Chipeta and Chief Ouray were Ute Indians who made a great impact on Colorado history. Ouray was born near Taos Pueblo in 1833. Chipeta was born in 1830 near Ignacio. Ouray and Chipeta married in 1859, and when Ouray’s father died, Ouray became Chief. In 1879 Chief Ouray kept the Meeker Massacre from becoming a war. Nathan Meeker tried to force the Indians to be farmers and wanted their land plowed and used for horse racing. The Indians resisted. Mr. Meeker asked for troops to be sent from the Army. Thirteen men from the Army were killed by the Indians on their way. Nathan Meeker and ten others were killed also. In 1880 a treaty was signed and said that all Utes be moved out of Colorado to a reservation in Utah. Chief Ouray died in 1880. 25 years after he died, Chipeta married a Commoguech. Chipeta died in 1924 and was buried near the town of Ouray, just south of Montrose.
