What is Physical Therapy?
• Definition
– To assist recovery in well-accepted practice in human medicine and surgery – Targets restoration
• 1.The ability to work in a previously paralyzed patient. • 2. A patient that got hit by a car or just injured.

• Reduce pain • Promote healing process • Restore/maintain range of joint monitor and normal movement patterns • Build muscle mass during recovery

Services Offered
• The underwater treadmill • Terrestrial treadmill • Low-level laser therapy • Therapeutic ultrasound • Electrical stimulation • Massage therapy • Heat and cold therapy • Strengthening exercises • Balance and coordination training • Gait training

Most Common Services
• • • • Underwater Treadmill Massage Therapy Strengthening Exercises Heat and Cold Therapy

Underwater Treadmill
• Designed especially for rehabilitation dogs. • Allows the patient to exercise at a level that is appropriate and safe for his/her condition. • If patient is injured and won’t walk on ground, will use the injured body part in water.

Massage Therapy
• An increased overall sense of wellness • A general sense of calming and reduction of stress • Increased flexibility and movement • Pain reduction or relief of pain • Decreased recovery time from surgery or trauma • Increased circulation of the blood, lymphatic and nervous systems • Removal of toxins from the body and its organs

Strengthening Exercises
• Strengthening of the forelimbs and upper extremity require a focus on stability especially with existing cases of instability such as a united process. • Active Exercise • Helps to improve muscle strength, coordination, and cardiovascular function. • Depending in the level of function of each individual patient.

Heat Therapy
• Increases tissue temperature, producing pain relief, sedation, and an increase in local metabolism. • Heat Therapy facilities the healing process by producing blood vessel dilution, enhancing local blood flow and decreases edema.

Cold Therapy
• Decreases the massages sent through the nerves, therapy, thereby creating mild pain reduction. • It produces vessel constriction in localized tissues to decrease swelling and relax skeletal muscles.

Doing Physical Therapy at Home
• Four Steps
1. Take animal to Vet before beginning any therapy programs. 2. To stay with the animal if he/she is going to have physical therapy at a Vet hospital. 3. The owner must begin therapy at home by relaxing the animal. 4. To start the therapy slowly with a range of motion on each joint.

Seven Goals to Achieve During Physical Therapy
Decrease pain and facilities healing of inflamed and injured neurological and musculoskeletal tissue. 2. To maintain normal range of motion in affected joints such as hind limbs or forelimbs. 3. To prevent soft tissue contracture and fibrosis in weak or paralyzed limbs. 1.

4. To prevent further disuse of atrophy of affected musculature of hind limbs/forelimbs, during the healing process of neurological and musculoskeletal tissues. 5. To improve strength and function of weak or paralyzed limbs. 6. To maximize post surgical recovery and function of the patient. 7. To provide positive psychological effects for the patient and owner.

• Physical Therapy has been around for many years. • It has helped many animals with many problem in the joint and bones. • Physical therapy is always helpful to all animals. • Technology will increase the usage of Physical Therapy and more.
