ARBALD
This color seems a little off.
Manny holds it in.
                        ARBALD
Damned dealers never get it right.
             Ah well...
He departs.
He passes by Carter on the way in. Stops...
                       ARBALD
             Your ass has been spared.
Continues.
Carter gives a confused look as he walks outside...

             You like, huh?
                       CARTER
                  (pawing the car)
I love. Where did you --
                       MANNY
A guy whose wife didn’t need to
know about it. Color’s a little
             off, but it works.
                       CARTER
This just saved my life. You’ve
gotta thank your cousin for me.
                       MANNY
You kidding? It was his wife...
Carter busts out laughing and he and Manny shake hands.
The sun casts a long shadow over the lot.
                       MANNY
You wanna pay me in cash or check?
’Cause I take it both ways...
                       CARTER
... Not sure I need to know that.
He departs.
                       MANNY
                  (calling out)
             Hey, I’m serious.

INT. TUXEDO SHOP - DAY
Carter and Cody try on different looks.
CARTER
Exits a stall wearing a white tux with a powder blue
cumberbun; Cody disapproves. Carter returns to the stall.
Carter exits again, this time he’s sporting a snazzy outfit
with pleats and ruffles -- a la Prince. Cody chucks a shoe
at him.
                                                      54.

INT. LIVING ROOM - NIGHT
Looking around inside the walls have received a fresh coat;
the posters are gone.
The big window looks out into the street.
                    CARTER
          You did all this?
                    CODY
          It’s hot, right?
                    CARTER
               (smacks him five)
          It’s the shiznit --
                    CODY
               (deadpan)
Dude, Snoop Dogg called. He said
it’s time to stop saying that, he
          kind of insisted.
                    CARTER
          You’re the best, man.
                    CODY
Can’t have my boy living in a shit
          hole, can I?
                    CARTER
               (tries to hug him)
          Cody...
                    CODY
          Dude, don’t go getting all
          sentimental like those people on
          TV.
                    CARTER
Aw... come on, Cody, you’re feelin’
it, too. Give it to me...
He spreads his arms wide and motions Cody nearer with his
hands. Cody reluctantly obeys.
                    CODY
I am so uncomfortable right now. Do
          you know this...?
THE FRONT DOOR

On the threshold are CAL and his son, the bike riding boy
from earlier.
Cal has a mean snarl on his grill and his boy has his hands
folded over his chest.
Cody and Carter whirl around, still hugging, smiling.
                       CAL
What are you two doing...? And with
             the door wide open?
He moves a few steps closer.
Carter and Cody first, step backwards, quickly break their
hug.
                       CODY
             We were just --
                       CARTER
             Celebrating.
                       CODY
             Congratulations...
Cal comes nearly nose to nose with Cody.
                       CAL
You been givin’ my boy a hard time
again. I don’t like nobody givin’
my boy a hard time. ’Specially not
             guys like, you.
                       CODY
                  (a forced smile)
             Happy?
                       CAL
             Games are for kids.
                       CARTER
             I think that’s Trix.
                       BIKER KID

Son, just let it ride... Let it go,
             son.
The biker kid shrugs his shoulders hard and smooths his
shirt. Points a finger at Carter.
Carter mocks a lunge at him.
                       CAL
             This neighborhood don’t need no
             flimsy flammy glamor boys livin’
right across the street from him.
You get where I’m goin’ with this?
                       CODY
                  (registering)
Dude! No fucking way. Me, and him?
             Dude you’re sick.
Cody steps back a pace or two.
                       CAL
Don’t lie to me, I got off work
             early for this.
Carter steps between the two odds.
                       CARTER
             We’re different, we’re talking
             about getting married --
Cal erupts.
                       CAL
             Son, get in here.
The biker kid’s size 7 shoe connects hard with Carter’s
manhood. He doubles over, groaning.
                       CAL
                  (turns to Cody)
             This one’s all mine...
Cody turns his back and cowers on the floor.
                       CODY
I never thought this would happen
             to me...
Cal reaches into his waistline and pulls out a...

The electrified prongs shoot out of the gun and lodge deep
in Cody’s back.
CODY
Shakes violently on his side as Cal and his son revel in
their mayhem.
                       CODY
             I am not gay....
                       CAL
Nope, right now I’d say you’re
             about thirty seconds away from
             total muscle failure.
CARTER’S HAND
Grabs the taser gun from Cal’s hand.
He stands there, chest heaving, wild-eyed.
                       CARTER
             ... Wait a minute, ok...? I’m...
getting married... To a girl. She’s
my girlfriend, and I love her.
Cal visibly softens up.
                       CAL
You guys aren’t movin’ in here to
do your nasty do across the street
             from me, then?
                       CARTER
             Never.
                       CAL
So, I got off early for nothing?
                       CARTER
             Apparently.
                       CAL
Oh, man, your momma’s gonna kill
me. Let’s get outta here before she
             comes home, son.
                       BIKER KID
             Dammit!
Cal and his son depart.
                                                      58.

Carter turns around and sees Cody’s spazzing body. He looks
down at the taser, he immediately drops it.

EXT. OUTDOOR RESTAURANT - DAY
A waitress goes between the tables.
Carter and Lacey are seated at a table near the sidewalk.
Lacey is admiring her ring.
                    LACEY
I’m so in love. It wasn’t even this
          big in my dreams.
She kisses Carter.
                    CARTER
So when do you wanna get married?
                    LACEY
Why rush? We’ve got the rest of our
          lives to decide.
                    CARTER
... I just thought that, you moving
here would sort of speed things up.
And we can’t live in mom’s basement
          forever, you know?
                    LACEY
Why not? Your mom is so great, I
          love her. Don’t you, too?
                    CARTER
          Love her like she’s family...
                    LACEY
See, that’s what I’m saying. Why
ruin a good thing. We’re perfect
          for each other.
                    CARTER
               (snuggles her hand)
          You’re right, babe. We’re the
          perfect little couple, why rush?
                    LACEY
She’s gonna teach me to be a
          massage therapist just like her.
Carter begins to speak but the waitress arriving cuts him
off.

             Tossed salad, and grilled salmon?
                       LACEY
                  (perky)
             That’s for me.
Carter loosens his grasp and sinks into his chair.

EXT. LONNIE’S HOUSE - NIGHT
Carter’s car pulls into the f.g. and parks in the driveway.
He gets out, tired, a bit wrinkled, his tie undone.
He mounts the front porch, checks the mailbox, bills. He
goes for the doorknob.

INT. LONNIE’S ROOM - NIGHT
A Celine Dion tune plays from an Ipod. The darkened ambience
only allows glimpses of what’s going on, but we hear
everything.
                       LACEY
... There, how does that feel?
                       LONNIE
             Amazing....

             Yah?

Yes... Oh! What was what one?

             That was your...

INT. LIVING ROOM - NIGHT
Carter drops the envelopes on the coffee table and walks
into the kitchen.
KITCHEN
He opens the fridge and fishes out a gallon jug of
milk. He opens the cabinet and grabs a
bowl. He grabs his favorite cereal
from the top of the fridge, sits, pours a bowl, digs in.

Lonnie lets out a moan that cascades down the hallway and
into the kitchen.
CARTER
Spoon in his mouth, milk dripping, freezes. A "not even"
look crosses his face, but he just shrugs it off and slurps
down another dripping spoonful.
ANOTHER MOAN
Interrupts his next bite and Carter slowly places the spoon
in his bowl and rises from his stool.
THE HALLWAY
He takes cautious but anxious steps towards the excitement.
                       CARTER
                  (to himself)
No way, dude. You’re, just tired,
             that’s all. I’m tired.
He stops short of the room and nearly turns around, but...
AN EVEN LOUDER MOAN AND GIGGLING
Draw him back in.
                       CARTER
This is crazy, dude. She’s your
mom. No way she’d snake your
             girlfriend...
                  (a moment of clarity)
... She is -- Mom! Lacey? Ha, you
hoo, guys. Come on out... I’m
             home...
THE BEDROOM
Lonnie stops, but Lacey keeps going. She grabs her and makes
her stop.
                       LONNIE
             Did you lock the door?
                       LACEY
Of course I did. Right after I --
                       LONNIE
Lonnie springs from the bed and...

Slowly pushes open and Carter stands there, bug eyed, gap
mouthed, not knowing whether to turn away or be irate. He
turns his back, but stays.
Lonnie grabs the covers from the bed exposing Lacey.
                       CARTER
                  (eerily calm)
Is that a new game that I don’t
know about? Please tell me you’re
planning on marketing what I just
             saw. A beat. Please...
                       LONNIE
             Close the door!
Carter steps backwards into the room and shuts the door.
                       LONNIE
Close it from the other side, and,
             get out!
CARTER
Flumoxed, grabs scratches at the doorknob a few times before
he gets a grip and bolts.
He stands on the other side of the door, near tears, looking
for answers he already has.
                       CARTER
             Lacey, baby...? You guys almost
done in there? Cuz, I can come --
                       LONNIE
             Carter, dear. Stay right there.
Mommy’s gonna be right out to talk
             to you, ok?
CARTER
Appears shell shocked as he robotically turns and walks
away. As he does he mutters something unintelligible.
BEDROOM
Lacey sits on the bed covering herself as Lonnie frantically
pulls on the first thing she grabs.
                       LONNIE
Oh shit. Oh fuck. Not him too.

                       LACEY
So, you’ve done this sort of thing
             before?
                       LONNIE
No. Yes, oh shit. Just, do
something to help here, will ya?
                        LACEY
             Like...?
                       LONNIE
Get off your ass and help me
explain to my only son why he just
had the very distinct pleasure of
not only seeing his mother nude,
but nude and in bed with his
fiancee would be just peachy to
             start.
                       LACEY
Oh, ok? I can do that.
                       LONNIE
You’re not all disturbed by this,
             are you?
                        LACEY
Disturbed? What for? It was fun
             wasn’t it?
                       LONNIE
             It was... certainly something.
She tosses a robe to her.
                       LONNIE
Put this on and come on.
Lonnie exits. Lacey giggles.
THE KITCHEN
Carter has returned to his soggy bowl of cereal.
Lonnie approaches him cautiously.
                       LONNIE
             Dear? Are you ok?
Carter looks up from his bowl and eyeballs her.

                       CARTER
With seeing my mother butt naked in
a dark room with his equally naked
             girlfriend? Sure... Why not?
                       LONNIE
                  (steps around the island)
             Somebody’s a little grumpy.
                       CARTER
Well, it’s not everyday that you
see your mom and your girlfriend
gettin’ freak nasty in a dark room.
                  (head down)
I grew up in that room.
                       LONNIE
Is that what you’re calling it
             these days?
                       CARTER
Why, mom? Why my girl? You know how
             much she means to me.
                        LONNIE
It’s not that easy to explain,
             Carter.
                  (shifts her weight to one
                  foot)
Believe me, if it were this country
wouldn’t have its head so far up
             its ass.
                       CARTER
You can’t just snake the girl I’m
going to marry, mom. That’s not the
             way it works...
                  (stands)
... See, I, the son, get the girl
and you, the mom, tell me how
pretty and nice she is. You, don’t
go behind my back and start a
             sexual relationship with her, mom!
                       LONNIE
I must be doing something for her
             that you’re not.
                       CARTER
                  (incredulous)
How could I? You pounced on her as
             soon as she got here.

Oh, now it’s my fault that you left
her here all alone? She was lonely.
So we got a little close, no crime
             in two like-minded women indulging
             a common interest is there?
                       CARTER
                  (exasperated)
Yes, there is, and it’s called
             because it’s gross!
                  (throws his hands up)
I’ve gotta get out outta here
             before I go nuts.
Lacey enters the kitchen from the hallway.
She tries to wrap her arms around Carter. He rebuffs her and
exits the door, slamming it behind him.
                       LACEY
             What’s wrong with him?
                       LONNIE
                  (an exasperated look)
             Is something wrong with you?
                       LACEY
                  (as a matter of fact)
             No, I’m fine.
Lonnie takes off behind Carter.
THE BACKYARD
                       LACEY
Wait up will you? We need to talk
             about this.
                        CARTER
                  (fires back)
Talk about what? How you moved to
San Diego and immediately jumped in
             the sack with my mother?
                  (stops abruptly)
You know, actually, I’d like to
hear this. Come on, give me your
             best shot.
                       LACEY
I didn’t mean for it to happen this
way. It just... kind of did happen
             this way.

Oh, ok, that explains everything. I
don’t know what I’m upset about.
Things just, happen all the time,
             right?
                       LACEY
             Right.
                       CARTER
             Wrong! And this...
                  (points towards the house)
... This is not happening to me.
He storms off.
                       LACEY
             What, where are you going?
                       CARTER
                  (over his shoulder)
Somewhere I should have been a long
             time ago. Goodbye!
Lonnie comes out and she and Lacey just stand there,
looking...

INT. CARTER’S OFFICE - DAY
A disheveled looking Carter, his head resting on his hand,
eyes closed, in front of a black monitor, wearing
yesterday’s clothes.
The office phone rings, waking Carter with a start.
He fumbles with the phone before answering it.
                       CARTER
Good morning, So Cal’s finest --
                       CODY(V.O.)
Man, you look like pure hell, on a
             bad day.
                       CARTER
             Hello?
Cody appears in the doorway.
                       CODY
And you reek, god, man, did you
             even attempt to shower?

You mean you can’t still see the
             rust in my hair?
                       CODY
I was just about to talk to you
             about that... Plumbings not fully
             functional yet, dude.
                       CARTER
Neither is your brain. How do you
expect me to live without hot
             water?
                       CODY
Remember the time we went up to
Yosemite and all we had was the
             cold mountain stream and beer?
                       CARTER
I never made it, remember? You gave
my seat to your girlfriend. You
know, the one who’s now banned from
             ever entering the country?
                       CODY
Did I do that? Hmmph, my point is
you got two more days before the
             plumbers get there.
                       CARTER
                  (defeated)
Anything else, or can I jump now?
                       CODY
Dude, are you ok? Last time you
             talked like this was after...
Cody pauses and looks at his friend closer.
                       CODY
             She didn’t? Did she?
                       CARTER
I don’t have time right now.
                       CODY
             Hey, I deserve to know.
                       CARTER
Why do you, deserve to know?

Three reasons. A, you’re my best
             friend.
                       CARTER
             Your only friend.
                       CODY
B, you owe me for that house. And,
three, you don’t have anyone else
             to talk to.
                       CARTER
                  (a moment of clarity)
             Good stuff...
                       CODY
                  (a greedy smile)
So, tell me, dude. Who is he, some
porn stud with a heavy drug problem
and a dong so big --
                       CARTER
             My mom.
                       CODY
                  (the smile fades)
Your mom what? Who’s she doin’,
             bro?
                        CARTER
                  (stands)
My mom. I found out last night,
that’s why I stayed the night at
             the house.
                       CODY
Wow, uh, for the first time in my
             life I am totally disturbed.
                  (contemplates, his body
                  quivers)
             ... Eww ...
                       CARTER
Listen, I wanna keep this low key
as possible. So, don’t tell the
             guys, and definitely don’t tell
             your dad about this.
                       CODY
You have my word. My lips are
             tombs.

             Sealed?
                       CODY
             Not a word.

EXT. CAR LOT - DAY
Manny and the other workers, some on the ground, point and
laugh at Crater as he walks between them.
                        MANNY
Hey, my mom did the same thing to
             me...
                   (breaks down)
... Nah, no she didn’t, she loves
             me too much.
                       WORKER#2
It’s ok, I saw this on a Dr. Phil
             episode once.
                       WORKER#3
             You hate that show.
                       WORKER#2
             I know. I lied.
More laughter.
Carter hides his face as he briskly crosses the show room
floor to his office.
A nice looking female worker steps in front of Carter,
smiles, shakes her head, pats him on the shoulder, walks on.
                        CARTER
             Cody...!
Cody’s door bangs shut.
Carter pounds the door with his fists. He can see Cody
through the window.
                       CARTER
             You promised...
                       CODY
Sorry, dude, I’m busy. Come back
             tomorrow.
                                                       69.

INT. BEDROOM - NIGHT
Carter stuffs some belongings into a suitcase. A picture on
the night stand catches his eye and he stops.
INSERT: FAMILY PICTURE
Carter, Marcos and Lonnie enjoying a family vacation many
years earlier.
CARTER
Sits on the bed holding the picture, quietly reminiscing, if
not longing for a return to those youthful days.
LONNIE’S HAND
Softly touches Carter’s shoulder. He looks up, tears well in
his eyes. He stands and hugs his mother. They hold there for
a few seconds then...
Carter sets the picture back on the table, zips his
suitcase, departs. Leaving Lonnie there in the room.

EXT. MARCOS’ HOUSE - DAY
Carter glumly walks up to the front door and knocks a few
times; he knocks again.
MARCOS
Opens the door and stands there with a ’not now’ look on his
face.
CARTER
Begins to plead his case, but ultimately drops his head and
slowly walks away.
At the bottom of the steps he suddenly whips around begins
to shout at the top of his lungs.
                    CARTER
I haven’t showered in two days...

INT. GINA’S HOUSE - NIGHT
Carter towels his hair off in front of the bathroom mirror.
Steam fills the air. Gina appears behind him and runs her
fingers through his hair.

Haven’t seen that in a while.
                       CARTER
                  (covers himself)
Sorry, I’m not used to someone else
             being there.
                       GINA
Stop it, not that, silly. I just
             meant it’s been a...
                  (near)
             ... really long time since...
                  (lips this close)
... I had a man in here. This is
             nice... right...?
                          CARTER
             And hot...
                       GINA
Makes me think about all those
times we cut church to come here
             and practice our own religion.
She trails kisses down his neck.
                       CARTER
                  (a slow smile)
Yeah, this does feel kinda nice...
                  (getting into it)
             And you still feel --
                       GINA
Like a summer’s eve in heaven...?
                       CARTER
             Even better...
The two of them kiss passionately and claw at one another
all the way to the bedroom.
Carter lifts Gina onto the bed and straddles her.
                       CARTER
                  (between kisses)
This is what I’ve been missing.
                       GINA
How long has it been for you?

             How long?
                       CARTER
             Not long now.
Gina pushes Carter off and draws the covers over her body.
Carter makes a grab for the covers but...
Gina kicks him onto the floor.
                       CARTER(O.S.)
             You’ve changed.
                       GINA
I love you. But all you want from
             me is my body.
                       CARTER
                  (picking himself up)
The other day you were all over me,
             and now this?
                       GINA
Grow up eventually and begin to
take life seriously. We all do it
             one day. It’s kinda necessary.
                       CARTER
Me? You don’t even have a job, your
dad bought you this house for high
school graduation. All you do is...
             nothing.
                       GINA
I shop, and that takes seriousness.
                       CARTER
Look, I didn’t come here to fight
with you. I’ll go sleep on the
             couch. Goodnight.
                         GINA
             Hey.
                         CARTER
             What?
Gina uncovers herself and smiles seductively.

... But, it’s way in there,
             and, I’m so close ...
Carter’s body language and countenance change. He scurries
over to the bed, dives in, pulls Gina under the covers.

INT. GINA’S HOUSE - DAY
Carter smacks Gina on the lips and heads out of the door to
work.

EXT. CAR LOT - DAY
The group of workers are variously carrying on their day’s
work.
Carter pulls into the lot, jumps out, his head’s in the
clouds. There’s something different about him, he has a
little more pep in his step, his sail’s full.

             Guys. Hey, how’s your girlfriend?
Oh, yeah that’s right, I should ask
             your mom.
The other guys laugh and lob a few jokes at Carter.
                       CARTER
                  (without stopping)
I think you missed a spot.
                       WORKER#3
She’s probably tied up right now.
                       CARTER
Don’t forget to check the tires,
             they look a little flat.
He enters the show room. The female salesperson from earlier
attempts to say something. Ain’t no stoppin’ him now.
CODY
Is on talking on his desk phone when he spots Carter. He
exits the office and keeps stride with him.
                       CODY
Dude, you won’t believe what I’ve
             got planned for your bachelor
             party. We’re going to --
                       CARTER
             I’m not getting married?
                       CODY
Whadda you mean? I just spent a
             small fortune on the
             entertainment... You have to get
             married.
                  (grabs Carter’s arm)
             Wait, stop! Why not?
                       CARTER
             She’s dating my mom.
                       CODY
She’s dating your mom... Don’t give
me that shit, dude. You’re bein’ a
bitch and I’m not lettin’ it
             happen.
Carter turns to Cody, places his hands on his shoulders,
looks him in the eyes.

Let it go. They’re probably at home
doing god knows what at this very
             moment.
                  (to himself)
             And I can’t believe I just said
             that, but it’s true.
                       CODY
                  (throws his hands off)
Then why the fuck are you so happy,
dude? You should be drunk sitting
in your shower crying your eyes
             out.
                        CARTER
             Because.
He turns and walks away.
                       CODY
That’s not an answer, you know?

INT. GINA’S BED - NIGHT
Carter and Gina are kissing, touching and saying cute things
that don’t matter anyway when...
THE DOORBELL RINGS
Gina pulls herself away to answer.

                       CARTER
             I miss you already.
THE DOOR
Gina peers out of the peep hole.
On the other side is DAN, Gina’s buff boyfriend. A green sea
bag in his hand.
Gina instantly becomes an emotional wreck. She hurries back
into the bedroom in a nervous frenzy.
Dan is now pounding on the door outside.
                       CARTER
What’s the matter? Who was it?
                       GINA
                  (a nervous smile)
             Oh, nobody important. Just Dan.
                       CARTER
             Oh.
(tries to pull her into bed)
Did you tell him you didn’t want
             any?
                       GINA
             Not exactly.
Dan bangs on the window.
Gina nearly loses her shit; Carter too.
                       GINA
             Get out of here.
                       CARTER
             Shit. What does he want?
                       DAN
Gina? Are you in there, honey? It’s
             me, your sailor boy.
                       GINA

                       CARTER

He snatches his clothes from the floor.
                       GINA
Yeah, he’s been gone for six
             months. So I’m sure he’s --
                       CARTER
Enough. You, I can’t believe this,
             Gina. Twice?
                       GINA
             A girl gets lonely.
Gina grabs Carter and kisses him one more time.
                       GINA
It was fun while it lasted. Now,
             get out!
                  (at the window)
Babe...? Why don’t you go around to
the front door... I can’t wait to
             see you.

Where am I supposed to go?
Gina looks towards the window.
CARTER
Pulls his pants on, his shirt, his shoes.
                       CARTER
             Some things never change around
             here.
                       GINA
I’m sorry. I’ll make it up to you
             one day.
                        CARTER
             Save it.
He throws the window up, looks back at Gina, climbs out. He
hits the ground with a thud.
THE DOOR
Opens slowly and Gina, wearing a sexy piece of lingerie and
a smile, bats her eyes and welcomes Dan in.

INT. BATHROOM - DAY
Lacey shuts the door, as she talks on her cell phone.
LONNIE
Calls out to her.
She checks the massage room.
She searches the bedroom.
She walks by the closed door, hears the conversation, back
tracks, nearly knocks, but she doesn’t.
She listens.
                       LACEY
Yeah, oh yeah, all the way.
                  (pause)
             I know...
                  (giggles)
This is better than the two in
             Phoenix.

Oh, I know, baby, I miss you so

             on the beach.
                  (pause)
I love you, too. Gotta go, the old
lady’s probably having a fit by

LONNIE
Can’t believe her ears.
LACEY
Is startled when she opens the door to find Lonnie standing
there, hands on her hips.
                       LONNIE
             Who ya talkin’ to?
                       LACEY

                  (fumbling for words)
Pep talk, I do that sometimes.
                       LONNIE
That’s odd, because it sounded like
you were having a conversation with
             someone.
                       LACEY
What -- no, not even. Voice message
-- from my mother, real worrier
there, but I really love her. Ready
             to go?
                       LONNIE

                       LACEY
Well, you’re the one who’s goin’

I heard you. Did you really think

actually going to -- let you do
             this?
                       LACEY
What are you talking about? We’re

Backs away.
                       LONNIE

             I didn’t want --
                       LONNIE
                  (pulls away)
             Didn’t want what? A relationship?
                       LACEY
To hurt you. Or your son. I’m not
             even a lesbian.
Lonnie loses it and attacks.
She grabs her by her hair and pulls out a big clump of
extensions. Lacey
covers her head with her hands.
                       LONNIE
                  (drops the hair)
             Say goodbye... Bitch.
Lacey tries to dodge Lonnie around the island. Lonnie grabs
her from behind and pulls her back.
                       LACEY
             Can’t we talk about this...?
                       LONNIE
Sure we can. Right after I --
                  (slap)
Get what I get what I paid for.
She rips the shirt from Lacey’s back exposing her lacy bra.

                  (drops the shirt)
             Sorry.
Lacey pleads more.
Lonnie literally drags Lacey to the back door, shoves her
into it.
                       LONNIE
             My fault again.
                          LACEY
             That hurt.
                        LONNIE
Good. A little pain is nice
             sometimes.
Lonnie’s bare foot kicks Lacey out of the door.
LACEY
Sprawled on the ground.
LONNIE
Leers at her, turns her back, slams the door. Wipes her
hands.
LACEY
Gathers herself, and with her last shred of dignity struts
away.
LONNIE
Dials on her cell phone. Waits.
INTERCUT

Carter drives along the coast, lost in thought.
                       LONNIE
             Answer... Come on, dear, answer.
Carter answers...
Carter slowly closes his phone.
                                                        81.

INT. CONFESSIONAL - DAY
Carter sits semi-patiently in the high backed leather chair.
He fiddles with his hands before deciding to cross his arms.
THE CHURCH
Empty right now, silent. An imposing sculpture of the Virgin
Mother stands next to the altar.
Marcos enters from the back of the room. He steps inside,
exalts to the heavens and smiles as if he’s drinking in the
spirit of the church.
His cell phone rings piercing the peaceful silence of the
sanctuary. He answers.
                       MARCOS
Hola. Habla con Marcos. Quien es?
                       MARCOS
See, I told you. Once you get a
             taste you’re hooked for life.
Carter’s voice comes from Off Screen.
                       CARTER(O.S.)
             Dad? Are you seriously macking
             right here right now?
Marcos, surprised, whips around with a wide-eyed look on his
grill.
                       MARCOS
                  (clutches his heart then
stoops over and puts his hands
                  on his knees)
             You. You...
                  (wags a finger)
... Where did you come from?
                       CARTER
                  (points over his shoulder)
In there, I was waiting on you...
             Dad, are you alright?
                       MARCOS
I’m fine, don’t worry about your
             old man.
                  (thumps his chest)
             There, fit as a fiddle.
He coughs and wheezes violently.

                       CARTER
             Ya sure about that?
                       MARCOS
So, you are here to seek guidance.
                  (points to the confessional)
             Please, step inside, my son.
                       CARTER
Wha -- Dad wait. Can’t we just talk
like father and son, you know? Like
             we used to do.
                       MARCOS
                  (grabs Carter’s shoulders
looks him in the eye, spins
                  him around)
             No. Now get in there.
Marcos’s cell phone buzzes again.
                       MARCOS
Carida, mi amor, I apologize. It
was not me it was my...
                  (shields his mouth, lowers his
                  voice)
My idiot son. I think he’s going to
             tell me something important. Give
             me a minute, ok?
                       CARTER(O.S.)
             Dad, now...?
                       MARCOS
             Chao.
He hangs up.
CONFESSIONAL
Marcos slides back into his chair. Fixes his collar, his
hair in the mirror on the wall. Sprays Banaca. Crosses his
legs, places his hands on his lap, sits back.
                       MARCOS
So, let’s begin. Why are you here,
             my son?
                       CARTER
             Well, it’s Mom.

CONTINUED: 83.

                       MARCOS
Not a surprise so far. Go on.
                       CARTER
And it’s Lacey. It’s Mom and Lacey
             together, they’re together. I mean
I saw them together and there was
this huge mess and Mom screamed...
                       MARCOS
                  (smirks)
             Yes... She always does.
                       CARTER
I mean this is just not supposed to
happen to me. She’s my fucking
mother -- Oh, I am so sorry father.
                       MARCOS
             That one is on me.
                       CARTER
Thanks. So, dad, what in the hell
am I supposed to do? My hot new
girlfriend and my 40 something year
old mother are... Going there! And
             I’m disgusted.
                       MARCOS
                  (leans forward, presses his
                  face to the screen)
So you say your Lacey is havinga
sex with your mother? My wife?
                       CARTER
Yes -- Hey wait, I thought you guys
             were divorced.
                       MARCOS
                  (quickly)
             We never finalized the paperwork,
             it’s a long twisted story you don’t
             wanna hear about it.
                       CARTER
             Ok... Gross...
KATHERINE’S Voice comes from Off Screen.
                       KATHERINE(O.S.)
             Marcos... Marky... You hoo... It’s
ok, papi. Your mamacita is here for
             her... appointment.

                        MARCOS
                  (hears her)
             Oh, Jesus.
                       CARTER
             Yeah, you’re tellin’ me.
                       MARCOS
                  (walks to the door)
             No... Continue, my son.
Just as Marcos cracks the door Katherine appears on the
other side. She instantly is drapes herself all over Marcos.
He tries to resist before giving in to his growing
excitement. He pulls her inside and shushes her lips with
one finger.
                       CARTER
             ... And I was devastated. I thought
she was really the one, you know,
dad. Thought she was that special
girl every little boy dreams he’ll
marry when he grows up... Guess I
was reading too many fantasies, huh
             dad?
Marcos and Katherine are going at it hot and heavy.
                       MARCOS
                  (through kisses)
             You’re absolutely right, hijo. She
             deserves better... Ay... That feels
             great... Right there.
                       CARTER
Dad? What’s going on over there?
Carter attempts to look through the screen. Marcos bangs it
shut in his face.
                       MARCOS
Do not worry about your father,
hijo. You just let me take care of
this one. I’ll be just a minute...
                  (takes an eyeful of Katherine)
             ... Maybe two.
                                                         85.

EXT. OCEAN SIDE - DAY
Carter sits looking out at the Pacific. A subtle wind blows
through his hair.
Lonnie pulls up in her car.
She approaches Carter from behind, gently touches his
shoulder. Carter turns to face her, his eyes brimming.
Lonnie silently comforts him. The sun slowly sets in the
b.g.

INT. BAR - NIGHT
Marcos, Carter and KATHERINE are seated at a small round
table. Drinks are around.
                    MARCOS
A real woman is what you need,
hijo. A woman who will cherish you.
Someone who will attend to your
          every...
               (grabs Katherine’s hand;
               kisses it)
          ... need.
                    CARTER
I thought it was true love.
                    MARCOS
Love, is not in the mind. Sure,
there are times when you can’t stop
thinking about her, but love, love
          is not that simple.
                    KATHERINE
               (interjecting)
          Sweetheart, what your father’s
trying to say to you is that love
is not something that you just wake
up one day and have. It takes time
to build. You have to nurture it.
You get back just as much as you
put in, sometimes more if you’re
          really lucky.
                    CARTER
So, how will I know when it’s love
I feel and I’m not just fooling
          myself again?
Marcos begins to speak, but Katherine cuts him off.

CONTINUED: 86.

                       KATHERINE
It’s when your heart skips a beat
every time she enters the room,
             when your... day’s not complete
             without seeing her. When you
suddenly realize one day that all
the things you told your friends
you’d never do become the things
you can’t wait to do for her. Then
             you will know.
                       MARCOS
                  (beaming)
Listen to her, she speaks the
             truth, hijo.
                       CARTER
Dad, have the things you said you’d
             never do --
                       KATHERINE
             Your father’s a different case.
He’s, well... You know your father.
Marcos and Katherine share a kiss.
                       KATHERINE
And I don’t want him any other way.
                       CARTER
... But, what about true love?
Don’t you ever want to fall in love
             and get married someday?
                       KATHERINE
                  (flashes a wedding ring)
             Married, twenty five years. My
husband left me for another man a
year later. Said it’s kill his
mother if she knew so, we never got
             divorced. Separate lives, separate
             houses. It works for us.
                       MARCOS
                  (wistful)
... He was my best man...
                       CARTER
             In your wedding?
                       MARCOS
For godssake, no. He was the deacon
of my church. Sure, you remember
             Pastor Bradford, right?

                                                   (CONTINUED)

                       CARTER
             Wow.
                       KATHERINE
Sweetheart, the truth is you never
can tell just when and where love
will find you. You just have to be
             ready when it does.
                       CARTER
                  (hoists his beer)
             To love.
They clank bottles.

INT. SHOW ROOM - DAY
Couples, young and old, well dressed and in shorts
and skirts variously sit in, touch, smile at, question
salespeople about the cars.
CARTER
Shows a mature looking couple a sedan.
                       CARTER
This one has all of the newest
             features: heated seats, GPS, road
             side assistance. It’s our top
             seller this year.
                       MAN
It’s a beauty, what do you think,
             honey?
                       WOMAN
                  (warmly)
             I think I love it.
                       MAN
                  (hugs her)
How can I say no to that face? I
             think we’re sold.
Carter and the man shake hands.
                        CARTER
Great. I’ll be right back with the
             paperwork.
As he’s walking away the female salesperson from earlier
steps in his path.

             Sold another one, huh?
                       CARTER
             All in a day’s work.
                       FEMALE
Well, I’ve been here for two months
and I haven’t sold one yet.
                       CARTER
             Is there something you wanted...?
Or, am I your new best friend?
                       FEMALE
                  (down)
I guess I just suck at life.
                       CARTER
Hey, no. Listen, if you want I’ll
show you some pointers after work.
                       FEMALE
Really...? You won’t mind the fact
that I’m a nervous wreck? Or that I
can barely look at myself in the
mirror? Or that I get all tongue
tied when I someone asks me about a
             car?
                       CARTER
Are you kidding? When I started
here I was a wreck, too.
                       FEMALE
             You’re just saying that.
                       CARTER
No, I mean it, two peas in a pod --
             Except for the mirror part...
                       FEMALE
                  (happy)
             Awesome!
                  (hugs him)
             I love you...
He bristles.
                       FEMALE
                  (lets go)
Sorry, sometimes I get a little
             carried away.

Yeah... By the way, what’s your
             name?
                       MEGAN
                  (points to her chest)
             Megan.
                       CARTER
             Right. Guess I should’ve seen
that... It was there all along...
                       MEGAN
             Yep, two months now...
Carter pauses for a beat, smiles, then heads on for the
paperwork.
Megan does a happy little jig.

INT. SHOW ROOM - NIGHT
Carter pretends to be a prospective customer.
                       CARTER
                  (a mock hick accent)
I wanna see something fast, and
             furious. Whaddaya got for me?
                       MEGAN
                  (lights up)
Over here we have our top of the
line sport coupe. It’s fast, 350
hp, run flat tires, so, no flats
             when you’re out there...
                  (gesticulates)
... revvin’ up the old horses.
                       CARTER
Well, I need something for my kids,
too. Got anything in a wagon?
                       MEGAN
I think I have the perfect vehicle
             for you.
She shows him a polished new SUV.
                       MEGAN
Not quite a wagon, but it holds six
             without a problem. Besides, station
             wagons are ugly anyway.

                       CARTER
             You’re a natural. So, what’s your
story? I mean, why the sob story
about how crumby you are at this?
                       MEGAN
If I had told you that I was the
top seller at my last job in
Wisconsin and that the only reason
I’m here is because my dad’s job
             got moved you probably wouldn’t
have given me the time of day.
             Right?
                       CARTER
             That’s not true, I --
Megan closes the gap between them.
                       MEGAN
Is that right? Well for the past
             two months I’ve been practically
throwing myself at you and you
             barely even noticed me...
A little closer still...
                       CARTER
... Busy, busy with... Lots of...
             stuff.
                        MEGAN
             Like...?
                       CARTER
Stuff like... Then there was the --
Megan zeroes in and plants a lip lock on him.
                        CARTER
             Kiss...
                       MEGAN
             I thought so.
Carter gets more into it and their kissing grows more
passionate.
                                                         91.

EXT. CAR LOT - NIGHT
Arbald’s original car careens into the lot barely missing
side-swiping the neat rows of cars.

INT. SHOW ROOM - NIGHT
The car fishtails one last time before it...
CRASHES
Through the towering windows and into the show room
showering the floor with millions of shards of glass.
Carter and Megan react.
The car screeches to a stop leaving tracks on the tile
floor.
MARI
Peeks out of the driver’s window as Carter and Megan come to
inspect the damage.

EXT. CAR LOT- NIGHT
POLICE move in and out. An ambulance’s siren whines as it
arrives.
Arbald, Cody and Manny are there now, too.
Two EMT’s wheel Mari away as an OFFICER questions her.
Carter and Megan stand side-by-side and embrace in the
chilly night air.
Arbald walks calmly from inside the wrecked opening and
stops at Carter.
                    ARBALD
          You’re fired.
Manny, standing a few feet away begins to gloat.
                    ARBALD
          You will pay.
Manny’s good time quickly turns sour.
Arbald walks past the group towards his car.

             Yeah --

                   (over his shoulder)
Perhaps you would enjoy a similar
             fate?
                       CODY
... Right behind you, big guy.
He wags a finger at Carter and Manny. Manny lunges for him.
Cody bails.
                       CARTER
             That’s it. I give up, my life’s
             done. Somebody shoot me now.
                       MEGAN
You’ve still got me. That is, if
             you want me...
                       MANNY
                  (lasciviously)

                       MEGAN
                  (a look of disgust)
Tell me something I can’t see for
             myself. Ugh.
The questioning officer approaches the group.
                       OFFICER
Now, which one of you is...
                  (reading from a paper)
... El mas estupido del mundo...?
                       CARTER AND MEGAN
                  (point)
             He is.
                       OFFICER
Ok then, we’ll start with you.
                       MANNY
                  (agitated)
Oh, great, yeah, blame it on me,
             huh? I’m the bad guy.

Sir, if you don’t calm down I’m

             to restrain you.
                       MANNY
             I’m calm, alright?
The ambulance’s siren rings out as it speeds away.
SUPER: "ONE WEEK LATER"

EXT. LONNIE’S HOUSE - NIGHT
Cars line the curb and fill the driveway.
A FEW PEOPLE sit around a stand up heater in the backyard.
The hanging banner reads: "HAPPY BIRTHDAY CARTER".

INT. KITCHEN - NIGHT
More PARTYERS are sipping beers and from red SOLO cups.
Music blasts from a stereo that we don’t see.
In the living room Cody, wearing a t-shirt emblazoned with
"LET’S DO THIS" and his mother, ARINEH, whose dress can only
be described as over-the-top, are seated on the couch.
Arbald and Marcos are in one corner engaged in a deep
conversation about something. Even more FRIENDS are present
as well.
CARTER
Is in his room in the basement; bare, except for the
pictures he’s reminiscing on. He chuckles at seeing some
long forgotten ones, cringes at others. He doesn’t hear...
LONNIE
When she enters the room and stands watching his trip down
memory lane.
He flips through a few more pages and smiles quietly; closes
the book, sets it on the nightstand.
                       LONNIE
That always was my favorite book.
Carter turns around to her, a bit surprised.

How long have you been standing
             there?
                       LONNIE
                  (smiles)
Long enough. Just came to check on
             you. You comin’ up soon?
                       CARTER
             Yeah... Right behind you.
Lonnie departs.
Carter turns back to the nightstand and picks up the
picture. He looks at it for a long second and replaces it.

INT. KITCHEN - NIGHT
Carter emerges from the basement door and his friends greet
him with happy birthday wishes.
He shakes a few hands, hugs the girls and enters the living
room.
                       MARCOS
There he is, mi hijo. Come, give
             your father a hug.
                       CARTER
             Dad I’m 25 now.
                       MARCOS
             Come...
Carter walks over and goes to hug him, but Marcos plants a
big wet one square on his lips. Carter pulls away.
                       CARTER
                  (wipes his lips with his
                  sleeve)
             Aw, man, dad.
The others sort of snicker and laugh.
                       ARINEH
I have not gotten that much
             affection from your father in
             years.

                       ARINEH
Well... If you don’t like I’m sure
there are others who would love to
             have --
                          CODY
             Whoa! Mom?
                       ARINEH
             He starts, I finish.
                       ARBALD
Lately, you have not waited for the
             gun.
                          CARTER
             Ok...
He exits to the kitchen, grabs two beers and exits into the
backyard.
GINA
Bumps into him just as he exits the door.
                       CARTER
What are you doing here? No, lemme
guess. Dan got called away to save
             the planet from terror?
                       GINA
Nah, he’s just jealous so he stayed
home. I told him you and I we were
             nearly married and you’re still

And he let you come anyway?

             military guy, they’re not trained
             to ask questions...
                       CARTER
... Right, well help yourself to
             anything you want.

             Anything, I want...?
                       CARTER
             Not, that anything.
Just then Megan walks up to them and puts an arm around
Carter’s waist.
                       MEGAN
             Hey you.
                  (kisses him)
             I missed you.
Gina looks appalled.
                       CARTER
             I missed you too, babe.
He hands her the other beer.
                       MEGAN
                  (sticks her hand out)
             Hi, I’m Megan.
Gina ices her, rolls her eyes, stalks off.
                       MEGAN
Nice to meet you too, bitch.
                       CARTER

They walk towards the seated group of guests.

INT. BATHROOM - NIGHT

Lonnie is wearing low rise jeans and a revealing shirt that

             Unfortunately, yes. Very well.
Lonnie finishes up and tries to squeeze by.
She brushes Marcos and there’s an uneasy silence as they

                          MARCOS
             Excuse me.
                       LONNIE

They seem to be drawing closer.

                  (points behind her)

             me out there.
She blushes and quickly departs.
Marcos look at himself in the mirror and gloats.

You are one dead sexy man.
He shuts the door and the sound of splashing water is heard.

EXT. BACKYARD - NIGHT
Guests are in every place; tucked away at in dark corners of
the yard, sharing lively conversations at small tables,
standing and basically enjoying the atmosphere.
Lonnie steps into the middle of the fray, a large box in
hand, she brings everyone’s attention to her.
                       LONNIE
             Everyone. Everyone right here.
The party turns to her.
Carter pipes up and says...
                       CARTER
             Oh no, mom. I’m 25, not 15...
                       LONNIE
I know my dear, but you’ll always
             be my little boy.
Marcos appears from behind Lonnie.
                       MARCOS
             And mine as well.
                  (motions Carter over)
             Ven aqui, mi hijo.
Carter brings Megan with him.
                       CARTER

             embarrassed enough already.
                       LONNIE
Now, now. It’s not every day that a
mother’s little boy becomes a man.
She pushes the box towards Carter. A din of "Open it, Open
it" comes from the guests.
Carter thrusts the box into the air and rips it open.

ARBALD
Walks up to the two and stops, looks, pushes Cody aside.

Where is it? What color is it,
             black?
                       ARBALD
No. It’s white and it has one
             window in it.
                       CARTER AND CODY
             One window...?
                       ARBALD
... And a desk. And I expect to see
             you behind it Monday morning.
                       CARTER
What? So, it’s not a car...?
                       ARBALD
                  (squeezes Carter’s cheeks with
                  one hand)
             You owe me. Happy birthday.
He departs.
Lonnie, Marcos, Cody and Megan crowd around Carter as the
music cranks back up.
                                                   DISSOLVE TO:
                                                     101.

INT. BED - DAY
Two lumps poke up underneath the covers.

INT. LONNIE’S ROOM - DAY
The sun shines in through a window at the side of the bed.
Lonnie rolls over and sort of yawns. She feels the lump next
to her and pulls the covers back.
MARCOS
Rolls over toward Lonnie with a huge grin on his grill and
kisses her on the lips.
                    MARCOS
Ah ... Hola, my dear. Some fiesta
last night ... You still know how
          to party ...
He rolls back over and Lonnie just sits there in the middle
of the bed, unmoving, not saying a word.

EXT. A DOOR - DAY
TWO BURLY GUYS pound on the door.
                    GUYS# 1
Come on, buddy. Come on will ya ...
The door slowly draws open to reveal Carter standing there
in a pair of boxers, hair a mess, his eyes red and puffy.
                    CARTER
Can I help you guys wit something?
                    BOTH GUYS
          Yeah, get out. Now.
Guy# 2 tacks a yellow piece of paper on the door and walks
past Carter inside. Guy# 1 follows.
                    CARTER
What are you guys doing? Wait,
          that’s my couch --
                    GUY# 2
Read the sign, pal. This house now
          belongs to the bank.

                                                 (CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: 102.

Carter paces over to the door and rips the paper off. He
reads it and walks and wails ...
                         CARTER
             Cody ...!

INT. BED - DAY
Cody pops his head from underneath the covers and drinks in
the brightness.
Gina’s head pops up from underneath the covers.
They both smile at each other and throw the covers into the
lens.
