Development of a Web-based module on Healthy Eating
Rute Soares Rui Baptista-Gonçalves
Student Services, University of East London, United Kingdom
1. Introduction
A web-based module was developed in order to target a detected need in delivering efficient, simple and appealing programmes on healthy eating and healthy lifestyle across the University. This format is easily accessible, interactive, user-friendly, tailor-made, and is available 24/7. These are some of the advantages this type of programme can have when choosing and adopting a healthier lifestyle through healthy eating.
2. Aims/Objectives
♥ To develop a web-based module, incorporated in WebCT (Blackboard Inc, 1997) on healthy lifestyle and healthy eating, composed by several resources/materials to facilitate the learning process and to encourage healthy choices; ♥ To identify all the relevant areas to cover on the module, drawn from a University-wide needs assessment.
3. Methods
♥ Focus groups of 12 students each (needs assessment and pilot study); ♥ Analysis of data from focus groups: ♥ Categorizing the data into potential sections and methods to use in conveying information; ♥ Preparation of the module and transferring it onto a WebCt-compatible format; ♥ Evaluation of the module (to be completed).
4. Results
Basis of nutrition and health Concentration and energy busters
Web module Sections
Lifestyle, exercise and healthy mind Shopping, cooking and eating on a budget Practical skills
Healthy Eating plan
Each session was created based on student comments and interpretation of their needs while being assessed at the Student Health Centre. The above sections were then developed using interactive activities (e.g. quizzes, videos, exercises). Each individual is able to self-assess the knowledge on the different subjects, test it and improve it if necessary, as well as gaining relevant information on healthy eating.
5. Discussion
The focus group was an effective method to help identify and reinforce identify relevant areas of interest and understand the expectations of the University population.
6. Conclusions
The pilot evaluation has proven that , the Healthy Eating Web-based module is set to be a major success in encouraging students, implementing a healthier lifestyle through adopting healthy eating patterns and ultimately, promote better health.
