The PsycINFO database contains records for articles in over 1,300 scholarly journals, conference proceedings, books, reports, and dissertations in Psychology and related disciplines indexed by the American Psychological Association from 1887 to the present. Most citations include abstracts. Currently, there are over 1,453,337 citations. New citations are loaded weekly. The PsycInfo Thesaurus provides Psychological terminology (descriptors) which group together articles within a common area. There are cross-references assigned to synonymous terminology from a standardized list developed by the American Psychological Association. Unlike keywords, descriptor searching is more exact. Example: Thesaurus Terminology. Group 1: Aging Group 2: Social Dating; Human Courtship To Locate the Journal articles, Click on UC- eLinks – to move from an article or book citation in an article database to the full online content of the item, or, for print materials, to automatically look for a UC library location of the item. Full Text Articles - copy of the article online ANTPAC catalog – Journal (print or electronic), if UCI owns it. Interlibrary Loan - Journal article if not owned by UCI ASK a Librarian - for additional assistance. To create a QuickBib - Click on Save, Print, Email – then choose a bibliographic style - APA then click on Create. Email the saved citations in your list to your email account 2 Use the Thesaurus to find appropriate Sociology terminology to search effectively From the Advanced screen, Select Search Tools then PsycThesaurus. Browse “drivers” (your term/ keyword) From the results- select most appropriate term – driver safety Note the history of the term within the thesaurus – all changes Example: Driver safety changed in 1973 to highway safety Terms with + provides relationship to synonyms, broader terms, etc. Check highway safety and click on search Narrow search accordingly using AND Aging; limit to empirical studies, and by date 1995-2008 3 To locate additional articles, search multiple databases with related content. B. To access PsycArticles and Sociological Abstracts, Select specific databases. Run the search in more than one database searching by keywords. NOTE descriptors searching are database specific; use the thesaurus in PsycInfo to do so. 4 C. Ignore dissertations; Focus on journal articles. Mark the important ones. To LOCATE Search the UCI ANTPAC catalog by journals title Determine the following: If the journal is at UCI Fulltext, link to the URL and locate the specific date/issue If the journal is at UCI in print, use the call number to locate the specific date/issue If the journal is NOT at UCI request it via Interlibrary Loan. (pls. see page 6-8 below) 5 What is ANTPAC and How to use it? How to find books on your topic. For help, see: http://tutorial.lib.uci.edu/mod3/mod3a.html a.
