BLANK SCREEN
Blank screen with main character (Joey) talking with the
female lead (Alice).
                    JOEY
How do you think the world will
          end?

                    ALICE
Not with a bang, but a whimper.

EXT. DESERT - DAYTIME

Intro music plays while a desert is shown. The wind blows
across the sand creating clouds. Debris is shown flying
through the air.

INT. BEDROOM - NIGHT

Joey and Alice are lying in bed under the covers. There is a
small night-table beside the bed on Joey’s side with a lamp
on it and a picture of Joey and Alice together smiling. Joey
reaches over to a lamp beside the bed and switches it off.

                    ALICE
          Sleep well, sweet dreams.
                    JOEY
          Thanks, goodnight.

Joey and Alice kiss goodnight, roll over and close their
eyes.

INT. BEDROOM - NIGHT

Joey is dreaming. A digital clock in a dark room is shown
with blurred, unreadable numbers. A TV set is playing a news
show, the headlines along the bottom are blurred and
unreadable. A male reporter (Hank) speaks about the
increased shortage of food.

                    HANK
The food shortages across the globe
          are continuing to increase. In
some major cities such as New York
and Mexico City riots have begun.
Starving men and women all over the
globe are starting to fight for
whatever scraps of food they can
          get their hands on.

News show cuts to clips of rioters and starving people in
Mexico City.
                       HANK
The World Food Board has stated
that they are working on a solution
to the problem. Here is Terrence
from the world food board on the
             famine.
The News broadcast cuts to the world food board HQ where
Terrence speaks about the WFB plan.
                       TERRENCE
Thanks Hank. We are working very
hard on finding a solution to the
problem. As you know every plant we
find is dead or dying. We have the
best scientists from all over the
world working together to come up
with a way of... fixing - or
healing if you will - the plants.
We are quite confident that we will
             start growing the much needed
             foodstuffs again posthaste. Back to
             you Hank.
The News cuts back to Hank.

                       HANK
That was Terrence Jones with the
World Food Board. In other news
             2008 model-As are being recalled.
There has been a statement put out
             asking that everyone bring their
cars back to be fixed as there is a
problem with the brakes on this
model. And now to Molly with the
             weather report.

Introductions to the same news show are shown with dates on
each intro. The intros pass quickly showing the dates
passing. One month later is the last date shown.

EXT. WFB HEADQUARTERS - DAYTIME

Joey is outside of the World Food Board HQ staring up at the
building. There is no sign of anyone around and the doors
are broken. Joey turns around with a blank expression and
flies away over empty fields which appear to all be deserts.
Joey sees an old decrepit sign for a restaurant and slowly
starts to fall from the sky. He lands on the ground and

falls to his hands and knees. He has a sad expression on his
face. He quickly gets thinner and thinner until his bones
show and he finally turns into a skeleton.

INT. KITCHEN - MORNING
Joey sits at the table in the kitchen of his house. Alice is
at the stove frying bacon and pancakes. They are both in
pajamas and look slightly tired. (Bacon sizzles)

                       ALICE
                  (Singing softly)
My baby loves bacon... So that’s
             what I’m makin’
                       JOEY
I had a weird dream last night.
                       ALICE
             What happened?
                       JOEY
First there was a newscast talking
about food shortages, and then I
was alone outside a big building
and I turned and flew over deserts
and there were no plants anywhere.
In the end I saw an ad for a burger
joint, fell to the ground, and then
just withered away. And the news
             reporter was Hank.
Alice turns away from her cooking to look at Joey.

                       ALICE
                  (Nonchalant)
             That’s a rather depressing dream...
                       JOEY
                  (Jokingly/Laughing)
Yeah... but i guess that’s why we
have bacon to eat when we wake up.
Alice smiles and serves breakfast. The table is set with the
food, milk, butter in a small dish, and syrup. Joey and
Alice begin to eat as they talk.
                       JOEY
So my brother is coming into town
in a couple days. I invited him to
             come stay with us.

                                                   (CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: 4.

                       ALICE
How long has it been since you’ve
             seen him?

                       JOEY
Its been a few months, I guess I
             haven’t seen him since Christmas.
             God, that was a disaster.

                       ALICE
Yeah... Your mom is a bit of a
             wreck lately huh?
                       JOEY
Mhm, I can understand how it is for
her, but I thought it would be
alright with the family around you
know? What can you do though?
                        ALICE
             Well, hopefully she’ll be better
             next year.
Joey Sighs.
                       JOEY
                  (Thoughtfully and slightly
                  sad)
             Mhm. (beat) I hope so.
Alice goes to Joey and hugs him.

                       ALICE
             I’m sorry honey.
Alice steps back and looks at Joey who has a distant
expression on his face. He gazes out the window and then
looks back at Alice with a forced smile.

                       JOEY
Thanks, I’ll be okay, I better go
             get ready for work.

INT. WASHROOM - MORNING
Joey stands in the washroom in a suit tying his tie in front
of the mirror. He stares at himself in the mirror for a
moment and then checks his watch and walks out.

                        JOEY
I’m heading to work honey, ill see
             you later.

                       ALICE
             Have a good day.

EXT. BUS STOP - MORNING

Joey walks to the bus stop near his house. It is late spring
and warm. The day is dark, cloudy and windy, but not rainy
yet. Joey stands waiting until a girl (Dawn) walks up and
begins a conversation.

                       DAWN
                  (Vivaciously)
             Hey there stranger!
                        JOEY
                   (Slightly surprised)
             Hi.
                       DAWN
My name’s Dawn, nice to meet you!
                       JOEY
                  (Smiling)
Hey Dawn, I’m Joey. It’s nice to
             meet you too.
                       DAWN
Why thank you! Isn’t it an exciting
day, i can just FEEL the storm
             coming! (in a singsong voice)
             Thunder and lightning very very
             frightening!

Dawn giggles and Joey smiles politely and awkwardly. The bus
rolls up.
                          JOEY
             After you.

                       DAWN
                  (giggling)
Thanks, but I’m not taking the bus,
             bye-bye.
Dawn skips off and Joey watches with intrigue before
boarding the bus. The bus begins to drive away and Joey sees
Dawn standing outside. He sees her staring into the
distance with the wind blowing through her hair. Just as
the bus passes her she looks right at him and smiles.
                                                         6.

INT. BUS - MORNING
On the way to work while Joey is riding the bus he sees a
homeless man on the street. As the bus passes by the
homeless man looks up at him and they make eye contact. The
homeless man has an extremely sad look in his eyes and looks
dirty and tired. After the bus passes the man Joey looks
forward and has a sad expression on his face.

INT. NEWS CHANNEL PRODUCTION BUILDING - MORNING

Joey stands at a table with coffee and donuts in the
newsroom talking to Hank while news production members work
in the background. Both Joey and Hank have cups of coffee
and are drinking as they talk.

                    JOEY
          Hey Hank, how’s it going?
                    HANK
          Not bad, you?

                    JOEY
Its going alright... I’m a little
          tired
                    HANK
          Hm, who isn’t these days?
                       JOEY
          Haha yeah.
Joey and Hank stand by the table and sip their coffee.

                    JOEY
          So how’s life?
                    HANK
Good. Dean had his first soccer
game the other day. Little league
soccer is really funny. They all
run in one big mass after the ball.
Joey laughs and continues to sip his coffee.

                    HANK
          How about you?
                    JOEY
          You know, so-so. My brother’s
flying in from Halifax. I haven’t
seen him since he moved out there.

                                                  (CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: 7.

                       HANK
             Cool, Family’s important.
                       JOEY
Yeah, it should be fun. He’s always
a blast to hang out with.

                       HANK
             What does he do anyways?
                       JOEY
He’s a repairman now, TVs and
stuff, nothing grand, but he likes
             it i think.
                         HANK
             Hm, cool.

Hank looks over the table at the different things there are
to eat. He doesn’t seem to find any of the options very
appetizing.
                       JOEY
So I was waiting for my bus this
morning and this girl came up and
             started talking to me.
                       HANK
             Hm, what did she want?

                       JOEY
I don’t know she just started
             talking about the weather and
stuff. She was kind of cute...

                       HANK
                  (Teasingly)
Ha, you sound like you have a
             little crush!

                       JOEY
Ha, no. I was just saying. Anyway a
             guy can look right?
Hank is called to begin his morning report.

                       HANK
Okay, I gotta run I’ll catch ya
             later.
                       JOEY
             See ya ’round.

Joey walks off to his office to check his email. On his way
he says hello and smiles politely to co-workers he passes.
The greetings are brief and awkward and Joey does not seem
to have any real relationship with any of them. The halls of
the building seem old and worn. Fluorescent lights line the
ceilings of the halls and make the atmosphere of the place
dreary and almost depressing. Once in his office he sits
down and begins to read his email. Joey does not seem happy
to be at work. His office is small and very cluttered. There
are papers, books, magazines and newspapers all over the
room. He has a small desk with a computer on it and a cheap
plastic analog clock on the wall. Joey gets an email from
his boss telling him about a man (Giovanni) he must
interview the next day. The email has a picture attached of
Giovanni.
                       JOEY
                  (reading email in his head)
Joey there is a poet (Giovanni
Fletcher) who will be doing a
reading over at the Buck theater. I
want you to head over their -
             (aloud) Idiot... - tomorrow morning
and get an interview from this guy.
He is fanatically against war and
we would like a story on him. Have
             the printed interview and the
recording on my desk by the end of
             the day tomorrow.
Joey looks up at the clock and then back to his screen. The
clock is then shown with the time passing very quickly until
5:00 when Joey is done work. Joey walks out through the
halls saying goodbye to co-workers he sees. He passes a man
and raises his hand as if to say goodbye awkwardly. The man
walks right past him seemingly not noticing. Joey walks out
the doors and through the parking lot to the bus stop. It is
dark, windy and raining outside. The sound of the rain
continues into the next scene.

INT. SHOWER - NIGHT
The sound of the rain melds into the sound of the shower and
Joey then turns off the shower and steps out. A slight bit
of rain and thunder can be heard. He puts on boxers and
walks to bed. Joey gets into bed where Alice is laying
already and kisses her goodnight.
                          JOEY
             Goodnight.

CONTINUED: 9.

                       ALICE
             Goodnight, I love you.
                       JOEY
             Love you too.

Joey turns off the bedside lamp and the room is very dark.
Fade to black with the sound of the thunder still going in
the background and continuing into the next scene.

EXT. BATTLEFIELD - DAYTIME
The sounds of thunder fade into the sounds of explosions and
gunshots. A wounded soldier crawls into a foxhole in the
middle of a field. He speaks over a radio.

                       SOLDIER
I don’t know where the hell I am!
I’ll throw a smoke grenade, come
get me. I’m hit and I need out.
The soldier drops his radio and prepares the smoke
grenade. The voice over the radio speaks but is unheard by
the soldier.
                       RADIO
                  (faded speech)
Negative, do not throw smoke. The
             area is swarming, hold your
             position until reinforcements
             arrive.
The soldier throws the grenade, white smoke filling the
air. He leans against the shelter and looks at his wounded
leg. A few moments pass as he tries to treat it, then he
looks up into the barrel of a rifle. A shot is fired. Blood
covers his name tag, reading ’Fletcher’.

INT. THE WAR ROOM - EVENING
Joey sits in a council room with Giovanni and other
soldiers. Maps are shown on screens and a big angry looking
general (Giovanni) stands at the front of the room giving a
speech. Giovanni is in a military uniform with many medals
and a military beret on his head. He wears a pistol at his
side. Sounds of Giovanni speaking are heard before he is
seen.
                       GIOVANNI
                  (Furiously but with a steady
                  pace - snarling and yelling)

CONTINUED: 10.

                       GIOVANNI (cont’d)
             Disgusting, shit-eating pigs. We
must attack and destroy them now!
Those dogs eat our young. Those
             despicable vermin. The longer we
wait the more time they have to do
their vicious work. It is time for
us to move quickly and strike down
the vile beasts. (pause) The bomb.
We will squish the maggots, turn
             those crawling crickets into the
dirt they came from. And they shall
crawl forth and we’ll say to them,
’Abandon hope, ye who prey on the
weak!’ We shall throw them down
into the fiery furnace where there
will be weeping and gnashing of
teeth! A dreadful wrath they shall
have rain upon them of fallout and
hell. Ready the bombs, ready the
planes, ready the tanks and sound
the alarms. Today this war ends,
             today. Those fucking cockroaches
will die! Like gods we shall stand
before them and we shall say, ’The
devil and all the wicked shall be
tormented in the presence of the
holy angels, and in the the
presence of the Lamb. The smoke of
             their torment ascendeth for ever
and ever.’ Their sons who will die
             now...

             ...justice.

EXT. BATTLEFIELD - NIGHT
Through dust and sand flashes are seen in the distance and
explosions are heard.

INT. THE WAR ROOM - EVENING
Giovanni paces across the room as the monitor shows updates
on the status of the attack. The screen shows the names of
different cities and whether these have been bombed.
Giovanni laughs as the reports show city after city as
decimated.

But we win! Don’t you see? We won

             war!

Chin up, soldier. Don’t you see
this is what we’ve all been working
for, don’t you see that this is...
(firmly, after taking a deep breath
with a look of excited madness on
             his face) Success.
The Private is wide eyed and there are tears forming in his
eyes. He looks terrified and is shaking.

EXT. FIELD - DAYTIME
A view out the window of the war room. Time lapse of a
solitary tree near one of the bombed cities. Show the tree
dying very quickly to show the time passing.

INT. THE WAR ROOM - EVENING

In the war room, everyone looks visibly nauseous and seem to
have burns on their skin. Giovanni has burns and looks pale,
and sweats profusely. The regular personnel appear to be
dying quickly and all around. Joey, now the private, watches
in horror but does not seem to be affected by the radiation.

                       JOEY
                  (Horrified and indignant)

             that they’re all gone.
                       GIOVANNI
                  (Distastefully)
             Quit your whimpering, coward. They
died for the cause, they knew what
             they signed up for.
Joey points outside as he speaks.

                       JOEY
What about them? Out there? Did
they sign up for this fucking
disaster, did they sign up to puke
their guts up and watch their skin
             burn?
                       GIOVANNI
             Its collateral damage, you pathetic
             rat.

                       JOEY
They’re all dead, every one of
             them!
                       GIOVANNI
All’s fair in love and war.
After a moment of silence Giovanni pulls his pistol from its
holster and points it at Joey. He pulls back the slide and
then shoots Joey three times. Joey falls to the ground dead.
Giovanni then laughs deeply as he looks around the room full
of dead soldiers. The world is then shown with a faded
version of Giovanni standing in the war room juxtaposed over
top. The world is empty and desolate. Every person shown is
dead. Giovanni keeps laughing increasingly more maniacally.
                       GIOVANNI
                  (Screaming)
I am my own damn god!
Giovanni then puts his pistol to his head and shoots himself
in the temple.

INT. BEDROOM - MORNING
Joey twitches and wakes up quite suddenly. He looks quite
pale. The room is bright with the morning sun shining in the
windows. Joey looks over at Alice and sees that she is still
asleep. He kisses her on the cheek and gets out of bed.

Alice sighs and rolls over but stays asleep. Joey walks out
of the room goes downstairs. He walks into the kitchen and
pulls down a box of cereal from the cupboard. He pours
himself a bowl and returns the box. He then takes the milk
out of the fridge and pours some into his cereal. He then
takes a paper and pen from a drawer and sits down in front
of his cereal. He begins to eat and write a list entitled:
"Questions for Giovanni". As Joey eats his cereal he writes
down questions on the list. 1. When did you first begin
writing poetry? 2. How do you hope your poetry will affect
your audience? 3. What inspired you to begin reading your
poetry to public audiences? etc.
Alice then walks down the stairs and into the kitchen.
                       JOEY
             Good morning.

                       ALICE
                  (Sleepily)
Hey, how long have you been up?
                       JOEY
Oh not too long, I thought id let
             you sleep while I worked.
                       ALICE
             What are you working on?
                       JOEY
I have to go interview this poet
today. Its bizarre though, I had
             another weird dream again last
night, and in this one there was
some sort of war, and the general
or whatever looked just like this
             poet I have to interview.
                       ALICE
That is strange. How long do you
have before you need to go?

                       JOEY
I got a little while, why?
                       ALICE
I wanted to talk about your brother
             coming, he’ll be here tomorrow.
                       JOEY
Yeah, it’ll be good to see him.

that new Italian place down the
             road.

                       JOEY
I dunno, if you want? I’m sure we

Joey goes back to eating his cereal and finishes it. He
takes the bowl to the sink and leaves it there.

                       JOEY
I’ve got to go get dressed for

             before work.

             I’ll see you tonight.
                       ALICE
Mhm, remember I won’t be home till
later because I have my Japanese
             class tonight after work.
                       JOEY
             Okay, have fun.
                        ALICE
             Thanks.
Joey and Alice kiss goodbye and Joey heads upstairs to get
changed. After Joey goes upstairs Alice goes to the sink and
takes care of the cereal bowl Joey left there. She then
takes the milk carton he left on the table and puts it into
the fridge.

EXT. BUS STOP - MORNING
Joey is walking out the door of his house and down the
steps. He is wearing a suit and carrying a briefcase. He
walks down the sidewalk the opposite direction of the bus
stop on his way to the theater where the poet will be
performing. The day is bright and sunny and birds are heard

chirping in the air. He turns crossing the street and
continues walking. As he’s walking he sees Dawn sitting on a
low branch of a tree with her eyes closed smiling. Joey
walks up to the tree with a puzzled but amused expression on
his face.

                       JOEY
                  (Amused)
             Hey Dawn... whatcha up to?
                       DAWN
                  (Surprised, but then happy)
Oh! Hey Joey, I just heard the
birds chirping and I decided to
spend some time with them. Birds
             need love too you know.

Joey laughs and gives Dawn a look as though she’s a little
strange.
                       JOEY
             How old are you?

                       DAWN
Well that’s a rather rude question,
you know you’re not supposed to ask
             a lady her age!
                        JOEY

             Oh no, I meant...
             Just because...
You know, with the whole tree
             climbing and everything...
             I’m sorry!
                       DAWN
                  (Laughing)
Its okay, I know what you meant.
Anyhow you’re just jealous that I’m
so full of youth and vitality that
             I still climb trees.
                       JOEY
                  (Laughing slightly, as if in
                  disbelief)
You’re right, I’m all tied up in
             this stuffy suit...
But I must be going, I’ve got to go
             do an interview for work.

                  (Blushing slightly)
             See-ya.
Joey walks away towards the theater. After a few steps he
looks back at Dawn. She hangs from a tree branch and sticks
her tongue out at him. Joey laughs and continues to walk.

INT. THEATER - MORNING
Giovanni is shown in the back of a small old theater. The
place is dimly lit and has a warm feel to it. There are old
props and costumes laying around some with dust on them. The
place seems as though it hasn’t been used much in recent
years. Giovanni is pacing around the room muttering
unintelligible things to himself. He is wearing a black
basque beret and a dark red scarf. He also wears a long
sweeping cloak. As he paces his face shows a progressively
deeper and deeper concentration as if he is trying to figure
something out. In the main room of the theater a small
amount of people begin to come in. The seats begin to fill
up slightly, though the total number of people sitting is
small. The theater is still dim as Joey walks in the door.
Joey squints as his eyes adjust to the different lighting
and then he walks in and takes a seat. Joey takes some
papers and a pen out of his briefcase as well as a recorder.
Soon after he readies himself the curtain rises and Giovanni
begins his reading. Giovanni walks around the stage as he
performs.
                        GIOVANNI
                   (Grandiosely)
The hounds of war, the birds of
             prey,
This subject is sore it must end
             today.
Let us scream out a vociferous
             protest,
For this bout of violence we do
             detest.

             The broken bleeding disaffection,
             The tired pleading insurrection.
             Like cattle, moved along despite
             their cries,
             These men, shepherded to their
             demise.
             Foreign wonders,
             now attempted plunders.

                       GIOVANNI (cont’d)
             The immense and immeasurable greed,
             The careless, callous desire to
             succeed.

These herds they march across the
             land,
             Their poisonous grasp, death’s own
             hand.
             Despair, destruction, and the
             sorrow carried,
Along the wings of war, to military
             married.
Giovanni stares out at the crowd as he speaks the next part
and tears form in his eyes. As he speaks of strangling he
reaches his hands out as if he is strangling someone.
And the soldier he would cry,
That on the day you die,
          I will be there,
          And i will stare...
Into your crying eyes, As i squeeze
          the life out of you.

                       GIOVANNI
                  (Passionately, almost
                  screaming)
Oh MERCY MERCY MERCY, Where have
you vanished to, The compassion and
the love, All gone gone gone.
Giovanni shakes his head and drops to his knees as he says
it’s all gone. He pauses for a moment after this and then
looks up hopefully as he speaks the rest of the poem.
Tell me, where have all the doves
          flown?
Who will stop the world’s deafening
          groan?
          These jackals they run,
They wreak havoc anywhere under the
          sun.
We must rise to tame these
          monsters,
          Our duty, to our children’s
          futures.

             We are the peaceful movement,
We will not give up nor relent.
We will work for an end to this
             fight,
             We will show pacifism’s might.
                                                      18.

As Giovanni finishes his poem he rises triumphantly and
bows. The crowd in the theater claps as he bows. The
curtains slowly close and most of the audience slowly exits.

INT. THEATER - MORNING
Giovanni stands near the stage speaking to someone. The man
he is speaking to smiles and they hug. The man then walks
away with Giovanni. Joey sees Giovanni walking away
backstage and tries to follow him. He gets backstage and
sees Giovanni just disappearing around a corner. He runs
after him and comes into a room with many props. Sitting on
a counter is a prop gun which looks exactly the same as the
one from his dream. He calls out to Giovanni.
                    JOEY
               (Shouting)
          Mr. Fletcher?! Hello?
Joey hears no answer and continues to make his way through
the backstage of the theater. He finally comes to an outside
door that is slightly ajar. He opens it and looks outside
but he doesn’t see Giovanni around. Frustrated, Joey slams
the door and walks back through the theater. On his way back
there is a picture on the wall of the battlefield from
Joey’s dream. It is ambiguous whether or not Joey sees it.

INT. NEWS PRODUCTION BUILDING - MIDDAY
Joey walks directly into his work building as if the theater
was connected to his workplace. Joey walks through his work
towards his office. As always in the halls he politely
addresses everyone he walks by. He makes it to his office
and sits down at his computer. He opens his briefcase and
pulls out his papers and his recorder. He turns the recorder
on and rewinds it to the beginning of the tape. The voice of
Giovanni’s performance begins to play.

                     GIOVANNI
                (Recorded)
The hounds of war, the birds of
          prey,
This subject is sore, it must end
          today.

The screen and the sound of Giovanni fades. Joey begins to
type at his computer. His hands are shown moving over the
keys. His hands are shown moving faster and faster until
they’re a blur and then they stop moving and the clock is
shown. The time is 4:45. Joey prints off the report he is
typing up. He takes the papers, puts a paperclip on them and

turns his computer off. He walks out the door of his office
and towards the office of his supervisor. He says goodbye,
have a good evening and other such pleasantries to the
co-workers he passes and eventually reaches his boss’s
office. His boss’s office is larger and much cleaner than
his. There is an old fancy looking clock on the wall and
plants in the corners of the room. In the middle of the room
is a large wooden desk with a computer, a name tag and a
large prestigious looking paperweight. The boss is not in
his room so Joey leaves the report and the tape on his desk
and walks out. Joey then walks back through the halls
towards the outside doors. On his way he sees the weatherman
doing a report on the current weather.
                       WEATHERMAN
                  (Energetically)
Its a beautiful day out there
folks! 25 degrees with a nice
breeze. A great day to walk the dog
or head to the beach. Take
advantage of it while it lasts...
The sound of the weatherman fades out as Joey passes. He
makes it to the doors and walks outside into the sunlight.
As he opens the doors birds can be heard chirping and a
pleasant wind is also heard blowing.

EXT. BUS STOP - LATE AFTERNOON
Joey stands at the bus stop outside and smiles. He looks
around and sees green trees and the sun shining in a bright
blue sky. He glances from the bus stop sign to the sidewalk
down the road which is lined with trees in bloom. He glances
at the bus stop sign one more time and then turns and begins
to walk down the sidewalk cheerfully. Joey is shown walking
down the sidewalk past some stores and bars when all of a
sudden he hears someone shouting out from across the street.
                       DAWN
                  (Loud and almost ecstatic)
             Hey! Joey! Over here!
Joey looks over across the street and sees Dawn standing
there. He smiles and waves.

                       JOEY
             Hey!
Dawn runs across the street and a car honks at her as they
step on their brakes abruptly.

                       JOEY
                  (Concerned)
Woah! Be careful, you’re gonna get
             yourself killed!

                       DAWN
                  (Laughing)
             We all gotta die someday!
Joey looks at Dawn and laughs.

                       DAWN
Come have a drink with me!
                        JOEY
                   (Uncomfortably)
Err, I really should be getting
             home.
                       DAWN
                  (Exasperated)
Come on, one drink it’ll be fun!

                       JOEY
                  (Hesitant)
             I don’t know...
Dawn looks up at Joey wide-eyed with "puppy eyes".

                       DAWN
                  (Begging)
             Pleeeeease! Pretty pretty please
come have a drink with me!

                       JOEY
                  (Laughing)
You really are a little kid huh.
Dawn frowns at Joey.

                       JOEY
Oh alright, I’ll come have a drink.
But just one and then I gotta go.
Joey motions one, holding up one finger. Dawn grabs his
finger and pulls him towards the bar.

                       DAWN
                  (Happily)
             Awesome!
                                                      21.

Joey and Dawn walk into a nearby pub called Cup of Bread.
The sign for the pub is a new sign made to look like an old
wooden one. It displays the name of the pub along with a
picture of a large mug with a loaf of bread in it. Dawn
skips along beside Joey as they walk to the bar.

INT. BAR - LATE AFTERNOON
Inside the bar it is fairly dim. The bar has a warm
atmosphere and is decorated like an old pub with wooden
beams and tables. There are old candles on the tables with
candle holders that look like they’ve had many candles melt
down onto them. Joey and Dawn go to the bar and sit down.
The bartender sees them and walks up.
                    BARTENDER
Hi there, what can I get for ya
          guys?
                    DAWN
I’ll have a beer, something pale,
          whatever you have on tap.

                    BARTENDER
          And you sir?
                    JOEY
I’ll have the same except dark.

The bartender moves off to pour the drinks.
                    DAWN
          So how’d your interview go?

                    JOEY
Not great. His reading was really
          interesting and he was passionate
and all, but he disappeared before
I could ask him any questions.

                    DAWN
               (Thoughtfully)
          There’s something special about
that I think. When someone is so
          passionate about what they believe
in that they will speak and RANT
about it. Just stand up in front of
the world and say THIS is what’s
          right, BELIEVE ME!

                       JOEY
Serious all of a sudden, huh.
                       DAWN
             When the need arises...

                       JOEY
Well, what if they’re a good
             speaker, but morally degenerate?
                       DAWN
Then it’s up to us to filter what
             we hear I guess.
Joey looks at Dawn sort of surprised with the serious
thoughts she now speaks. Soon the bartender approaches with
their drinks.

                       BARTENDER
A pale beer for the lady, and a
             dark for the gent.
             JOEY DAWN
Thanks. Thanks.

                          BARTENDER
             Enjoy.
The bartender walks away to tend to other customers and do
other busy work. Joey and Dawn drink their beers as they
talk.

                       JOEY
So what do you actually do for a
             living anyways?
                       DAWN
             Well right now I’m accumulating
             debt daily.
                          JOEY
                     (Confused)
             What?

                       DAWN
             I’m a student!
Joey laughs a little.

                       DAWN
I’m going to be an astronaut!

                                                        (CONTINUED)

                       JOEY
                  (Laughing)
Is that so? I saw a shirt once that
said, "Not all dreams can come
true." And it had a picture of an
             astronaut on it.
                       DAWN
                  (Indignantly)
Well it IS so. One day I will be
             out among the stars, floating
towards infinity. You can report on
             it maybe.
                       JOEY
             Ha, maybe one day.
                       DAWN
One day... one day. Here we sit
             with candles lit waiting for
             something, just something special.
A change, a moment, an adventure or
something, so long as its special.
                       JOEY
                  (Jokingly)
And you’re not even done your first
             beer yet.
                       DAWN
                  (Offended)
             Don’t demean my revelations.

                       JOEY
                  (Apologetic)
I was just teasing, didn’t mean to
             offend.

Dawn’s expression changes suddenly and she instantly goes
back to being happy and cheerful as if she just put a mask
back on.
                       DAWN
So tell me about yourself Joey,
where did you grow up, what was it
             like, what makes you TICK.
                       JOEY
Jeez, talk about a tough question.
             You should be the reporter.

Joey makes an exaggerated gesture of loosening his tie and
sort of chuckles to himself. Dawn giggles a little at his
antics.

                       JOEY
Well, I grew up, or rather, I was
born and I aged in Winnipeg. My
             childhood was pretty normal I
guess. Family of four, mom and
             dad’s protective grasp versus me
and my brother’s rebellion. A cut
or two here, a broken bone there,
             you know, regular childhood stuff.
             The most important, or impacting
event came just last year, my dad
             passed away.
                       DAWN
                  (Concerned)
             I’m so sorry!

                       JOEY
I’ve come to accept it. What else
can you do right? Anyways, what
makes me tick... I guess I just
want to lead a decent life and end
up happy you know? Through love,
             achievement, nobility? I dunno, I
haven’t figured it out yet. How
about you? What makes you tick?
                       DAWN
             Well, for starters, trying to
             achieve my ambitions of course,
and... I wanna be a mom one day,
             you know, raise a kid.
                       JOEY
             Aw, that’s cute.
                       DAWN
                  (Severely)
             Do NOT interrupt me!

Dawn smacks the bar with her hand and looks furious.
                       JOEY
                  (Stuttering)
             I-I’m sorry!

                       DAWN
                  (Laughing)
I’m just kidding! See, I got the
             discipline down, no problem!
Joey laughs nervously.

                       DAWN
And um... I love to dance!
Dawn gets up from her seat and begins to dance in the bar.
Joey looks at her as if she’s crazy.

                       DAWN
             Dance with me!
                       JOEY
Nooo.. I don’t think so. No way.

                       DAWN
Come on, dance, it’ll be fun!
                       JOEY
             Everyone is staring like we’re
weirdos. This is like a bad
             movie...
                       DAWN
             Oh get over it!
Come on, just for this song, dance.

Joey begrudgingly gets up and shuffles his feet with Dawn.
He starts off barely moving but slowly begins to loosen up a
little and starts dancing casually. Dawn smiles at him and
grabs his hands to dance with him. Joey laughs awkwardly and
dances but looks quite uncomfortable with the situation.

                       DAWN
Aw, see isn’t this fun? I know
             you’re having fun right now!
                       JOEY
                  (Laughing)
             I guess so.
After dancing for a minute the song ends and they stop.

                       JOEY
             I’ve better get going.
                       DAWN
                  (Disappointed)
             So soon?

                        JOEY
                  (Mumbling)
Yeah, well you know I’ve gotta get
home, I’ve got some things i need
to take care of... and you know.. I
             should go.

Dawn gives Joey a sad look.
                        DAWN
             Okay.
                       JOEY
             This was fun, though, thanks.
                       DAWN
Thank YOU for the dance mister.

                       JOEY
                  (Laughing)
             You’re welcome, bye.
                        DAWN
             Bye-bye.

Joey puts some money down on the counter for his drink and
walks out of the pub. The pub is then shown in fast motion,
until everybody is gone. The view moves out the door.

EXT. OUTSIDE BAR - NOON
Joey is seen standing outside what at first appears to be
the pub in broad daylight. The sun is shining extremely
brightly. There are very few people around and the people
who are around seem very distressed. A couple people run by
shouting unintelligibly. Joey looks back at the pub but he
can’t make out the name of it as it is blurry. The picture
is also gone. Joey turns toward home and begins to run, he
runs all the way home. He opens the door and walks in.

INT. HOME - EVENING
Joey walks in the door to see a note on the wall.
"Dear Joey,

I’ve gone to watch the sun at the old drive in. They’ve got
the whole thing playing on the big screen! The scientists
say it could happen anytime tonight. I hope to see you
there!

Love Alice"
Joey shakes his head in disbelief and has a wide-eyed
terrified look on his face. He runs to the phone and tries
to dial a phone number. Instead of it ringing or him
reaching anyone he hears an old man talking.

                       OLD MAN
Well they say you know, that one
day the sun will burn out, just
like any other star you know. Just
up, and run out of gas the old
thing. They say it has to happen
eventually. I hope not in my
lifetime, or that of my kids, or my
             grandchildren, god bless them.
             Eventually though its gotta go,
just out with the lights. That one
             giant candle snuffed out, burned
right into the bottom of the candle
holder you know. A great gaseous
ghost then. I suppose when it goes,
so do we you know. But not in my
lifetime I hope, not in my
             lifetime...
The Old Man’s voice keeps rambling on and Joey drops the
phone. He then runs out the door.

EXT. LAUNCH SITE - AFTERNOON
Joey is standing at a space shuttle launch site. At first he
is confused as to where he is, but he sees a sign saying,
"Kennedy Space Center". Joey walks towards a large building
that looks very modern and new. The glass reflects very
brightly and the sun shines very strongly. Joey walks up to
the building and can’t see inside until he gets in because
of the glare.

INT. LAUNCH HEADQUARTERS - AFTERNOON
When he walks inside he comes face to face with Dawn who is
standing in the building in a space suit. She speaks
differently than usual being very serious.

                       JOEY
                  (Surprised)
Hey, what are you doing here?
                       DAWN
                  (Stoic)
We’re taking off in an hour. The
             final mission. The end... and
             hopefully, the beginning.
                       JOEY
You guys are just flying off?

                       DAWN
Its the only hope to save the human
race, we fly away searching for a
             planet we can live on.

                       JOEY
And the rest of us? Just left here
to die? Where is everyone else, who
gets to go on the ship?
                       DAWN
Only a select few were chosen for
             the re-population, you shouldn’t be
here, you can’t come along, you
             need to leave now.
                       JOEY
             I don’t want to die here, I don’t
want to be left here to burn.
                       DAWN
The mission leaves too soon, I must
             go.

                       JOEY
                  (Terrified)
             No! Don’t leave me!
Joey dives forward to try and grab onto Dawn but shes
already gone when he reaches for her. Joey slowly walks back
out the doors depressed.

EXT. DRIVE-IN THEATER - LATE AFTERNOON

When he gets out the doors he looks up towards the sun but
it is too bright and all he sees is bright light. When he
looks back down he is standing on a street near the drive-in
theater and there are a few people running by screaming. A
man stands in the middle of the street preaching about the
second coming. He has long hair and a beard and wears a
bright silver cross on his neck. The sun glints off of his

Joey starts walking towards the theater. As he walks the
bright sun reflects off everything he walks by. As he turns
a corner he comes upon a man who is seemingly homeless
walking down the road. The homeless man is wearing many
layers of tattered clothing including a scarf around his
neck. The man sits down against a building and pulls a
bottle of whiskey out of a paper bag. He opens the bottle
and begins to drink. The homeless man begins to laugh as he
drinks. He laughs very hard as Joey passes by.

                       HOMELESS MAN
                  (Cheerful and Laughing)
Ahhh, we’re all in the same boat
now aren’t we. The poor burn the
rich burn we all burn. Ha, we’re
all in the same boat now. Sit back
and watch the world sink, into the
flames. We’re all in the same boat
             now. Heh.
The homeless man takes another long drink from his bottle
and then continues to laugh. Joey keeps walking with a
scared look on his face. He soon comes upon the old drive-in
theater. As he walks into the theater all of a sudden it is
night time. The stars are all out and shining but the sun is
still visible in the night sky. Joey walks around the
theater searching for Alice. He looks in the different cars
there but he doesn’t see anyone he recognizes. Joey starts
to call out for her.
                       JOEY
                  (Distressed)
             Alice! Alice! Where are you!
There is no response at all and Joey keeps searching.
Eventually he comes upon an empty car, the window is rolled
down and the radio is on. In front of the radio in a cup
holder there is a coffee mug.

                        FRY’S FRIDAY RADIO
Well folks, we’re coming on down to
the end now. This is Fry’s Friday
Night Show here to talk you right
to the finish. They say that it
won’t be more than a couple hours
now. We’re gonna play a few more
songs before we do our big
             countdown.

Joey gets into the car and suddenly is driving down the
highway in the night. Joey puts his head out the window as
he drives and calls out.
                       JOEY
Alice, come back to me! Alice!
There is no answer from any person but a wolf can be heard
howling in the night. Fry’s Friday Radio comes back on and
Joey turns it up.

                       FRY’S FRIDAY RADIO
And we’re back here on Fry’s Friday
Nights. Its just about time now.
             Does anyone have any resolutions?
We should all decide what we’ll do
differently in the new life. I’m
gonna apologize to my dad I think.
And sorry to Gloria, I never meant
to hurt you! I’d recommend that
everyone says a good good-bye to
their lover now because this is it.
             This is the finale.

Joey angrily changes the station upon hearing that everyone
should be saying good-bye. He flips through a few stations
before he finds one that actually has a person speaking.
                       NEWS REPORTER
...and it seems as if the
expedition that was sent out to try
and continue the human race is not
             doing well. The crew-members are
having loud violent arguments as to
             the direction they should take.
They all seem out of sorts probably
due to the tragedy they all just
             flew away from. Allegedly the
captain, Dawn, was stabbed in an
             altercation with the ship cook.
After he stabbed her she pulled out
a gun and shot him! Due to the lack
of gravity they are having trouble
             stopping the bleeding. It seems
like this really is the end for
             humanity.

Joey is overcome with sadness and his eyes well up as if he
is about to cry.
                       JOEY
                  (Whispering)
             Good-bye Dawn.

Joey angrily flicks the radio back to Fry’s Friday Night
Show.
                       FRY’S FRIDAY RADIO
...and those are the Fry’s fine
picks for places to see it all
             disappear. Just another couple
songs, and then we can all count it
             down together.
A song begins to play on the radio and Joey takes his foot
off the gas. The car begins to coast to a stop out on the
highway. The sun still burns brightly in the night sky
beside the stars. The car comes to a stop and Joey opens the
door. He turns up the radio and then gets out of the car. He
walks around to the front of the car and climbs up onto it.
He leans his back against the windshield and stares up into
the sky as Fry comes back on the radio.
                       FRY’S FRIDAY RADIO
             To everyone out there listening,
thank you for spending these last
             special moments with me. It’s

one more minute and then we’re in
god’s hands. For all those who were
             counting on a death-bed confession
and repentance now is the time to
do it if you haven’t already. Now,
everyone hold on to your loved
ones, its time to start counting

INT. BEDROOM - MORNING
Alice stands in the bedroom at the window and pulls open the
curtains. The day outside is bright and sunny and the light
pours into the room shining on Joey’s face. Joey wakes up as
the light shines on him. As he wakes up he still has the
same look on his face from the dream. He looks around and
sees Alice standing in the room and realizes it was all a
dream. He gets out of bed walks up to Alice and hugs her.

                       JOEY
I just had a terrible dream...
                       ALICE
             What happened?
                       JOEY

                       JOEY
                  (Slightly Distressed)
Yeah, they kept telling me the
world was gonna end because the sun
was exploding and then I couldn’t
find you. The radio told us all to
be by our loved ones, but I
             couldn’t find you.

                  (Laughing a little)
Well I’m here. Just a dream honey.
                       JOEY
             I know, I know.
                       ALICE
             You seem really flustered.
                       JOEY
Just didn’t sleep well I guess.
Joey walks away from Alice over to the bathroom. He looks at
himself in the mirror for a moment and then washes his face.
After he dries himself he looks back at himself for a second
before Alice begins speaking to him again.

                       ALICE
So do we need to pick Dennis up at
             the airport?
                       JOEY
No, he said he was meeting an old
friend this afternoon and so we
should meet him at the restaurant.
             We’re gonna go to Mondo’s.

                       ALICE
Thanks honey. I’m going out to get
             some groceries. Anything you want
me to pick up for you?

                       JOEY
No, I’m fine. Are you going now?
                       ALICE
Yeah, I’ll see you later honey.

                        JOEY
             Bye-bye.
Alice walks down the stairs and out the door.
                                                      34.

INT. SUPERMARKET - LATE MORNING/AFTERNOON
Alice walks into the supermarket and picks up a basket. At
the front of the store there are little displays for
different impulse purchase items. Alice sees a display for a
new razor and has a flashback of Joey breaking his.

INT. BEDROOM - MORNING
                    JOEY
          Shit.

INT. SUPERMARKET - LATE MORNING/AFTERNOON
Alice takes the razor off the shelf and puts it in her
basket and continues into the store. The store has bright
fluorescent lights and metal rafters painted a plain shade
lining the ceiling. The place seems rather large and cold.
Alice continues on to the frozen foods section and comes
upon strawberry pastries. She again flashes back, this time
to Joey eating these pastries.

INT. KITCHEN - MORNING
Joey sits at the table eating strawberry pastries with the
empty box sitting on the counter beside the toaster. Alice
takes the box flattens it and puts it in the
recycling/garbage.
                    JOEY
               (Satisfied)
          Mmmm...

INT. SUPERMARKET - LATE MORNING/AFTERNOON
Alice takes the frozen pastries off of the shelf and puts
them in her basket. Alice then walks off down the aisle.
Alice comes around the corner of the aisle and spots Dawn
standing ten meters away in a lineup at the checkout stand.
Dawn is wearing the same silver cross that the religious man
in Joey’s dream had and the same scarf that the homeless man
was wearing. Alice has another flashback as she sees Dawn.
                                                      35.

INT. HOME - MORNING
Dawn stands at the window of her house. She looks outside
and watches Joey walk to the bus stop. She sees Dawn walk up
to Joey smiling and starting a conversation. She sees Dawn
giggle at something Joey says.

INT. SUPERMARKET - LATE MORNING/AFTERNOON
Alice walks towards Dawn. She lines up behind her and taps
her on the shoulder.
                      ALICE
          Hey.
                    DAWN

          Hello!
                    ALICE
          I don’t think we’ve met, but I
think you may have met my boyfriend
          Joey?
                    DAWN
Oh! Yes. I met him at a bus stop
the other day. You must be Alice.
          Joey’s told me about you!

Dawn extends her hand and shakes hands with Alice as she
speaks. Alice smiles as Dawn says this. Alice seems
relieved.
                    DAWN
I’m Dawn, nice to meet you.
The cashier begins to run Dawn’s items through the register.
Dawn has a few food items and a coffee mug identical to the
one from the cup holder in Joey’s dream.

                    ALICE
          Nice to meet you too.
                    DAWN
So how long have you and Joey been
          together?
                    ALICE
Hm... It must’ve been almost two
          years by now.

             that long.

                       DAWN
             Well congratulations for staying

Oh, I’m sorry. Joey would never do
that to me, he’s very loyal.
Dawn laughs suddenly and Alice glares at her.

                       ALICE

Dawn points to a magazine on a shelf at the checkout stand.

Alice begins to get money out of her purse.

EXT. SUPERMARKET TO HOME - AFTERNOON
The way from the exit of the supermarket all the way back to
the home of Joey and Alice is shown in fast motion. The view
ends right inside the door facing the door.

INT. HOME - AFTERNOON
Alice walks in the door grocery bags in hand and walks into
the kitchen.

                       ALICE
             Hey Joey, I’m home!
Joey gets up from the computer in their study. He walks out
into the kitchen.

                       JOEY
             Hey.
                       ALICE

Joey is preoccupied writing something on a pad of paper.

                          JOEY
             Hm?
Joey walks up to Alice and gives her a small kiss. Alice
smiles and begins to put groceries away.

Um... I-I have your razor here.
She comes to the razor she hands it to Joey.

                       JOEY
             Oh, thanks honey.
Joey takes the razor and walks upstairs.

INT. MONDO’S - EVENING
Joey and Alice stand inside the foyer of Mondo’s. The
restaurant is dim and seems fairly fancy. There are old
pictures on the walls and fancy looking bottles of wine
decorating the place. It is a fairly small restaurant. Joey
is wearing slacks and a dress shirt and Alice is wearing a
dress. They walk up to the
MAITRE D’ and speak to him.
                       JOEY
Hi, we have a reservation for
             Rayner.
                       MAITRE D’
Ah, yes. The other member of your
             party has already arrived. If
you’ll please follow me to your
             table.
The Maitre d’ picks up two menus and begins walking through
the restaurant towards their table. The restaurant is quite
busy and almost all the tables are full. He leads the way to
their table and Dennis is at the table. The table is right
beside a little booth against the wall of the restaurant. As
Dennis sees them coming he stands up and smiles. Dennis is
dressed in an old suit with no tie and has a fairly full
beard. He has a old scar along his left cheek.

                          DENNIS
             Hey Joey!
Dennis spreads his arms out wide and Joey comes up and they
hug.

                          JOEY
             Hey bro.
                       ALICE
             Hey Dennis.

                          DENNIS
             Hey Alice.
Dennis gives Alice a hug though it seems much more polite
and less loving.

                       DENNIS
It’s great to see you guys, its
             been a while huh.
                       JOEY
Yeah, its good to see you too.
They all take their seats at the table. Alice and Joey sit
beside each other with Dennis on the other side of the
table. They begin to open their menus and peruse them while
they talk.

                       JOEY
             So how was your flight?
                       DENNIS
Oh you know, not too bad. I hate
             flying, I’m a little paranoid I
             guess, but a flight’s a flight.
They take thirty minutes too long
taking off for whatever reason like
usual and then the flight is more
             or less uneventful.
                       ALICE
             Yeah, that’s flying for you.
                        JOEY
Do we want to get some wine or
             something?
                       DENNIS
Um, I was thinking about maybe just
             getting a beer or something.

                       JOEY
Okay, Alice what do you want?
                       ALICE
I think I’ll just have water.

                       DENNIS
I do have a weird story to tell you
             guys though.
                        JOEY
             Oh yeah?
                       DENNIS
So I’m just arriving at the airport
and I’m walking in and I see this
guy standing there with a big sign
saying, "The end is near, all ye
             sinners repent!" This guy is
             calling out all this apocalyptic
crap, and he’s sort of walking
around but he’s got his eyes closed
and seems to be sort of... tripping
             out you know?
                        ALICE
             Weird.
                       JOEY
I think I’m going to get the
             lasagna.
                       DENNIS
So this guy is going crazy, he
             looks like he’s gonna start
frothing at the mouth at any moment
now. And then he sort of backs up
and this taxi comes out of nowhere
and just plows into the guy!

                       ALICE
Oh my god! Was he okay?
                       DENNIS
I don’t know I had to catch my
             plane.

                       ALICE
The guy gets hit by a car and you
don’t even stop to see if he’s
             okay!?

                                                   (CONTINUED)

                       DENNIS
                  (Sheepishly)
Well you know, I was late, and the
             guy was crazy.
                          ALICE
             But still!
                       DENNIS
He predicted the end, I guess he
was right in his own way.
Joey laughs and Dennis starts laughing too.
                       ALICE
             You guys are awful.
                       JOEY
Aw, come on honey. I’m sure he was
             fine...

Alice shakes her head at them as their waitress (SALLY)
walks up. Sally is seemingly young with golden blond hair.
She is very cheerful and quite good looking.
                       SALLY
Hey there guys, My name’s Sally and
             I’ll be your waitress tonight.
                       DENNIS
             Good evening Sally, my name’s
             Dennis.

                       SALLY
Good evening! How are you all doing
             tonight?
             JOEY ALICE
Good. Good.

Dennis looks right into Sally’s eyes.
                       DENNIS
                  (Seriously)
             I’m doing great thanks Sally.

Joey laughs and Alice gives Dennis a funny look. Sally
stands still smiling but looking a little bit confused.
                       SALLY
So can I get you guys anything to
             drink?

Well we would love two beers here.
Dark ale if you have it.
                       SALLY
             Sure.
                       ALICE
And I’ll have just water thanks.
                       SALLY
Alright, well I’ll be back in a
minute with your drinks and we’ll
see if you’re ready to order!
                       DENNIS
             Thank you very much Sally.

Sally smiles and then walks away. Dennis watches her as she
walks away.
                       ALICE
Got a little crush there Dennis?

                       DENNIS
                  (Laughing)
             She’s a pretty girl, what can I
             say?

                       JOEY
Hey, you got one thing right, don’t
give up. You gotta have big dreams,
             even if they’re a little
             far-fetched.

                       ALICE
Yeah, dreams are always good to
             have.
                       DENNIS
             You two are harsh...
                       JOEY
Oh you know we’re just teasing you,
             that’s what siblings are for.

                       DENNIS
Of course, how could I ever forget?
Sally walks up to the table with their drinks on a tray.

Beers for the gentlemen and a water
             for the lady.
Sally hands each of them their drinks.

                       SALLY
Now, have you decided what you’d
             like to eat?
Joey, Alice and Dennis all look between each other for some
sort of assurance that they’re all ready to order. They all
sort of nod .
                       JOEY
             Yeah I think we’re ready.

                       SALLY
Alright, and what are you having
             sir?
                       JOEY
I’ll have the lasagna with a Caesar
salad to start... and... the mashed
             potato on the side.
Sally writes down the order in a little book.
                       SALLY
             Okay. And you Ma’am.
                       ALICE
I’ll have the chicken penne with
             the marinara sauce.

                       SALLY
             Salad and side?
                       ALICE
Um, the garden salad with ranch
dressing and... I guess the potato
             too.
                       SALLY
             And Dennis right?

                       DENNIS
                  (Smiling)
Yes, I’ll have the veal parmigiana
with a feta salad and the rice on
             the side, thanks.

                       DENNIS
             Thanks darling.
Sally laughs and walks away.
                       JOEY
Have you been talking to mom much
             lately?
                       DENNIS
You know, I try to give her a call
now and then. It’s tough though the
             way she’s such a basket-case.

                       JOEY
Yeah, well I guess you’re with
someone for twenty years you get
             sort of attached.

                       DENNIS
Well of course but you know, death
is a part of life, you gotta learn
to move on. Life is for the living.
             I mean obviously you’ll miss
people, but to let it completely
consume your whole life like that.
It’s been over a year now.
                       ALICE
In a way its a testament to the
depth of her love for him.
                       DENNIS
             Well that’s a very romanticized
             view of the situation, but...

                       JOEY
Let’s not get into this. How’s work
             Dennis?
                       DENNIS
Well you know its really good!
Things break, I fix ’em. Sort of
simple, but its interesting to see
how these things all work. The
older stuff is a lot harder to
repair. They’re sort of like a
little puzzle. The newer things are
just a matter of replacing a big

             circuit board usually. Its
             interesting going to different
             people’s houses and just seeing
their home. Some people are so
             friendly. They offer you something
             to drink, coffee whatever. Other
people are SO mad that their stuff
is broken. They don’t really seem
to understand that I don’t make or
             design this stuff.

                       JOEY
             Well they gotta blame someone
             right?
                       ALICE
Hey, at least it pays okay right?
                       DENNIS
Yeah, but I wish it payed more.
                       JOEY
Ha, do you need to win the lottery
             or something?
                       DENNIS
Well of course not, money can’t buy
you happiness right? But it sure
can buy you conveniences and things
to pass the time. Things that
             enable you to be happy.
                       JOEY
             I sure wouldn’t mind having a bit
more money to throw around now and
             then.
                       ALICE
But we have everything we need
             don’t we?
                       JOEY
                  (Chuckling)
Yeah, we have everything we need.

                       DENNIS
             Cheers to that!
Dennis raises his glass and Joey and Alice follow suit. They
do a little toast and then drink.

So, do you like it out on the
             coast?

                       DENNIS
Yeah its a nice city. Real college
town so there’s always lots going
             on.

                       ALICE
Well don’t party TOO hard. When are
you gonna meet a nice girl and
             settle down anyways?
                       JOEY
                  (Mischieviously)
             That depends... Is Sally single?
Dennis laughs and Alice shakes her head.
                       DENNIS
Well yeah, just like everyone else,
but for now things are good so I’ll
just keep on doing what I do. Its
not like I have to quickly find
someone or I’ll die alone. I’m
             young!

Joey raises his glass for another toast.
                       JOEY
To being young and having all the
             time in the world!
They all drink and Joey and Dennis finish their beers. They
see Sally close by and waver her over.
                       DENNIS
Sally darling, could you bring us
             another round? Thanks.
                       SALLY
Sure, I’ll be back in a minute.

Sally walks away towards the kitchen and Dennis smiles.

EXT. OUTSIDE MONDO’S - LATE EVENING
Joey, Alice and Dennis come out the door of the restaurant
laughing and talking quite loudly. Dennis and Joey seem to
have has a fair bit to drink. The street lights shine
brightly along the sidewalk. They walk in and out of shadow.

                  (Loudly and Gestural)
And the dude comes flying at me,
eyes wide screaming, "That was MY
             girlfriend you asshole!" I just
waved my arms saying, "No no, not
me - THAT GUY, not me!". And I ran
right into this crowd of partying
frat boys and lost him. God, what a
             night.

Joey and Alice laugh heavily at his story as they walk home.
Alice holds Joey’s hand as they walk.
                       DENNIS
             It really is disappointing that
             waitress wasn’t single.

                       JOEY
Ha! She was just looking for an
excuse to tell you to fuck off
             politely.

                       DENNIS
             That’s cold. Brothers are supposed
to be supportive, you should have
             my back.
                       ALICE
             He’s right anyways, she wanted
             nothing to do with you.
Joey laughs and gives Dennis a hug.

                       JOEY
             Aw, I love ya anyway.
                       DENNIS
                  (Laughing)
Well it least I have someone who
loves me taking me home. Home,
             where the heart is.
                       ALICE
You’ve had altogether too much to
             drink.

                       DENNIS
                  (Obnoxiously)
You may have had altogether too

                       DENNIS
Okay Alice. Let’s kiss and make up.
                          JOEY
             Hey now...

                       DENNIS
             Just jokin’ around.
Dennis laughs and they arrive at home and walk in the door.

INT. HOME - NIGHT
Joey, Alice and Dennis walk in the door of Joey and Alice’s
house.

                       ALICE
Well I’m going up to bed. Are you
             coming Joey?
                       JOEY
I think I’ll stay up for a while,
me and Dennis need to catch up.
                       ALICE
             Alright. Drink some water.
             Goodnight honey.

Alice gives Joey a kiss and walks up the stairs. Joey and
Dennis go into the kitchen and Dennis sits down. Joey grabs
a couple glasses and fills them with water from the tap. He
gives one to Dennis and then sits down at the table.

                       JOEY
                  (Seriously)
             So, how have you been?
                       DENNIS
You know, its all ups and downs,
but I’ve been okay. Life is okay.
How about you, how are you doing?
                       JOEY
I’ve been okay. Little bit weird
             lately. I’ve had these dreams
lately, but you know how dreams
are, I can’t remember them for long
after. I just remember that I
             dreamed. You know?

                       JOEY
             I don’t know, disastrous?

Dennis laughs and takes a drink. He then leans back and
closes his eyes.
                       JOEY
I think I died in each one, weird
             feeling.
                       DENNIS
Don’t they say that if you die in a
dream you die in real life? Ah
well, we all gotta die someday.

                       JOEY
Ha, you know someone said that same
thing to me just the other day.
                        DENNIS
             Oh yeah?
                       JOEY
This weird girl I met. I met her
while I was waiting for the bus a
few days ago and now I keep running
             into her.
Dennis sits up and looks at Joey with an eyebrow raised.
                        DENNIS
             Oh yeah?

                       JOEY

                        JOEY
             Dawn.

                  (Shaking his head)
             Its bad, fuckin’ bad.
Dennis nods his head in agreement.
                       DENNIS
             So what’re you gonna do?

                       JOEY
Do? Nothing, I can’t do anything,
Alice loves me I love her, I mean
shes amazing to me. She takes care

             You know I don’t know.
Joey pauses for a second looking thoughtful.
                       JOEY
             There’s just SOMETHING about this
girl, I don’t know. She drives me a
little crazy. Its strange, she’s a
             little bit... annoying almost? But
sort of charming at the same time.

                       DENNIS

             Occasionally.
                       DENNIS
Its weird being home again. I
hadn’t realized how much I missed
the place. Its hard to make a new
             place your HOME really.
                       JOEY
Yeah. I sort of feel stuck here.
Even if I had some other place to
go I think I’d miss my home. You
             just get used to things.
                       DENNIS
             Yeah, traditions. They’re good for
some things but sometimes you gotta
break them to love your life the
way you need to... or want to.
                       JOEY
             Mhm.

Joey and Dennis sit in silence together for a few moments
both seemingly lost in thought.
                       JOEY
Do you think about Dad alot?

                       DENNIS
I try not to, but yeah sometimes I

                       JOEY
Its hard to get used to him not
being around. And with mom moving
             after he passed... Its just
             different here.
                       DENNIS
Yeah, but I think it was good for
             her. She couldn’t stop thinking
about it here. She needed a change.

I think she should’ve stayed, at

             or something.

                       DENNIS
Maybe... Do you remember when Dad
used to make us work in the yard
for hours and then made a pie and

                       JOEY

             Forced work and reward. God

She didn’t really seem to be able
to get the hang of making the
pastry and so she got fustrated and
             doesn’t try anymore.

                          DENNIS
             Goodnight.
Joey walks up the stairs slowly. There is no light on in the
top floor and it gets darker and darker as he climbs the
stairs. As he reaches the last few steps he can’t be seen at
all, but the sound of the stairs can still be heard. All of
a sudden the sound is gone and the room starts to light up
and he stands in a church.

INT. CHURCH - MORNING

Joey walks up the stairs of a church. There seems to be no
sound coming from the church and all that can be heard is
the sound of a heart beating slowly and light slow
breathing. The church has rows of pews and stained glass
windows along the sides. At the front of the church there is
a cross. The church seems old and is built of stone. As Joey
gets to the top of the steps he is standing in the entrance
to the sanctuary. He stands in the entrance and looks
around, up at the ceiling and at the cross. The church has
many people sitting at the pews with their heads bowed
praying. There is a priest at the front of the church
standing at the pulpit also with his head bowed. The church
roof is then shown closer and closer until it fades.

INT. HINDU HOME - NOON

Joey stands in the doorway of a small Hindu home. The family
inside is sitting down performing a traditional Puja ritual.
The family marks their foreheads and then light incense. The
incense burns and the smoke from it slowly drifts up towards
the ceiling. The only sound heard is still a heart beating
slowly and light slow breathing. The image of the incense
fades but the sound of the heart and breathing can still be
heard.

INT. BUDDHIST TEMPLE - AFTERNOON

A candle sits on a small old wooden table. It burns and the
flame flickers. The sound of the heart and breathing is
heard and the candle burns slowly. The view is expanded to
show a Buddhist woman sitting cross-legged in front of the
candle. The sound of breathing and a heart beating matches
the breathing of the woman. Her breathing is slow and
deliberate and her chest rises up and down. She has her eyes

closed and looks very calm. After meditating for a little
while she slowly leans her head backwards with her eyes
still closed facing the ceiling. The view rises to
eventually show the ceiling closer and closer.

EXT. FIELDS - SUNSET
Joey stands at the side of a field. In the field there are
many mats all aligned on the ground facing towards the
sunset. There are many Muslims each kneeling on one of the
many mats, they are all bowing down praying (Salat). The
only sound heard is that of the heart beating and light
breathing still. The bowing of the people praying matches
the rhythm of the breathing and heartbeat. When they are
done they stand up and pick up their mats. One of the men
close to Joey shakes his mat off after picking it up. The
dust shakes off his mat and slowly floats up towards the sky
until it fades.

INT. CHURCH - EVENING

A man walks into an empty catholic cathedral. There are
candles burning at the front of the church. The man walks to
the front of a church and steps into a confessional. The man
kneels down and crosses himself. It is still silent save the
heartbeat and breathing. The mean speaks but the sound of
his voice is not heard, only the movement of his mouth is
seen.
                       SINNER
                  (Silently)
Bless me father for I have sinned.

The priest is shown on the other side of the confessional
responding. The confessional is anonymous and the words are
not heard.
                        PRIEST
How long has it been since you last
             confessed?
                       SINNER
I don’t know father, too long, too
             long.

The sinner bows his head in sorrow as he continues to speak
his sins to the priest. The sinner finishes explaining his
sins.

These are my sins, and for them I
             am sorry.
                       PRIEST
I absolve you from your sins, in
the name of the Father, and of the
Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
Once the man finishes his confession he stands up slowly.
The view follows from his knees where he knelt and slowly
upwards to the man looking upwards toward the ceiling and
slowly on upwards until it fades.

EXT. FIELD - NIGHT

Joey stands in the middle of a prairie field. The field is
expansive and empty and the stars can be seen shining in the
sky. The air is cold and his breath can be seen in the air.
The sight of his breath coincides with the sound of light
slow breathing and his heartbeat is also heard. All else is
silent. Joey puts his palms together as if to pray and bows
his head. He pauses this way with his eyes close for a
second his breath still floating through the air. He then
raises his head and opens his eyes looking towards the sky.
He presses his hands towards his face and forehead still
with his palms together praying. The view follows his hands
and head upwards looking where he is looking up into the
sky. The stars shine as the view moves higher and higher
into the sky. A bright star is focused upon as if his breath
was rising up to it. Then right in the middle of one of the
heartbeats a loud snapping of fingers is heard and
everything goes silent and black.

INT. BEDROOM - MORNING
Joey wakes up suddenly and gasps a large breath. The sun has
already risen and can be seen glowing through the curtains.
Alice is already up and out of bed. Joey sits for a few
moments staring at the ceiling before he gets out of bed.

INT. KITCHEN - MORNING

Alice and Dennis sit in the kitchen together both eating
bowls of cereal. They are both wearing pajamas and reading
different parts of the newspaper. Joey comes walking down
the stairs and is also in pajamas and looks tired.

                       ALICE
You look tired, did you not sleep
             well?
                       JOEY
I slept okay... just weird dreams
             again.

                        DENNIS
             What of?
                       JOEY
There was all sorts of weird
             religious ceremonies and stuff... I
don’t remember that well. At the
end it sounded like someone snapped
             their fingers and then everything
sort of disappeared and when I woke
up I was gasping for air.

                       ALICE
             That’s strange.
                       DENNIS
             You should see a therapist.

                       JOEY
             Ha, I’m fine.
                       ALICE
Want some breakfast? We were just
             having cereal.
                        JOEY
             Sure.

Alice gets up and takes the cereal out of the cupboard. Just
as she grabs it the phone rings. She stops and picks it up.
                        ALICE
             Hello?

She pauses for a second while the other person speaks. As
the person speaks she turns and looks over at Joey. Joey
shakes his head mouthing the word "no!".
                       ALICE
Sure, he’s right here, just a
             second.
Alice hands the phone to Joey and mouths "Its for you." Joey
frowns at her and takes the phone.

                       JOEY
             Hello? Mhm.
As the conversation goes on Joey seems less and less happy.
                       JOEY
Yeah. I see... Today? Alright I
             guess. Mhm. See you then.
Joey hangs up the phone and sighs.
                       ALICE
             What’s wrong?
                       JOEY
I’ve got to go in to work.
Joey turns to Alice and glares at her slightly.

                       ALICE
             I’m sorry! Why?
                       JOEY
I don’t know some guy had some
             emergency or something. Ugh. I’m
             sorry Dennis.
                       DENNIS
It’s okay bro, I’ll still be here
             when you’re back.
Joey laughs and shakes his head. He slowly begins to get up
and walk upstairs.
                       JOEY
I better go get dressed. You guys
will find something to do today
             right?
                       ALICE
             Yeah, sure.

                       DENNIS
             Don’t worry.

Joey disappears up the top of the stairs and Alice and
Dennis look at each other slightly stunned.

EXT. BUS STOP - MORNING

Joey stands at the bus stop waiting for the bus to work. He
is wearing a suit and tie. He taps his foot and seems
agitated. He has a very unhappy expression on his face. He
looks down at his watch, sighs, and then begins to pace back
and forth at the bus stop. As he is pacing he sees Dawn
skipping towards him. Joey shakes his head and stands still.

                          DAWN
             Hey Joey!
                       JOEY
                  (Tiredly)
             Hey Dawn.
                       DAWN
             What’s wrong!
                       JOEY
I have to go in to work on the
weekend and my brother’s in town
             and I’m frustrated.
                          DAWN
             I’m sorry!
                       JOEY
             So it goes...
Dawn frowns and then grabs Joey giving him a big hug.

                       DAWN
             Feel better!
Joey looks awkward at first as she hugs him but then smiles
a little.

                          JOEY
             Thanks.
                       DAWN
             Anytime friend!

Joey turns and looks down the road to see if the bus is
coming yet.

                  (Seriously)
             Meet me for lunch.
                       JOEY
             Lunch?
                       DAWN
Yeah, meet me at Capricio’s at
             12:30 okay?

                       JOEY
             Uh, I guess so, sure.
                       DAWN
                  (Hurt)
Well if you don’t want to...

                       JOEY
No no, I do, I’ll see you there.
                       DAWN
                  (Happily)
             Perfect. See ya then!
As she tells him this she pokes him in the chest and then
skips off in the direction the bus comes from. Joey watches
her skip away.

INT. WORK - MORNING
Joey sits in a large room at a table with a few of his
co-workers. They are all sitting and talking but none of
their voices can be heard. Joey looks up at the clock and
then continues talking. He finishes his thought and then
again looks up at the clock. Each time Joey looks up at the
clock he hears the sound of Dawn saying "12:30 okay?" in his
mind. Joey then turns and looks out the window and in his
mind hears ’at Capricio’s’. Joey rubs his eyes with his hand
and responds to something his co-worker was saying. His
co-worker nods and then writes something down. Joey looks up
at the clock again. He again hears Dawn saying, "12:30
okay?". He then looks up at the ceiling and runs his hand
through his hair.

INT. CAPRICIO’S - EARLY AFTERNOON
Joey and Dawn sit at a small table in the restaurant. The
walls of the restaurant are decorated with paintings and
some tapestry type items. These tapestries are identical to
the prayer mats from Joey’s dream. They are both smiling and

are eating their dessert. Dawn is eating a piece of
chocolate cake that looks very moist and has chocolate
icing. Joey is eating a bowl of ice cream.

                       DAWN
You have to try this. It’s
             absolutely scrumptious.
                       JOEY
                  (Laughing)
             Scrumptious huh?
                       DAWN
             ABSOLUTELY scrumptious.

Dawn takes a piece of cake with her fork and pushes it right
at Joey’s mouth. Joey already has ice cream in his mouth and
he sticks his hand up in the way for a minute while he
swallows.
                        JOEY
             Okay.
Joey opens his mouth and Dawn puts the cake in. Joey chews
it a little and closes his eyes in enjoyment.
                       JOEY
             Mm... That is scrumptious.
                        DAWN
             Told ya.

Joey laughs and then goes back to eating his ice cream. A
waitress then walks up. The waitress is the same woman as
the budhist woman from Joey’s dream, but with a different
hair style and color, and with make-up and waitress’s
clothes. Joey looks at her as if trying to figure out where
he’s seen her before but can’t seem to place her.

                       WAITRESS
             And how’s the dessert?
                       DAWN
             Scrumptious!

                       JOEY
             Its great, thanks.
                        WAITRESS
             Good.

The waitress walks off and Dawn takes another big bite of
her cake. She closes her eyes to enjoy it.

                       JOEY
So I’m guessing chocolate cake is
             your favorite dessert?
                        DAWN
             Just about. What’s yours, ice
             cream? Ha.

                       JOEY
                  (Laughing)
I do love ice cream... But I think
my favorite is probably Angel Food
             Cake... With strawberries.

                       DAWN
             Sounds delectable.
                        JOEY
You’re all about the fancy words
             today huh?
                       DAWN
             Eloquence elects emanation!
                       JOEY
             Well aren’t you precocious.
Dawn suddenly gives Joey a very serious look.
                        DAWN
             Kiss me.

                       JOEY
                  (Surprised)
             What?!

Dawn reaches across the table and grabs Joey’s tie and pulls
him towards her. Joey resists and tries to pull away at
first but then she puts her lips to his and he stops pulling
away. They kiss for a few seconds and then Dawn pulls back
and stares at him.

                       DAWN
             Yup. I thought so.
                       JOEY
                  (Confused)
             You thought what?

Thought I liked you, and I do. And
             you like me too.
                       JOEY
             I shouldn’t be doing this, I have a
             girlfriend, I love her.
Dawn laughs and leans back in her chair.
                       DAWN
So quick to regret. Don’t you ever
             just let go?
                       JOEY
It isn’t always so simple as just
             letting go.

                       DAWN
In the words of my favorite poet,
"Some people never go crazy. What
             truly terrible lives they must
             lead."

Joey looks distressed and flustered.
                       JOEY
             I can’t. I need to go, I’m sorry.

                       DAWN
Okay, but I’ll see you soon. When
             you realize.
                       JOEY
             You are fucking insane.

Joey frowns at Dawn and puts some money down on the table.
He then takes his jacket from his chair and walks away. Dawn
watches him go with a smile on her face. Once Joey is out
the door she takes another big bite of her cake and closes
her eyes in enjoyment.

INT. WORK - AFTERNOON
Joey sits back at the same table at work. He is again
discussing things with his co-workers. None of it is
audible. He looks less than interested in the discussion. He
leans back in his chair while two of his other co-workers
discuss something. He stares up at the ceiling and flashes
of lunch come to him.
                                                      63.

INT. CAPRICIO’S - EARLY AFTERNOON
Dawn reaches across the table and grabs Joey’s tie and pulls
him towards her.

INT. WORK - AFTERNOON
Joey remembers the look in her eyes right before they
kissed. He then realizes one of his co-workers is trying to
speak to him and he sits up straight and pays attention to
what he is saying. He nods and then writes something more
down in a notebook. As he is writing he again remembers part
of his time at the restaurant.

Dawn takes another big bite of her cake. She closes her eyes

          Mm Mm!

INT. WORK - AFTERNOON
Joey gets a morose look on his face and again nods and
writes something down. The pen writing on the paper becomes
slower and slower until it takes a few seconds just to write
one letter and then it stops. Joey is then done work and is
walking out of the room. He waves goodbye to his co-workers
and begins to walk out of the building. The building is
fairly empty and he doesn’t see anyone on his way to the
doors. The whole time he is walking he is watching the
ground and has a very thoughtful expression on his face. The
lights inside the building are not very bright and as he
comes to the door the light can be seen shining through
around the edges of the door. He opens the door and walks
out and all that can be seen is bright light.

INT. DOCTOR’S OFFICE - DAYTIME
Joey lies on a table and at first all that is seen is the
bright light shining down on him. The light dims a little
and Joey is shown lying on a stainless steal table in a very
clean empty room. He is wearing a hospital gown. Joey looks
around the room confused. He sits up on the table and
squints in the direction of the light. he looks around the
room and sees a door. Beside the door is a light switch and
he gets up and tries to turn off the light, he flicks the

forth a few times but still the light won’t turn off. Joey
looks around the room again with a confused expression. The
door opens and a doctor walks in. The man’s face is covered
by a white cloth and his hair is covered by a tight white
cap. He is dressed all in white and has on tight plastic
gloves.
                       DOCTOR
             Please sit down.
Joey moves towards the table and slowly sits down. The
doctor rolls over a tray with a needle, a bottle of some
sort of vaccine/medicine, rubbing alcohol, a rubber tube and
cotton on it. He sits down on a stool and then he takes the
needle and puts it into the bottle and measures out some of
the liquid.
                       JOEY
             What is that?

                       DOCTOR
Don’t worry, this will only sting
             for a second.
Joey squints and leans toward the bottle trying to figure
out what it is. He tries to read the label but the small
writing on it is blurry and he can’t make it out. The doctor
takes the rubbing alcohol and wets a piece of cotton with
it. He then grabs Joey’s arm and wipes a spot down near
Joey’s elbow.

                       DOCTOR
Just a little poke, no big deal.
                       JOEY
             What are you giving me?

                       DOCTOR
             Don’t worry son, I’m a doctor. I
trained for years to know what I’m
             doing.
                       JOEY
                  (Distressed)
             That’s fine I trust you, but I’d
like to know what it is!
                       DOCTOR
             Don’t worry, It’ll only hurt for a
moment. It’s important for you to
have this, the rest didn’t and now
             they’re gone.

                  (Almost hysterical)
             What are you talking about?

                       DOCTOR
Don’t worry, its just like a pin
prick. The disease took them, but
it won’t take you. You can live it
out, just about forever really. By
             comparison at least.
                       JOEY
                  (Hysterical)
             Everyone is dead?!

                       DOCTOR
Oh there are a few left. I’m here
             still.
The doctor pulls one of his gloves down slightly to look at
his watch. The numbers are blurred and the time is
unreadable.
                       DOCTOR
Hm, almost time though, I had
better give you this shot. Don’t
             worry, it shouldn’t hurt much.

The doctor takes the needle and checks it to make sure the
amount is correct. He then grabs Joey’s arm again and ties
the rubber tubing around Joey’s upper arm.

                       DOCTOR
             Please clench your fist.
Joey clenches his fist very tightly and the veins on his
hand become very visible. The doctor holds his arm and
brings the needle close to his elbow where he wiped with
rubbing alcohol.
                       DOCTOR
It will only hurt for a second.
The doctor pushes the needle into Joey’s arm and injects him
with the fluid. He takes off the rubber tubing and he then
swabs the arm again and puts a band-aid on it.
                       DOCTOR
Well, hold that for a minute and
             that should do it.

The doctor gets up from where he was sitting and walks to

moment.

                       DOCTOR
Now that didn’t hurt did it?

The doctor walks out the door and the door slowly swings
shut behind him. He says one last thing as he’s walking
away.
                       DOCTOR
Cross your fingers and hope you’re
             alive!
Joey clenches and then relaxes his fist a few times. He
slowly stands up and then walks to the door and opens it. It
is dark outside and it takes his eyes a moment to adjust.

EXT. STREET - NIGHT
Joey steps outside. He is on a dark street in an unknown
place. There are street lights providing the only light. The
sky is dark and the moon and the stars are not showing. Joey
looks around and the street seems very empty. He sees a dark
mass down the street a little ways. He begins to walk
towards it. As he walks he seems to realize he is cold and
he shivers. He gets closer to the dark mass and begins to
make out what it is. The doctor lies in the street unmoving.
He doesn’t appear to be breathing. Joey walks right up to
him and puts his hand on his shoulder. The doctor is
kneeling bent over as if he is praying. Joey pushes on his
shoulder and the doctor rolls over. His eyes are wide and
staring out into space. His skin is cold and blue. Joey
gasps and jumps back frightened. After a moment Joey begins
to walk down the street again. He looks around trying to see
someone alive.
                       JOEY
Hello? Anyone? Can anyone hear me?

He continues to walk down the street and doesn’t see or hear
anyone. Joey eventually walks far enough down the road that
he comes to a bridge over a large intersection. He looks
down at the road and sees nobody and no cars driving. He
stares out down the road at the emptiness. He has a
flashback to a huge amount of cars driving around at night.
He sees their lights making paths along the road. He then
sees it empty again. In the distance he sees a car driving
down the wrong side of the road. He hears the quiet sound of
the car’s engine getting louder as the car approaches. He
stands sort of stunned for a moment on the bridge and then
suddenly starts running towards the side of the bridge. He
runs all the way to the end and the car gets closer and
closer as he runs. Once he gets to the end of the bridge he
runs down the hill towards the road waving his arms at the
car. The car is now very close to passing him.

                          JOEY
             HEY! STOP!
Joey continues to run down the hill waving his arms and
yelling at the car to stop.

                       JOEY
             WAIT! STOP! HEY!
Joey runs out into the road just as the car is coming to
where he is. The car slams on its brakes and stops near him.
From where Joey is standing he can’t see into the car at
all. He runs up to the window and looks inside. Inside the
car sits Dennis at the wheel.
                       DENNIS
             Hey bro! Hop in!

                       JOEY
                  (Relieved)
Dennis! Holy shit what is going on?
                       DENNIS
Oh well you know, the disease took
             most of them.
                          JOEY
                     (Confused)
             What?

                       DENNIS
It was spread by the bugs they
said, but nobody really knows I
think. Who knows, who cares? It
             doesn’t matter now.

                       JOEY
             So everybody is dead?
                       DENNIS
             Well not everyone... Hell, I’m
still here. But yeah, for the most
part they are. The doctors couldn’t
             seem to figure it out.
                       JOEY
This strange doctor just gave me a
shot. Come to think of it...
Joey has a flashback to when he was in the room when the
doctor walked in. In his memory of the incident the doctor’s
face was not covered.

                       JOEY
It was dad. Dad was the doctor.
                       DENNIS
             Maybe you’ll live forever then?

                       JOEY
                  (Confused)
             Why would I live forever?
                       DENNIS
It would be pretty empty with
everyone else gone I think. Most
             things aren’t really that fun
             alone.
                       JOEY
             No... they’re not. I don’t want to
live alone. What about you? Are you
             dying?
                       DENNIS
Well we’re all dying buddy. We all
             die. I’m dying soon I guess, that’s
what I was told at least.
                       JOEY
Shit shit shit. You can’t die, you
can’t leave me here. Dad died, and
             now you too?
                       DENNIS
No point worrying over things you
can’t change bro. But its time to
             drive. Let’s go.
Dennis puts the car in drive and steps on the gas slowly.
They begin to move down the road.
                       JOEY
             Where are we going?
                       DENNIS
Who knows? It’s fun driving around
here when its so empty. Right way,
wrong way, who cares? You can go
             wherever you want.
Dennis slowly swerves back and forth across the lanes of the
road speeding up. He then gets going quite fast and heads
straight down the road right in the middle of two lanes.
They eventually come to a fairly large intersection. As they
approach the intersection they slow down. They begin to

would normally be illegal.
                       JOEY
             So this is it?

                       DENNIS
             You know, its exhilarating the
freedom you get when you know
you’re about to die. You can do
             whatever the fuck you want.

                       JOEY
             That’s morbid.
                       DENNIS
It is true uninhibited freedom. The
             freest kind.
Dennis smiles and drives up onto the median of the road.
                       DENNIS
There are no more boundaries there
are no more worries. I am free from
this cage I am free I am FREE.
                       JOEY
I don’t want to die here alone.
             Don’t leave me alone.

                        DENNIS
Its only human to be alone
             sometimes.
                        JOEY
Lots of horrible things are only
             human.
                       DENNIS
                  (Laughing)
Yes, I guess so. You need to
             lighten up brother.
                       JOEY
How can you be so happy when you’re
             about to die?

                       DENNIS
What else is there to be? Everyone
is sad that they’re growing up,
             they’re sad they’re getting old...

might as well enjoy every last
             aging, dying moment.
                       JOEY
I guess its hard to argue with that
             logic...
                       DENNIS
So sit back and enjoy the ride.

Dennis puts the pedal to the floor and speeds down the road.
There is nobody outside as they drive down the road. They
begin to near the edge of the city. As they reach the city
limits Dennis takes his foot off the gas and turns the car
off. They coast down the road with a strange silence. Joey
stares out the window into the wild. The car eventually
comes to a stop outside the city somewhere. Dennis gets out
and stretches.
                       DENNIS
Here we are, this looks like a good
             place.

Joey also gets out of the car and looks around.
                       JOEY
             A good place for what?

                       DENNIS
             For the end.
                       JOEY
             Why?

                       DENNIS
Through nature we come into the
world and through nature we shall
             leave?

                       JOEY
             Hm.
Joey and Dennis walk to the hood of the car and lean/sit
against it.

                       JOEY

You really have no idea do you? You
just go around talking like you
know what’s going on and acting all
confident, but really you have no

             dark as the next guy.
                       DENNIS
             Heh. You got that right.
                       JOEY
What a way for us to go.
                       DENNIS
I guess so. What do you think, was
             it worth it?

                       JOEY
             Was what worth it?
                       DENNIS
Life, was it worth living? All of
             this civilization worth building?

Dennis and Joey look back towards the city where a sparse
few lights can still be seen shining in the distance.
                       JOEY
Living sure, but all that? I don’t
know. Seems like a bit of a waste
of time? But then again, who
could’ve known it would all be over
             so soon?

                       DENNIS
             So it goes.
Dennis gets up and walks around to the back of the car and
opens the trunk. He pulls out a bottle of scotch and a
couple of glasses, shuts the trunk, and then walks back to
the front and sits down again beside Joey. He opens the
bottle and fills the glasses. He then seals it and puts it
down. He takes one glass and hands it to Joey and then the
other for himself.

Joey and Dennis clink their glasses together and then take a

                       DENNIS
So, how did it go with Dawn?

you go out for lunch with her?
                       JOEY
             I don’t know why.

Joey and Dennis finish their drinks so Dennis picks up the
bottle and fills up their glasses again.
                       DENNIS
What do you think, we gonna finish

Dennis points to the bottle of scotch.

Dennis holds his arms out wide as if pointing to the sky and

edge of the universe. The edge of
the end, the edge of a precipice.
In a few short moments we’re all
going over... but what is time
             right before the end anyways?
                       JOEY

                       DENNIS
             Ha, nevermind.
Dennis finishes off his glass and pours himself another.
Joey finishes his too as Dennis is pouring. Dennis then
pours the last of the bottle into Joey’s glass. He then
holds his glass up and looks at the liquid inside.

                       DENNIS
             And here comes the end.
Dennis takes a large gulp of the scotch.

Dennis raises his glass in a toast again and Joey follows

Well, its been fun. Good luck.
Dennis takes the empty scotch bottle in hand and tosses it
high into the sky. The bottle moves in slow motion spinning
up and the arcing down towards the ground. As the bottle
flies Dennis slowly slides off the hood towards the ground
dead. The bottle slowly falls to the ground at the same time
as Dennis. The bottle hits the ground and smashes into many

                       JOEY
Heh. Because we drank enough last
             night.

                       DENNIS
             That we did.
                       JOEY
Ugh, I hate going to work hungover.
You’re a shitty influence on me you
             know.
                       DENNIS
             Monday morning blues huh.

                         JOEY
             Guess so.
Joey gets up and takes a box of cereal from a shelf and the
milk from the fridge. He places them on the table and grabs
a bowl and spoon. He sits down again and pours himself a
bowl of cereal.
                       JOEY
So how long are you staying in
             town?

                       DENNIS
Well... I got an email from work...
Some guy had a family emegency of
some sort and I guess people can’t
             survive without their boob-tube for
             a couple days.
Joey laughs for a second before getting serious.
                       JOEY
Well that’s too bad, it was good
having you here. We should try and
             do this more often.
                       DENNIS
Yeah, for sure Joey. Good luck
figuring your shit out with that
             girl.
                       JOEY
Ha, thanks... It really is tough
you know. She kissed me yesterday.

                       DENNIS
                  (Surprised)
             Oh? What happened?

                       JOEY
She just grabbed me and pulled me
towards her, I was shocked and I
             didn’t know what to do.

                         DENNIS
             Wow...
                       JOEY
I stormed out of the restaurant
after yelling at her, but god when
she kissed me... I don’t know
something inside of me went crazy.
I was shaking as I walked out. That
             girl just drives me mad.
                       DENNIS
I don’t know what to tell you.
                       JOEY
It’s okay. It’s my problem to
             figure out.

                       DENNIS
                  (Seriously)
I know... I love you man. Whatever
you decide to do, I won’t hold it
             against you.

                       JOEY
Thanks, I love you too bro.
                       DENNIS
I’m gonna go pack up. Bye.

                         JOEY
             See ya.

EXT. PARKING LOT - MORNING

Joey steps off the bus at work. He is dressed in a suit and
is clean shaven but he has slight dark circles under his
eyes and looks quite tired. He walks towards the door of his
work building where he sees Dawn sitting on a bench.

                         DAWN
             Hey Joey.
                       JOEY
What the fuck are you doing here?
             Are you stalking me?

                                                       (CONTINUED)

                       DAWN
                  (Seriously)
I wanted to apologize. I’m sorry
for being so forward at lunch
yesterday. I didn’t mean to upset
             you.
                        JOEY
             Alright.
                       DAWN
             That’s all I came to say... I’ll
             see you around.
                       JOEY
             Okay... Thanks I guess.

                       DAWN
             Bye-bye Joey.
Dawn walks away and Joey watches her and then shakes his
head as he turns and walks into his work building.

INT. WORK - HALLS - MORNING
As Joey walks in the door time slows down and his movements
are in slow motion. He walks through the halls of his work
building politely greeting everyone he passes. The whole
sequence is in slow motion.

INT. WORK - OFFICE - MORNING

Joey sits at his computer in his office and his fingers are
shown moving over his keyboard in slow motion. The clock is
shown moving very slowly and then Joey yawns widely and
still in slow motion. He looks back at the clock and then
walks out the door.

INT. WORK - BREAK ROOM - MORNING
Joey stands at a table pouring himself a cup of coffee. The
coffee pours in slow motion and the stream can be seen as it
slowly approaches the cup. The cup fills and then Joey adds
a small amount of cream and sugar. He stirs the cup still in
slow motion and then begins to drink. As he drinks the
coffee everything begins to speed up again. He drinks his
coffee and watches the anchors filming their news show. By
the time he finishes the last of his coffee there is no more
slow motion. As he has the last sip and puts down his cup
Hank walks over to the table.

                       HANK
             Hey Joey, how’s it going?
                       JOEY
Oh you know, it goes, things are
             alright.

                         HANK
             Mhm.
Hank begins to pour himself some coffee and take a bite out
of a doughnut.
                       JOEY
             How are things for you?
                       HANK
Pretty good actually, I may be up
for a promotion pretty soon, get
some more time on the screen.
                         JOEY
             Congrats.

                       HANK
Thanks, I’m looking forward to it.
                       JOEY
Well good luck with that, I better
get back to work. I’ll look out for
you next time I watch the news.
                       HANK
                  (Laughing)
             Cool. I’ll see ya around.

Joey walks off back towards his office. He walks toward the
hall and then around the corner.

INT. WORK - HALLS/OFFICE - LATE MORNING
Joey walks down the hall towards the door to his office and
he hears the phone ringing. He realizes that it is the phone
in his office and he runs to go pick it up. He gets into his
office and grabs the phone off the hook.

                       JOEY
                  (Rushed)
             Hello?

             Hi Joseph, its mom.
                        JOEY
             Hey mom.

                       MOM
             How are you Joseph?
                       JOEY
I’m doing okay... How are you?

                       MOM
I miss him Joey, I miss your father
             a lot.
                       JOEY
I know mom, I do too.
                       MOM
                  (Distressed)
They said it would get easier, it
isn’t getting any easier. Every day
I shake and I cry and I MISS HIM
             Joey, I miss him.
                       JOEY
             I’m sorry mom.

                       MOM
             It isn’t your fault.
                       JOEY
I know, I just mean for you, I’m
             sorry you feel this way.

                       MOM
             How do you do it?
                        JOEY
             Do what?
                       MOM
How do you just keep on living,
             like nothing ever happened?

                       JOEY
             It isn’t like nothing ever
happened... Its just you gotta keep
going. I miss him, but I need to
             live my life too.

I can’t live it without him.
                       JOEY
Aw, come on mom, it will get
             better, give it time.

                       MOM
             There was just something about
being around him, whenever I was in
the same room as him I felt so
ALIVE. With him around it was just
             better... fun, exciting. I never
felt like that with anyone else...
             Maybe you only get one?
                       JOEY
             I’m sorry mom.
                       MOM
Never let go of somebody like that
             Joey.

                       JOEY
                  (Awkwardly)
             Okay mom...
A man stands at the door of Joey’s open office and knocks on
the door. Joey looks up and raises a finger as if to say
just one second.
                       JOEY
Mom I’m sorry I gotta go.
                       MOM
Alright, I love you so much.
                       JOEY
             Love you too, bye.

Joey hangs up the phone quickly and looks up to the man
standing at the door.
                       JOEY
             Yeah?

                       MAN
Hey Joey, sorry to interrupt I just
             heard about this story...
                                                      81.

EXT. OUTSIDE WORK - LATE AFTERNOON
Joey steps out the door of his work building and begins
walking towards the bus stop. It is a sunny day, but the
wind is blowing quite strongly. On a bench near the door of
his work building sits Dawn. After he takes a few steps
towards the street she calls out.
                    DAWN
          Joey!

Joey turns around surprised.
                    JOEY
               (Stunned)
          Hey.. Dawn.

                    DAWN
I felt the need to come find you.
                    JOEY
          Okay... how come?

                    DAWN
I wanted to have dinner with you.
                    JOEY
          Well...

Joey looks around and has a very conflicted expression on
his face. He then turns and looks right at Dawn. She has big
puppy eyes and looks right back at him.
                    DAWN
          Pleeeease...

                    JOEY
               (Laughing)
How can I say no to that? Come on,
we can make something at my house I
          guess...
Joey looks around guiltily for a second as they begin to
walk towards the street.

INT. HOME - KITCHEN - EVENING
Joey and Dawn are in the kitchen of Joey’s house. Dawn sits
at the table and Joey stands at the stove with a large dish
in his hands. He opens the oven and puts the dish in.

                       JOEY
Casserole... The only thing I know
             how to make well.

                       DAWN
                  (Laughing)
             Fine by me.
Joey takes a kitchen timer and winds it up to 30 minutes.
The timer begins to tick. He then looks at the clock and it
is 5:30.

EXT. OUTSIDE JAPANESE CLASS - EVENING

The ticking of the kitchen timer can still be heard quietly
in the background. Alice walks up to a community center
building and pulls on the handle of the door. The door
doesn’t open and she then notices a sign taped to the door.
"Beginner’s Japanese 101 is canceled today. Mrs. Yamamoto is
ill. Classes should resume next week and we are very sorry
for the short notice." Alice frowns and sighs and then turns
around and begins to walk back towards home.

INT. HOME - KITCHEN - EVENING

The kitchen timer continues to tick as Joey and Dawn talk.
                       JOEY
You need to be out of here by
7:30... Alice will be home then.

                        DAWN
                  (Mischievous)
             We’ll see.
Joey looks frustrated and guilty for a moment and then turns
to Dawn.
                       JOEY
Can I get you something to drink?
                       DAWN
             Sure.
                       JOEY
             Let’s see what we have...
Joey walks to the cupboard and opens it up. There are a few
bottles but most of them are basically empty. The only
bottles that aren’t empty are a bottle of scotch and a
bottle of tequila.

                                                  (CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: 83.

                       JOEY
             Hm. I guess we’ve been drinking a
lot lately. We got scotch or
             tequila. Ha.

                       DAWN
                  (Happily)
Well we better start with the
             scotch then!
                       JOEY
                  (Laughing)
             I guess we better.

EXT. WALKING HOME - EVENING

Alice walks along the sidewalk towards her home. The kitchen
timer can be heard getting slightly louder as the time
passes. The wind blows very hard and her hair flies wildly
around her face.

INT. HOME - KITCHEN - EVENING
Joey takes out the bottle of scotch and pours himself and
Dawn each a glass. The timer keeps ticking. The bottle is
the same as the one from Joey’s dream. Joey takes a sip of
his scotch and Dawn takes a large gulp. Dawn stands up and
walks over to Joey.
                       DAWN
             You’re a sweet boy Joey.

                         JOEY
                    (Laughing)
             Boy?
                       DAWN
                  (Smirking)
If you’re a man then you better
             prove it to me.
Joey and Dawn stare at eachother for a moment and then Joey
grabs Dawn and kisses her. The kiss for a little while and
then Joey pulls back and stares into Dawn’s eyes. Joey grabs
Dawn’s hand and pulls her to come up the stairs with him.
Dawn grabs her purse and as she does she knocks the bottle
of scotch onto the floor and it rolls near to the door. She
then follows him up the stairs.
                                                      84.

EXT. WALKING HOME - EVENING
Alice continues to walk along the sidewalk as the timer
continues to tick and get slightly louder as time passes.
She rounds a street-corner and continues on her way.

INT. BEDROOM - EVENING
Joey and Dawn continue kissing standing at the end of the
bed. The kitchen timer can still be heard and the sound gets
slightly louder still. Dawn pushes Joey down onto the bed
and climbs on top of him and continues to kiss him.

EXT. WALKING HOME - EVENING

Alice walks along and the sound of the kitchen timer can be
heard still getting louder little by little. Alice walks by
the theater where Joey heard Giovanni speak and she
continues to walk home.

INT. AIRPLANE - EVENING
Dennis sits in a seat on a crowded airplane flying through
the air. The kitchen timer still is heard ticking in the
background. There is an old man next to him sleeping and a
young woman beside him. The young woman and him are talking
and both smiling and laughing when the plane shakes.
                    PILOT
We’re just running into a bit of
turbulence here so I’m turning on
the seat-belt light. We would ask
that you please remain in your
          seats until we’re through this
          rough patch thanks.
Dennis looks at the young woman next to him and smiles as he
buckles up his seat-belt.
                    DENNIS
               (Nervously)
Nothing like a good bit of
turbulence to get your heart going
          right?
                                                      85.

INT. HOME - EVENING
Joey and Dawn lie on the bed under the covers kissing
softly. The kitchen timer can still be heard getting louder
and louder.

EXT. WALKING HOME - EVENING
Alice continues to walk towards home with the wind still
whirling and the kitchen timer ticking louder and louder.

INT. JOEY’S MOTHERS HOUSE - EVENING
Joey’s mom sits in a chair in the kitchen of her home. The
kitchen timer’s ticking is heard still louder. The kitchen
looks very old fashioned but is clean and tidy. In front of
her on the table is a bottle of pills, a glass of water and
a picture of her husband. Joey’s mother sobs quietly and
sniffles as she sits at the table.
                    MOM
               (Quietly sobbing)
I miss you dear, I miss you so
          much. I’m coming now, I can’t stay
          here without you.
She takes a handful of the pills and swallows them all with
a drink of water to help them go down. She then seems to
notice a picture of Joey and Alice on her fridge. It is the
same photo that Joey has on the night-table of his room.
                    MOM
          I’m sorry Joseph. I hope you’ll
live on okay without me. You and
Dennis need to take care of each
          other.
She focuses in on Alice in the picture and smiles a little
with the tears still on her face.
                    MOM
And do hold on to that Alice girl,
I hope you’ll take my advice and
not let go of somebody like that,
          love is the most important.
                                                         86.

INT. BEDROOM - EVENING
Joey is on the side of the bed that Alice usually sleeps on
and is facing Dawn. The kitchen timer’s noise gets louder
and louder still. He is breathing heavily and smiling until
he sees over her shoulder the picture of him and Alice
smiling happily. He stares at the picture and as he stares
his expression gets sadder and sadder. Dawn notices the sad
expression on his face and seems to get frustrated.
                    DAWN
          What’s wrong?
                       JOEY
          This.
                       DAWN
                  (Angrily)
          This?
                    JOEY
               (Sadly)
Yeah, I’m sorry. This is bad, this
          is wrong. I love her.
                    DAWN
          And what about me?
                    JOEY
I’m attracted to you, I lust you,
          but I LOVE her... Fuck.

EXT. WALKING HOME - EVENING

Alice walks on towards home as the kitchen timer ticks
loudly. She passes the tree which Alice had been sitting on
and continues to walk.

INT. BEDROOM - EVENING
Joey gets out of bed and begins to put his pants on.
                    DAWN
So that’s it, you’re just gonna
fuck me and then claim you love her
and it was all a mistake?
Joey grabs a t-shirt and throws it on as he speaks and
suddenly realizes something.

                                                 (CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: 87.

                       JOEY
             I’m sorry, I made a mistake I’m so
sorry. She meant Alice, not you.
She meant I need to hold onto
             Alice!

                       DAWN
Fuck you. I’m the girl of your
             dreams!
                       JOEY
             I’m so sorry.
                       DAWN
             No, FUCK YOU.

EXT. WALKING HOME - EVENING
Alice turns the corner onto her street and walks towards her
home on the opposite side of the street. The kitchen timer
ticks very loudly.

INT. BEDROOM - EVENING
Joey looks at Dawn sadly and apologetically. Dawn looks
ferociously angry.

                       DAWN
                  (Screaming)
             FUCK YOU!
Joey turns and walks towards the stairs. Dawn behind him
reaches into her purse.

                       DAWN
Don’t you fucking walk away from
             me! LOOK AT ME!

Joey turns and faces Dawn who pulls a small gun out of her
purse. She points it right at Joey. The gun is the same gun
as the one from Joey’s dream and from the theater.
                       JOEY
                  (Horrified)
             No! N...
The timer rings very loudly as Dawn pulls the trigger with
the safety on. She pulls twice more, incredulous. Joey
moves for her as she flicks the safety switch and the gun
fires point blank. Joey crumples onto the floor clutching
his chest, wheezing and gasping. The timer keeps ringing.
                                                      88.

EXT. WALKING HOME - EVENING
Alice hears the sound of the gunshot coming from her home
and with a surprised expression on her face she begins to
run out across the street. A car comes speeding down the
street right through a stop sign and hits Alice as she is
running across the street. Alice flies to the ground and
lays motionless as the car just keeps on going right past.

INT. HOME - EVENING
Joey lies on the floor wheezing, half-conscious. Dawn,
terrified, drops the gun and runs out of the house, leaving
Joey.

INT. NEWS PRODUCTION BUILDING - MORNING
A news anchor sits at his desk giving the morning news.
People walk around the room going about their regular
business. The anchor looks up at the camera solemnly.
                    ANCHOR
Tragedy struck last night in a
small neighborhood home. A man was
found shot in his house, while
          outside, in a seemingly unrelated
          incident, his girlfriend Alice
Yorke, age 22, was hit and killed
by a car. The man is in stable
          condition at Victoria Hospital,
though his name has not been
          released pending further
          investigation. His assailant has
yet to be identified. In other news
          a plane crashed over Colorado
          yesterday evening. The initial
          investigation into the incident has
shown that there may have been an
issue with one of the engines. The
          authorities are speculating that
          the inspection of the plane’s
systems prior to take-off may not
have been thorough enough as the
plane was in a rush to take off.
And now over to Tim Kunitz who’s at
          the airport covering the story.
The anchor relaxes as the camera is off of him and he turns
to a co-worker and smiles and begins to speak. The
conversation is not heard though and more and more of the
newsroom is shown until the view backs out of the room and
down the hall. The view slowly fades.
