Sport Jones’ town VOLLEYBALL BEIJING Olympics star Tamsin Barnett has a local connection – Williamstown resident and beach volleyball star Peter ‘Chico’ Jones who was her first coach. Jones, a stalwart of the game, regularly coaches kids and adults five days a week at the Vic Beach Indoor Beach Volleyball centre cnr Doherty’s Road and Grieves Parade, Altona. Monster of a player VFL Terry Mallinder GERRY Callahan is one of those larger than life characters. But what would you expect from someone with the nickname ‘Monster’ to be? Callahan inherited the unfortunate moniker early on in his football career in the early 1950s. ‘‘At the time I had had a few teeth knocked out,’’ he once recalled. ‘‘... you never had a mouth-guard. ‘‘It was a time when we had crew cuts. I had my nose broken twice, and I had asthma, and when I’d get really agitated I’d froth at the mouth. I guess they couldn’t call you anything else could they? Of course, the term ‘Monster’ could also describe the way Callahan went about his footy all those years ago as Williamstown’s big burly centre half-back come ruckman. He would regularly ‘monster’ the opposition. He was such a commanding figure, Callahan would go onto lead the Seagulls during the club’s golden era and become a legend. The club’s senior best and fairest award is afterall called the Gerry Callahan Medal. He enjoyed a rapid rise with the Seagulls after crossing from Moonee Ponds YCW. He won the best and fairest in his first year (1951), and made captain in his fourth, aged 24. He once joked, ‘‘. . . there were Captains Alan Murphy (Moorabbin) and Gerry Callahan (Will) after the 1958 grand final. better footballers in the side, but I got the nod. The previous year we’d been to Broken Hill and I think I threw about eight heads in a two-up competition up there, and I think that’s why they put me in as captain, because I was a very good tosser of the coin.’’ After captaining the side to three straight VFA flags in 1954, ’55 and ’56 under coach Wally Carter, Callahan was made captain-coach in ’58, after the Seagulls ‘struggled’ in 57, finishing third. The Seagulls had won 20 from 20 in the home and away rounds, but, looking tired, they were bundled out in successive finals, the last by old sparring partner Port Melbourne. ‘‘We were a shadow,’’ Callahan said. ‘‘We just weren’t right.’’ Replacing Carter, Callahan said he was ‘‘very much in the hot seat’’. ‘‘I hadn’t applied (for the job) . . . I think I was going to go to Tassie or somewhere, but then a couple of good friends said to put in for it. ‘‘They (the club) took the punt by giving me 12 months, and we weren’t much of a chance to do much, but we got a premiership.’’ The first of back-to-back flags, the Seagulls beat Moorabbin in the ’58 Grand Final, 13.18 (96) to 8.16 (64), with Callahan starring in the ruck alongside centreman John Martin, after they had built a 67-point three quarter-time lead. It was, in fact, the second Grand Final of the year after the two combatants had tied a week earlier. The Seagulls did well to draw level with the Kangaroos after being down by 28-points at quarter-time. Callahan said he believed the closeness of the players was a key in the team’s success. ‘‘I remember (premiership halfforward) Ron Smith saying at the team of the century (night) we were all mates, there was no differentiating between us,’’ he said. ‘‘We all respected each other.’’ The Seagulls’ fitness also played a part. ‘‘They (the opposition) might be with us, but we would always crush them in the end.’’ Callahan became the club’s longest serving coach, with a record 202 games to add to his 171 games as a player.
