The Coffee Quality Institute® (CQI) is non
profit organization working internationally
to improve the quality of coffee and the
lives of the people who produce it.
Creating a Sustainable Future

                         Improve Quality

                         Identify and

                         Leaders and
The Q Coffee System

   An internationally recognized
        system for evaluating
            cup quality
Building the System – Program Components

The Basic Steps for a Country to Enroll
             in the Q Program:
  • Cupper Training (Several Levels)
  • Cupper Certification
  • Establish In-Country Partner
  • Begin Q Grading Services
  • Promote Graded Coffee to Buyers
Licensed Q Graders

The goal of the Q Grader Program is to create a
skilled and credible body of specialty coffee
       cuppers to consistently and accurately
              assess coffee quality,
                both cup and grade

CQI is working with USAID through Fintrac

There was a major shift in 2009 to collaborate with ECX which trasformed
  CQI focus and training priorities
• Ethiopia has 85 Q Graders
• 2009 Trainings
   – Q Grader certification became focused more on ECX cuppers
   – Concordance exercise between SCAA and ECX forms
   – New regional lab training and development of ARRIVAL Q
• In-Country Partner development
   – Agreement has been signed by EXC and extensive technical work with them has
led to a preliminary assessment method unique to the world
   – Coordination for new Direct Sales (DST) Trading with SCAA and ECX
        A Q Certificate
        certifies the quality of
        a specific lot:

          Buyers are interested in:
             Final Score
             Flavor Star
                Cup Profile

          Buyer understands the
          potential of the coffee
      Arrival Q vs. Q Certificate
• Arrival Q is only for small lots
  from regional warehouses for
  domestic trade only and still
  contains all defects
• Arrival Q cannot represent
  export coffee in any manner
• Q Certificates require 3 Q
  Graders, a neutral ICP
• Q Certificates are clean from
  defects and ready for export

  Leverage new technologies to
   expand awareness and bring
sellers and buyers closer together

Project Objectives - Ethiopia

 • Qualified Cuppers: Increase the number of qualified professional coffee cuppers
who earn a Q Grader License by passing a set of standardized cupping tests and a
     written examination.
 • Field Lab Readiness: Visit, evaluate and strengthen field lab operations in each of
the coffee regions to ensure the coffee grading at each lab is standardized and
consistent with the requirements of the Q Market System. This is especially true with
the new ECX warehouses and the national lab.
 • Market Linkages: Strengthen the internal capacity of the coffee sector so that the Q
Market System is self sustaining at the end of the program:
            • ECX and ECEA administering the Q Grading program.
            • Private companies increasing their buyer base through the Q Market System
 • Train-the-Trainer: Develop a specific training program for cupping instructors so
that further cupping training is carried out by members of the Ethiopian coffee trade
     on a self-sustaining basis.
