THE BALD EAGLES ARE COMING!
The Skagit River Bald Eagle Awareness Team (the Upper Skagit Bald Eagle Festival) will be opening to the general public its Skagit River Bald Eagle Interpretive Center (IC) on Saturday, December 8, 2007. For about a decade, the IC has been housed in the Rockport Fire Hall each weekend and the week between Christmas and New year’s Day during the traditional Bald Eagle visiting season. The IC offers watershed stewardship education and general information for Eastern Skagit County winter visitors. This year, however, Skagit County Parks has made the Park Ranger residence at Howard Miller Steelhead County Park available for the IC’s new location through President’s Day and into the future. The facility has had some modifications made in a combined effort of Skagit County Parks, Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife, Puget
Sound Energy, Skagit Fisheries Enhancement Group and the Skagit River Bald Eagle Awareness Team/Bald Eagle Festival Committee to improve it for housing numerous visitors at any given time. Large porches have been added for extra shelter and for outdoor eagle visiting; a new alternative heating system in preparation of power outages; and an enlarged restroom are a few of the changes in anticipation of accommodating the increased numbers of visitors. Last season 2006 – 2007, the “old” IC had about 7,000 visitors over its season from December through February. The IC will have all the activities as it has had over recent years, i.e. special visitor options on Fridays for Senior and school groups; guest speakers most every day; nature walks; a great selection of “area” watershed and festival souvenirs; eagle viewing information and equipment; educational displays; trained staff; and a welcome, warm place out of the weather to just stop and relax.
For details on the operation and activity schedule for the Interpretive Center’s upcoming season look at the festival’s website www.skagiteagle.org, or call (360) 853-7283 to request more information.
Upper Skagit Bald Eagle Festival’s Volunteer Meetings Start
