WHY IS THE MODEL ARTS AND NILAND GALLERY REDEVELOPING?
The Model Arts and Niland Gallery in Sligo, one of the leading contemporary arts centres in Ireland, is delighted to announce details of their exciting redevelopment plans for 2008. These plans will culminate to create a flagship contemporary arts space that will allow the Model to further realise its goal of delivering activities that are at all times dynamic, innovative and inclusive, and play a defining role in pushing forward Ireland’s cultural future. The Redevelopment is being planned in the context of creating a brand new Cultural Quarter for Sligo which will include the Model‘s Redevelopment, a County Museum and a Civic Space onto which they both will face. Sligo’s increasing population, economic and infrastructural growth make this development a real necessity. It is a visionary concept that will make a significant impact on the city and will bravely identify the importance of culture and the arts here. By the Model taking its place in this new Cultural Quarter, it can ensure a continued relevance and importance to the local area, and actively contribute to the cultural economy of the North West on a whole. The Model has successfully met the local appetite for high level cultural programmes but has reached the point at which it needs to develop in order to meet its future needs. This Redevelopment will increase its Gallery Space, provide a state of the art performance space, 2 Education Studios, 8 Artists Studios and 1 Music Recording Studio. There will also be extra storage facilities provided and extended restaurant facilities. After the redevelopment, the Model will be an internationally significant flagship arts venue.
COST OF THE PROJECT The overall Cultural Quarter project costs !24 million. The Model Arts and Niland Gallery’s Redevelopment is costing !7 million. The Department of the Arts, Sports and Tourism has already awarded the Model !1.75 million as part of the 2007 ACCESS II fund. This placed the Model project as one of the top 5 arts development projects in the country, a clear stamp of approval from the Minister on the validity and strength of the redevelopment. Along with the County Council, we at the Model are jointly applying to other public bodies for additional funds, but separately have a !1.5 million fundraising target which we need to raise from private and corporate sources.

1. VISUAL ARTS
2. EDUCATION & NEW MEDIA
3. MUSIC & FILM
1. VISUAL ARTS
Are you inspired by visual art, do you want to invest in the development of emerging Irish artists, do you want to celebrate the work of established artists from Ireland and abroad? As part of the Model Redevelopment we are looking for inspired partners to invest in new spaces that will accommodate our high profile Visual Arts programme: • • • • New high spec Gallery New Artists Studios for emerging talent New Residential Studio for nurturing Irish talent New International studio for visiting International Artists
The Model Arts and Niland Gallery is one of Ireland's most important contemporary arts centres with an extensive and vibrant visual arts programme. Contemporary exhibitions feature local to international artists in six cycles of exhibitions annually. Both solo and thematic exhibitions feature in the programme with an emphasis on new work. Interdisciplinary projects (ie. within education and music programme) often link the contemporary exhibitions to the Niland Art Collection (see below). We are building new studios in the Redevelopment to meet Sligo’s need for space for both its’ budding and established artists, on both a local and national level. The Model is home to the impressive Niland Art Collection, which is numbers some 300 works, largely from the twentieth century. The collection contains key works by Jack B. Yeats, Paul Henry, Dorothy Cross and Nick Miller amongst many others. Exhibitions are changed four times per year. We are building high spec gallery space in the Redevelopment to accommodate larger exhibitions and create a loop of galleries, which will create a more pleasant and practical experience for visitors. Corporate support is vital to the health of this dynamic cultural initiative. The Quarry Hill.jpg “The proposed new gallery space at the Model Arts and Niland Gallery will be one of the best gallery spaces in Ireland. The circuit of galleries created by the redevelopment will give greater scope to artists to create a unique controlled environment for their work and the visitor experience.” Grace Weir, Artist “literally a ‘model arts centre’…it has the feel of almost being purpose built as a space for the arts” Paul Durcan, Irish Poet
“I am truly looking forward to my fellowship award at The Model.... the energetic multitude of forms of cultural production and crossovers displayed and encouraged at The Model is something that I am very interested in - it will naturally be a great source of inspiration.” Nina Cannell, Artist and Model Visual Fellow 2007 “"The Model Arts Centre was set up by a group of committed painters, writers and like minded friends. It was wonderful to be part of the early development and to see it grow over the years. It is one of the finest Arts Centres in the country. It is very exciting that is now being taken to another stage and I wish the new project every success.”
Sean McSweeney, Artist
2. EDUCATION & NEW MEDIA
Do you want to invest in the future of Ireland? Children and Young People that are exposed to art and culture from a young age are more creative thinkers, more willing contributors and more open adults. We inspire and motivate children at every age, showing them ways to relate to the world through art and opening their minds to the possibilities the future holds for them. As part of the Model Redevelopment we are looking for inspired partners to invest in the new Education spaces we are building for our Education programme: • • New Education Suite for practical workshops, lectures and talks New Multi Media Suite for seminars and multi-media activities
More than 1,500 people participate in educational programmes at the Model every year, including school, community, public and film programmes. Programmes such as Young Model, RehabCare, Summer Children’s Art programme and Schools Programme welcome children and adults to explore the Gallery and their own creative expressions. Corporate support is vital to the health of these dynamic educational initiatives.
“Young Model is a brilliant experience!”
“I have learned new listening
skills and speaking skills”
“I have discovered the use of sound editing and the new possibilities in music where there are no boundaries”
“I have learned more about communication skills. I’ve become more confident doing a variety of activities in front of many people”
“With the contemporary experimental music [we’ve been doing] I think it’s great that such originality can be expressed” - participants in the Model’s Education programme A core element of our redevelopment is the provision of two purpose built education rooms, as mentioned above. One room will be dedicated to practical/workshop activity and the other will include facilities for seminars and multi-media activities. At present the Education team only have access to one small room for all activites and this limits the range of programmes they are able to offer. A dedicated seminar and multi-media room will allow for a much more developed and accessible programme for our adult and Young Model programmes.
3. MUSIC & FILM
Are you passionate about performance? Do you believe music can move people or film can transport them? If you want to invest in the future of Irish musicians and contribute to the landscape of quality music and film in Ireland you can support us in building: • New high spec 240 seat venue, custom built for music and film • New Recording/Rehearsal Studio to inspire and support emerging talent • New Residential Studio to nurture fellowships with musicians
Music is at the core of The Model Arts and Niland Gallery’s activities. The Model has a long tradition of bringing artists of the highest calibre from Ireland and abroad to the North West to participate in our innovative music programme. A key aim of our current and future programme is to encourage the production of important new work and to provide enlightened and practical support to musicians, with the new music recording studio. Highlights of our 2006 Music Programme include Patti Smith, Donal Dineen, Lisa Hannigan, Chequerboard, Si Schroeder and juneau/projects/. We also hold two annual 2 music festivals, the New Music Festival whose artists have included Aureliano Cattaneo, Jurgen Simpson and Simon Mawhinney, and and the Sligo Baroque Music Festival. We also have 2 film clubs exhibiting films throughout the year: Sligo Film Society & Sligo’s Youth Film Club “Twisted Reels”. Corporate support is vital to the health of these dynamic cultural, musical and artistic initiatives.
“I am honoured to bring my exhibition and music to the Model. I think it is one of the most beautiful galleries in the world” Patti Smith, US Singer & Artist “The Musical Fellowship is a very encouraging initiative and one which will give me much longed for time and space to develop new work of my own and collaborate with other artists. I'm greatly appreciative of this opportunity” Chequerboard, Musician and Model Music Fellow 2007 “Sometimes it only takes a sound to get an idea going.. once the spark is lit the dialogue is ongoing. Opportunities to actually collaborate don’t come around that often however, which is where the Model comes in” Donal Dineen, Curator of Month of Sundays at the Model “Having Arthouse film in Sligo is really important, and as the Gaiety Cinema only exhibits commercial films, Sligo Film Society at the Model remedies this problem.” Sligo Film Society Member “The Model Arts and Niland Gallery has just hosted the best line-up of Baroque music this country has ever seen” Martin Adams, The Irish Times
Our future vision is to continue delivering this
high level of programming across many music genres, working with established international artists and emerging local talent. There is a much needed role for us to play nationally and internationally as an arts organisation that works directly with musicians offering them critical engagement, practical support and the opportunity to experiment within their field. This proactive and innovative approach to programming music results in a unique music experience for both artist and audience.
