BEFORE THEY WERE LOST …
Lost resembles a Robert Altman film — so many characters, so much backstory, so many interwoven histories. Who needs six degrees of separation when just two will do for any two characters on Lost? And now that the show is back on (and on a regular schedule) you might find yourself saying, “That person looks familiar.” Here is the cast of Lost and all that they’ve done before and after the hit TV show. And bonus points if you know what three Lost stars have appeared in films that have won the Best Picture award at the Academy Awards. — Michael Clawson
Dr. Jack Shephard
REAL NAME: Matthew Fox, 40 CHARACTER STATUS: The show’s main star spent the first season as the voice of reason, the second season slowly unraveling and this third season held captive by mysterious “others.” Also, his dead dad was a player (correction: playa), his Asian girlfriend gave him a tattoo and he loves Kate whether he likes it or not. CAREER: Fox is slowly moving into movies: this year he had one scene in the putrid Smokin’ Aces and last year he had a fantastic role in football drama We Are Marshall. Before that, though, his claim to fame was television’s Party of Five.
Hurley Reyes
REAL NAME: Jorge Garcia, 33 CHARACTER STATUS: Big, lovable Hurley takes abuse from everyone on the island, but as soon as they need a shoulder to cry on he’s there for them. He’s also cursed because he played the lottery on wicked-evil numbers that are linked to his island. Also, he’s the proud new owner of a VW van. CAREER: Not much. He did half a season on Ted Danson’s comedy show Becker, and also a number of small roles in little-seen movies (Tomorrow by Midnight, Deck the Halls, Little Athens). He also did a voice for video game Hitman: Blood Money.
James “Sawyer” Ford
REAL NAME: Josh Holloway, 37 CHARACTER STATUS: Sarcastic, rude, obnoxious Sawyer is a mover and a shaker on the show, but his mouth usually gets him in trouble. He’s currently a major ping-pong loser. CAREER: He’s done a bunch of TV shows one episode at a time, but nothing worth mentioning (well, maybe Walker, Texas Ranger — ha, ha!). He did play a purse thief in Aerosmith’s “Cryin’” video, and Alicia Silverstone beats him up for it.
Juliet Burke
John Locke
REAL NAME: Terry O’Quinn, 54 CHARACTER STATUS: Rough, rugged and endlessly important to the discovery of new secrets on the show —no wonder John Locke is a fan favorite. And he fights monsters … and lives. He was disabled in some way before he crashed on the island, but now walks the jungle in search of hard-to-find answers. CAREER: Extensive. He’s done mucho television, from The West Wing and Alias to JAG and Millennium. As for movies, he’s played Howard Hughes in Disney’s The Rocketeer, Tombstone mayor and founder of the Tombstone Epitaph newspaper, John Clum, in the movie Tombstone; an ice skating coach in The Cutting Edge and a judge in Ghosts of Mississippi. Overall, he has had nearly 100 different movie and TV roles.
Kate Austen
REAL NAME: Evangeline Lilly, 27 CHARACTER STATUS: Kate loves two people — Jack and Sawyer. That will end badly. CAREER: Basically nothing. The movies she has been in (The Long Weekend, Freddy vs. Jason, Stealing Sinatra) she’s played bit characters or been a glorified extra.
Sayid Jarrah
REAL NAME: Naveen Andrews, 38 CHARACTER STATUS: A former Iraqi soldier, Sayid tortures people for a living. On the island he’s a bit nicer but not much. He lost his girlfriend in the second season. CAREER: He usually plays Indian or Middle Eastern men, but he’s landed some decent roles out of it. His biggest role was in the 1996 Oscar winner for best picture, The English Patient, in which he plays a bomb technician during World War II. He will soon be seen in the Robert Rodriguez half of Grindhouse.
LOST
Jin Kwon Ben/Henry
REAL NAME: Daniel Dae Kim, 38 CHARACTER STATUS: Former Korean mobster and doorman, Jin is the devoted husband to Sun. He’s trying to learn English, although that’s going slowly. CAREER: His credits are extensive but most of them are small roles. He’s done small parts on TV’s 24 and Angel, and in movies Spider-Man 2 and Academy Award-winner Crash.
REAL NAME: Elizabeth Mitchell, 36 CHARACTER STATUS: As one of the Others, Juliet’s fate hangs in the air as she manages Jack’s imprisonment. CAREER: She’s quite the workhorse. She’s played famous wives on TV (Teresa Earnhardt, Linda McCartney), done obnoxious kiddie flicks (two Santa Clause films) and stretched her legs with some wild roles. She got naked with Angelina Jolie in Gia, and was a child-killer in Running Scared. She was also a recurring character on ER.
REAL NAME: Michael Emerson, 52 CHARACTER STATUS: The Others’ enigmatic leader, who is currently stranded on an operating table. CAREER: Small roles in The Legend of Zorro, Saw and Unfaithful.
Mr. Eko
Sun Kwon
REAL NAME: Yunjin Kim, 33 CHARACTER STATUS: Pregnant, but possibly not by her husband. CAREER: Several Korean films.
REAL NAME: Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, 39 CHARACTER STATUS: Survived from the tail section of the plane, and became an instant favorite character around the world. He also locked horns with Locke. Now deceased. Killed by a smoke monster. CAREER: Small roles in Get Rich or Die Tryin’, The Bourne Identity, The Mummy Returns, Congo and Ace Venture: When Nature Calls. His largest role was on HBO’s Oz.
Charlie Pace
Michael Dawson
REAL NAME: Dominic Monaghan, 30 CHARACTER STATUS: Reformed heroine addict, but now fate is telling him he’s going to die. CAREER: Only three of the biggest films ever made — The Lord of the Rings trilogy. He played mischievous Hobbit Merry.
Claire Littleton
REAL NAME: Harold Perrineau, 43 CHARACTER STATUS: He killed two characters last season and we haven’t seen him this season. Presumably he’s floating through the ocean with his son, Walt. CAREER: Like Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Perrineau did an extensive stint on Oz. He also played Mercutio in Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation of Romeo & Juliet, and Link in the Matrix Reloaded and Matrix Revolutions. His next project is 28 Weeks Later, the sequel to zombie thriller 28 Days Later.
REAL NAME: Emilie de Ravin, 25 CHARACTER STATUS: Still a mommy. (Babies should be banned from TV.) CAREER: One major film: Wes Craven’s The Hills Have Eyes, in which she’s tortured by radiation freaks.
Desmond Hume
REAL NAME: Henry Ian Cusick, 39 CHARACTER STATUS: Former hatchdweller, but now he has ESP and thinks Charlie’s going to die. CAREER: Pretty much random TV here and there. Two episodes of 24 are the only highlights.
