savours her second act
IAN SPELLING | NYT SYNDICATE
Elizabeth Berkley
Turn on the television, and Elizabeth Berkley will probably pop up on your screen
The L Word, Berkley will soon be seen in the films Women in Trouble and S Darko. In the former she plays a woman discussing mommy issues with a therapist, while the latter — a sequel to Donnie Darko (2001) — casts her as a former junkie who has traded bad habits and is now a religious fanatic infatuated with her handsome pastor (Matthew Davis). Berkley also recently filmed a pilot for MTV called Ask Elizabeth. The reality show would be an extension of her efforts, via visits with school students, talks to youth groups and exchanges on her Web site, ask-elizabeth.com, to provide a forum for young women to discuss everything from peer pressure and body image to fitness and goal setting. Clearly Berkley has come a long way since Showgirls. The actress, who earned her Equity card at age 9, is now married and is managing a busy career that seemed improbable at best in the wake of the notorious Paul Verhoeven flop. “The ability to overcome something is one of the things I try to instill and share with the girls who go to Ask-Elizabeth.com or that I talk to in person,” Berkley says. “When you personally come through something, only then can you be a certain type of authority to speak about a matter.” Elizabeth Berkley.

t might be a new episode of CSI: Miami, on which she plays the recurring role of the bipolar former girlfriend of Horatio Caine (David Caruso). Wait a couple of weeks, and it could be a fresh hour of The L Word, the Showtime drama that’s tapped her to appear in an arc as an old friend of Bette (Jennifer Beals). Or, of course, it may be a repeat of Saved by the Bell, the cheerfully cheesy teen show that put her on the map, or the latest airing of Showgirls , the notorious film that nearly deep-sixed her career. “It’s been so exciting,” Berkley says, speaking from her Los Angeles home on a rare day off. “The whole fall period, my weeks were divided into doing these distinctly different shows. Monday through Wednesday I’d be on the CSI set, and then I’d take a flight to Vancouver and do the remainder of the week of The L Word and then fly back. “It was creatively exciting,” she continues, “because the characters are so different. And it was also exciting just to drop into these different sets and experience these different energies and work with these different casts. A lot of actors worry about keeping it exciting, and I didn’t have to worry about that. “I also have a couple of films that I’ve done,” she adds, “and I did a pilot for a show. So it’s a joy right now. I’m just doing all kinds of projects and all kinds of roles.” Berkley first appeared on CSI: Miami last season, the show’s seventh. Introduced as Julia, Horatio’s ex-flame and the mother of his son, Kyle (Evan Ellingson), Berkley made an immediate impression on audiences in four episodes. She has turned up in two so far this season, and will soon report back to set for more. “It feels a bit like home now, which is a great feeling,” Berkley says. “And it’s only going to continue to get more juicy on the show. It was revealed that my character is bipolar and that I’m Kyle’s mother, and Julia and Horatio have such an intense past. So all of the layers are starting to reveal themselves. “I started off as what could be perceived as an ultimate femme fatale, grifter/bad girl,” she says. “As we’ve been going, the writers have been giving me such great things to do. You’re gradually getting to see what’s going on with her. “And the best part, honestly, is working with David,” the actress says. “I’ve rarely worked with someone who cares so much, and that’s obviously part of why the show is so good. When you’re the lead, you set the tone, and he cares so much and wants to make it the best. And I really believe that’s why CSI: Miami is one of the most popular shows in the world. “David and I had never met before,” she continues, “and from Day 1 we had great chemistry together. There had to be this history and that was going to be the thing that made these characters believable, and the chemistry was there.” And then there’s The L Word, the daring, drama that explores the lives and relationships of several friends. The show will kick off its sixth and final season soon, with Berkley set for five of the eight episodes. She shares many scenes with Beals, a longtime friend and her co-star in the film Roger Dodger, and with Laurel Holloman, who plays Bette’s pal, Tina. Berkley is Kelly, whose familiarity with Bette dates back to their college days, when Kelly was a freshman and Bette was a teacher’s assistant. Eventually Bette says something to Kelly, which terrified her and ended their friendship. “Here we are years later, Kelly is recently divorced from her multi-multibillionaire husband and she’s come out to LA to have a fresh start,” Berkley says. “She’s opened an art gallery, and that’s where she reconnects with Bette.” “So they have this history,” she continues, “and there’s this intimacy because of the close friendship they had. Bette was a mentor to Kelly, and that definitely causes some tension between Bette and Tina, and Tina is threatened by our closeness.” The show is famous for pushing the envelope with its frank talk. Berkley’s stint won’t result in any new headlines, however. “I knew up front that there wouldn’t be anything offensive,” she says. “It wasn’t anything I needed to get comfortable with, because it wasn’t going to be a part of what I was doing. “But I’ve always been a fan of the show and just how groundbreaking it is,” Berkley adds. “Not only was I a fan because of Jennifer, but the other actresses on the show are so incredible. They’re all amazing, and I’d love to work with them on anything.” On the heels of CSI: Miami and

200 years of Braille

Inspired by a secret military alphabet, Louis Braille created a six-point system of dots with 63 possible combinations

early 200 years after the birth of Louis Braille, the alphabet of raised dots he created to overcome his lack of sight continues to touch the lives of blind people everywhere. Braille was born on January 4, 1809, near Paris. The son of a saddler, he injured his eye with an awl when he was three years old. The resulting infection spread to both eyes and he was soon blind. Despite his blindness, he continued to attend a regular village school until the age of 10, when he enrolled at the Royal Institution for Blind Youth in Paris. There, while his fellow students slept, he began punching dots into soft wood to create an alphabet. Inspired by a secret military alphabet that could be used to convey messages in the dark, Braille created a six-point system of dots with 63 possible combinations, now widely recognised as the Braille alphabet. When completed, the alphabet could represent all the letters of the Latin alphabet, along with the digits 0 through 9, plus mathematical symbols and punctuation. Devised in 1829, the alphabet is still in regular use by 150 million blind people worldwide. It continues to be a common feature in education and work settings, despite the development of advanced computers to help blind people read. Indeed, no language for the blind before or since has ever

That’s because Braille is not only so easy to learn, it also functions simultaneously for reading and writing. “You can do a lot with computers and audio technology. But with purely audio media, you can only reach people who can no longer read and write themselves,” says Peter Brass, president of the Community of Vision-Impaired Computer Users. Since people need to be able to read notices, signs and notes in day-to-day life, the Braille alphabet remains indispensable to many. Braille completed the alphabet when he was 16 and eventually became a teacher at the school, where he taught his alphabet until his death in 1852 of tuberculosis. Although he was well-known during his lifetime, his alphabet did not achieve worldwide acclaim until several years after his death. Because of this contribution to society, Braille is venerated around the world. In 1952 in his native France, his ashes were reinterred in the Pantheon in Paris, the final resting place for that country’s great men and women.

Identify domestic violence
Tackling domestic abuse in the classroom isn’t easy when some pupils may find it a bit close to home
“A lot of young girls say, ‘If my boyfriend hit me, I’d be out that door straight away,’” says Sophie Pounde, 15. “But you may not know what you’d do before you’re actually in that situation.” “I kept coming out with stereotypes, like ‘she’s clever, so she’d know to leave her boyfriend’,” agrees her classmate, 15-year-old Emma Densham. “But we learned that there is no stereotypical person who is abused - it can be absolutely anyone.” The girls, pupils at Hendon school in London, are talking about an 11-week drama project on domestic abuse that they’ve just completed, guided by Daniel Rachel from the London-based educational charity Tender, which works through the creative arts with young people to address issues of domestic abuse. Their class was not unusual, he says, in being utterly shocked by some of the statistics he presented them with. The facts the girls keep mentioning are that a woman will on average be attacked 32 times before seeking help, and that two women a week are killed by their partner or ex-partner. Their group is working on a presentation to perform to the rest of their school in assembly. As 17 and 18 year-old students, and at an age when they are having to negotiate their first romantic relationships, taking time to learn how to define their own boundaries - and what to do if lines get crossed - is clearly highly relevant. But is there sufficient support in place if a student who has a painful home situation ends up feeling that they have to “tell on
A typical family domestic violence saga. their parents” after a discussion on domestic abuse? And how is an issue like this dealt with when it comes to primary-age children, who could be left feeling anxious by the information? Shying away from talking to young children about unhealthy relationships is no way to help them deal with the upsetting and possibly dangerous situations that some will have to face on a daily basis, says Angela Holleran, headteacher at Holy Cross primary school in Liverpool in north-west England. Ignoring signs that domestic abuse may be taking place is not an option, says Holleran firmly, no matter how uncomfortable it may be for a professional to face parents with their concerns. “It’s a highly relevant subject even to primary-age children, though it has to be handled in a sensitive and age-appropriate way,” she says. “Child protection and safeguarding are top priority in this school. I’m conscious that in 90% of cases of domestic abuse, children are in the same room or in the next room. We have to teach them how to keep themselves safe.”
A new draft code of conduct for teachers in the UK puts a duty on them to report any suspicion of abuse affecting children. Holleran recently invited the UK children’s charity, the NSPCC, into her school to lead a programme called “Relationships and Respect” with 8 and 9-year-old pupils, after writing to all parents asking if they had concerns about the subject to be covered. She received no negative responses, but emphasises that before any work is done in class all staff are given training in how to respond to children’s concerns, “because otherwise, it could do a lot of harm”. Across Liverpool, volunteers from the police, health service, youth offending team and domestic violence support services have all been trained to go into schools to deliver the NSPCC programme. Elaine Benson, the charity’s domestic violence co-ordinator for education, emphasises that from a young age, children need to be made aware what makes for healthy and unhealthy relationships, partly so that they recognise if they need to find ways of keeping themselves safe at home, or inform other adults of their situation, but also because they need alternative models for their own relationships as they grow up. Everyone acknowledges, nevertheless, that domestic abuse is always going to be a difficult subject to cover, not only for children, but also, potentially, for some staff. Denise Harding is a sex and relationships education consultant who recently worked with the charity Women’s Aid on its new lesson plan toolkit, “Expect Respect”.
The significance of Murphy’s Law
JON HENLEY | GUARDIAN NEWS SERVICE
A
mong the many fine anniversaries in prospect this year, not the least is the 60th birthday of Murphy’s Law, alternatively - though erroneously - known as Sod’s Law or, if you’re really into this kind of thing, Finagle’s Law. This is the commonly held perception that the world is inherently a perverse place; in other words, if something can go wrong, it will. The proverbial example of the principle is, of course, that if you drop a slice of toast, it will land buttered side down. There are countless others; people have written entire books of them and websites abound (including www.murphys-laws.com, to which my thanks) . The military are fond of: “The more advanced your equipment, the further you will be from civilisation when it fails.” Parents will relate to: “No child ever throws up in the toilet.” Drivers will appreciate: “The other lane is always faster.” Shoppers will relate to: “The simpler and quicker your transaction, the more complex and time-consuming the transaction of the person in front of you in the queue.” We can all enjoy: “The paper is strongest along the perforated line”, “You always find something in the last place you look” (a necessary corollary of which is: “You will never find something in the last place you look but in the first place, where you did not see it first time around”) and (my personal favourite) “Any foreign body in your shoe will invariably work itself into the position where it causes most discomfort.” It is worth noting that there is no point disputing Murphy’s Law (ML). It is both correct and self-proving, as can be shown by the following: ML states that if anything can go wrong, it will. ML itself can therefore go wrong. If ML can
Jon Henley salutes the simple brilliance of Murphy’s Law: the rule that if something can go wrong, it will
go wrong, then things can sometimes go right. We know from experience that things do sometimes go right. Ergo, ML can go wrong. Ergo, ML is correct and self-proving. There is, however, some dispute about its precise origin. The principle it embodies has obviously existed since the dawn of mankind, and dedicated researchers from the American Dialect Society have found it described in print as early as 1877. But according to a fascinating series of articles by one Nick T Spark in the Annals of Improbable Research, there can be little doubt that Murphy’s Law as we now know it is named after Edward A Murphy Jr, a test engineer for the McDonnell Douglas aerospace manufacturer during a series of G-force experiments carried out in 1949 by the US air force to assess the tolerance of the human body to acceleration. One experiment apparently involved a set of 16 sensors attached to the subject’s body. These could be mounted in one of two ways, and one of Murphy’s assistants installed all of them the wrong way round, resulting in a zero reading. According to Robert Murphy, Edward’s son, the words his father uttered at the time were along the lines of: “If there’s more than one way to do a job, and one of those ways will result in disaster, then somebody will do it that way.” This we might term the original Murphy’s Law. However George Nichols, another engineer present at the experiment, recalls the phrase as: “If that guy has any way of making a mistake, he will,” a rather cruel jibe later more kindly condensed by the McDonnell Douglas team to: “If it can happen, it will happen.” Major John Paul Stapp, the subject of the experiment, then reportedly summed up the newly coined law at a press conference some days later as: “Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong.”

A self-confessed ‘pretty unlikely early adopter’, the digital guru Clay Shirky still proved to be uncannily prescient about the impact of the web - which is why Tom Teodorczuk is getting his media forecast for 2009

lay Shirky, with his bald head and composed manner, bears a resemblance to REM’s frontman, Michael Stipe, and his prognosis for the future of the media industry could be encapsulated in the titles of two REM songs - Monster and Shiny Happy People. On the one hand, the leading web thinker and adjunct professor of New York University predicts further gloom for traditional media: ‘2009 is going to be a bloodbath.’ Yet he foresees that a recession may produce greater industry clarity by forcing radical action, which he explains as a boss saying to staff: ‘‘Bonfire, this is Hail Mary time!’, instead of: ‘This year we made as much money as last year but we’re still restructuring dramatically.’” Much of the success of Shirky’s recent book, Here Comes Everybody (Penguin Press HC), about internet technologies and the effects of mass democratisation of the web, came from its simplicity and the absence of jargon. ‘As with the printing press, the loss of professional control will be bad for many of society’s core institutions,’ he writes. In conversation he is just as plain-speaking, saying, for example, that ‘Management has a hard time destroying parts of its business unless the alternative, obvious to everyone, is that there is no choice.’ Based in the unlikely environs of NYU’s Interactive Telecommunications Program, a stone’s throw from a fusty independent bookstore in downtown Manhattan, rather than Silicon Valley, Shirky, 44, is unburdened by traditional media ties. No one, of course, can know what a future media landscape will look like. But, given that Shirky was among the few to have forecast 15 years ago that classified advertising would be sold online rather than via a newspaper ad, his crystal ball is more estimable than most others. This is his forecast: Newspapers The great misfortune of newspapers in this era is that they were such a good idea for such a long time that people felt the newspaper business model was part of a deep truth about the world, rather than just the way things happened to be. It’s like the fall of communism, where a lot of the eastern European satellite states had an easier time because there were still people alive who remembered life before the Soviet Union nobody in Russia remembered it. Newspaper people are like Russians, in a way. Jeff Jarvis said it beautifully: “If you can’t imagine anyone linking to what you’re about to write, don’t write it.” The things that the Huffington Post or the Daily Beast have are good storytelling and low costs. Newspapers are going to get more elitist and less elitist. The elitist argument is: “Be the Economist or New Yorker, a small, niche publication that says: ‘We’re only opening our mouths when what we say is demonstrably superior to anything else on the subject.’” The populist model is: “We’re going to take all the news pieces we get and have an enormous amount of commentary. It’s whatever readers want to talk about.” Finding the working business model between them in that expanded range is the new challenge. Why pay for it at all? The steady loss of advertising revenue, accelerated by the
accident of economics occasioned by the printing press - high upfront cost and filtering happening at the source of publication is over. But will the New York Times still exist on paper? Of course, because people will hit the print button. Books and magazines If you pick a magazine at random, it will not interest you. For people who care about quality, it’s easier to find it online. If it’s a highly qualified niche magazine, something aimed at surgeons or firefighters, it’s going online. There’s no reason those things should exist. The great advantage magazines have is glossy pictures. It’s better to read on paper than on the web but it’s much better to look at pictures on paper than on the net. Brides magazine is going to be the last one standing. The book world is more secure. I think the big revolution is going to be print on demand. Imagine only having one browsing copy of every book in a bookstore. You could say “Malcolm Gladwell’s Outliers looks good”, and out pops a brand new copy. Why does a bookstore or a publisher have to be in the shipping and warehousing business? TV The big fight will be between passion and mass appeal but I don’t think it’s a question of who will win. It’s not a transition from A to B, it’s one to many. The question is who figures out the business model that says it’s better to have six million passionate fans than seven million bored ones? That is going to be the transformation because what you see with these user groups, whether it’s for reality TV or science fiction, is that people love the conversation around the shows. The renaissance of quality television is an indicator of what an increased number of distribution channels can do. It is no accident that this started with cable. And the BBC iPlayer? That’s a debacle. The digital rights management thing ...let’s just pretend that it was a dream like on Dallas and start from scratch.
The great advantage magazines have is glossy pictures. It’s better to read on paper than on the web but it’s much better to look at pictures on paper than on the net. recession, has normalised the idea that it’s acceptable to move to the web. Even if we have the shallowest recession and advertising comes back as it inevitably does, more of it will go to the web. I think that’s it for newspapers. What we saw happen to the Christian Science Monitor [the international paper shifted its daily news operation online] is going to happen three or four dozen times (globally) in the next year. The 500-year-old
irst, the doom and gloom. The web has become flooded with “me-too” businesses, hundreds of “the next Facebook” and plenty of wobbly business ideas based on making money from large audiences with advertising. Now that funding is harder to find, investors want to see bootstrapped businesses focused on income. The good news is the consensus, particularly among those who survived the 2001 dotcom crash, that a downturn can be an opportunity for the most agile, intelligent start-ups to prove themselves. “There were lots of awful parties in 2000 that were really for the business development guys,” says Nigel Eccles, co-founder of the news start-up Hubdub. “But it’s the technology that’s cool, not the exits. There’s always lots of innovation in downturns - this is the time for geeks and for ideas.” Added to that, smaller start-ups can hunker down until the economy picks up. Bigger media have far bigger problems - huge overheads and a dependency on traditional revenue sources, such as TV or print advertising, that are sliding steadily downhill. Even online spend - which saw voracious growth of 38% in 2007, according to the Interactive Advertising Bureau - is predicted to remain flat next year. Tanking print sales haven’t helped we’ve already seen a slew of redundancies across publishing, and I’d be surprised if innovation budgets hadn’t been slashed before those jobs were cut. Surely if there were ever a time to prove a funding commitment to digital - essential to the next generation of the media industry - that time is now? The Association of Online Publishers is putting on a brave face. “We continue to be optimistic for next year,” says its co-chair Alison Reay, also digital media director at UK-based Telegraph Media Group. “It is going to be difficult, but there will be more growth and it’s an opportunity for all publishers to demonstrate their worth online.” Companies must remain focused on how they get a return from investment in new technology, she says. “The problem for major media companies is that they are still underweight on the internet,” says Eccles. “The opportunity I see is for media companies to work more closely with start-ups to bring engaging functionality to their community.” There’s huge potential to increase “stickiness” of news sites by partnering with the great technology in relevant web start-ups, he adds. In terms of acquisitions in 2009, Yahoo remains a target, although as Microsoft insists it will not step back to the negotiating table, it remains unclear whether there is any company big enough to take it on in this market. Acquisitions of small teams by mid-size companies are more likely. “There will be lots of consolidation, and lots of companies will fall by the wayside,” says Andy McLoughlin, co-founder of the start-up Huddle. The collaborative business tool benefited recently when a US competitor folded, and recommended that their customers sign up with Huddle instead.
From start-ups to big media, it’s all about sharing - content, costs and platforms
Mobile could perhaps finally claim to be gearing up for that elusive “year of mobile”. The sector was rudely awakened by not one but two intruders in the past 18 months: Apple, with the iPhone, and Google, with its open Android system. “Every year since 2000 is supposed to be the big year for mobile, but for the first time I’m not sceptical about this year,” says Eccles. The iPhone will continue to be massively influential, he believes, particularly its strategy of being a platform on which external companies and developers can build. With tighter budgets in 2009, we will see more focused apps building on the most successful trends so far - the most popular gaming products and potentially lucrative location-based tools for mobile. Google’s video-sharing site YouTube has reached an important milestone in proving its legitimacy, with 90% of the 350 major publishers that have registered with the site choosing to place ads next to illegally uploaded clips of
their videos rather than have them removed. It’s a solution that satisfies all sides, and guarantees that YouTube will mature even further in the next year, adding full-length films. Post-Kangaroo, the future for web video looks less certain. Despite the downturn, there’s a tangible optimism in the start-up community. One of the most powerful technology trends of 2008 was the shift from sites as destinations to open, sharing platforms. Rivals including Google, Yahoo and MySpace all partner on the OpenSocial initiative, a shared set of standards for developing social networking applications across their sites. The benefits are more applications, as it is less work for developers to build for multiple sites, and crucially a more uniform experience for users. Big media needs to start thinking like this. Can you imagine, for example, the UK’s Times, Telegraph and Guardian partnering on the technology for a shared content system? It seems absurd, but the equivalent is happening in technology. The principle should be explored. Big media needs some big ideas. It’s not about the money any more - it’s about being resourceful and flexible in order to survive.

Bipasha looking for serious roles
Dhoom 2 is taking steps towards signing on for serious roles. “If I don’t like what’s being offered, I won’t sign anything (any more),” Bipasha had said earlier in an interview. Her stint with arthouse movie started with Prakash Jha’s 2005 political drama Apaharan. He presented her in a deglamourised role, but it was Ajay Devgan who had an authorbacked role. Bipasha’s first meatier role was in Madhur Bhandarkar’s critically acclaimed 2006 film Corporate. She proved her mettle and both critics and audiences applauded her performance. She was nominated for the Filmfare Best Actress award. Last year she did Rituparno Ghosh’s Bengali film Shob Charitro Kalponik and is currently doing Sudipto C h a t t o p a d h y a y a’s Pankh and Rahul Dholakia’s Lamhaa. Despite churning out fewer hits and more misses, the actress, who entered filmdom in 2001, constantly hogged the limelight, thanks to her oomph factor. Her long-awaited share of fame came in 2008 with

he came into the limelight with her coffee bean complexion in Ajnabee and was called a scorcher for her skin show in Jism. But Bollywood beauty Bipasha Basu, who turned 30 recently, has now moved on from being just an icon and is signing on mature roles. Voted the Sexiest Asian woman in 2007 by the British weekly newspaper Eastern Eye, the starlet of films like Rudraksh, No Entry, Omkara and

hits like Race and Bachna Ae Haseeno. She is now breaking from convention and taking on new challenges. For Lamhaa, Bipasha is all set to change the dynamics of physical appearances of a Kashmiri girl. “When you think of a Kashmiri girl in our movies, what comes to mind is a fair-skinned, light-eyed girl. But I want to disprove that myth. The preconceived notions have to be overcome,” said Bipasha. The actress is bent on looking convincing in the role and had even invited a Kashmiri woman to Mumbai in order to study her body language, speech patterns and mannerisms to get into the character.
“I think I’m going to be more keen on getting it right than the director. I’ve never done a film like this before. The role requires me to be someone else altogether,” she said. “And for this I needed help. I wanted to play the character the way girls really are today in Kashmir. Very basic,” explained the actress, who is dating Bollywood hunk John Abraham. Unlike other actors, Bipasha is not very keen to try her luck in Hollywood. “No filmmakers of Hollywood are willing to sign any Bollywood actor without a screen test apart from Aishwarya Rai. They seem to know no Hindi film actors, not even Amitabh Bachchan. “I found out that I will have to start again (there) from scratch like screen tests and other tantrums. They treat you like a newcomer. So I’ve decided to stay in Mumbai and be the ‘queen’ here,” she had said. “India is a very comfortable place for us because we have already made a niche here. So why would anyone want to go and struggle there? I don’t want to go and struggle. I have gone through my struggle.” Her other future projects include Aa Dekhen Zara and Freeze.
Farhan anxious for sister’s film
I Acting in Rock On was fun for Farhan Akhtar, but now it seems to have become a responsibility. The director-turnedactor says working in his sister’s directorial debut Luck By Chance is an extra challenge and he has to ensure its success. “I’m not looking at Luck By Chance as an opportunity to further my career as an actor. It is my sister’s film and I am the producer. So it is very important for me to see Luck By Chance work in totality,” said Farhan. Directed by Zoya Akhtar, the film also stars Hrithik Roshan and Konkana Sen Sharma and is scheduled for release in January-end. The success of Rock On! has made Farhan the most promising debutant actor of 2008. As the encomiums flow in, he tries hard not to get affected by the praise. To compound his woes, Farhan plays a struggling actor in Luck By Chance. “In my first film, the unreleased Fakir, I played a member of a film unit. In Rock On!, I was a musician. Both were parts intrinsic to my personality. But the struggler in Luck By Chance is someone I’ve seen outside.” “Every day these hopefuls wait outside buildings, by your car, at the foot of elevators and lifts, to get the attention of filmmakers. Every day they are prepared to be snubbed and humiliated. I’ve seen these guys’ humiliation and desperation, but not experienced them first-hand. There’s so much desperation to portray without making the character look in-your-face tragic.” As a director, Farhan has hits like Dil Chahta Hai, Lakshya and Don - The Chase Begins Again to his credit.

Pancham died a sad man
Going down memory lane, legendary singer Asha Bhonsle reflects on the time she spent with her husband, the trend-setting music composer R D Burman
IANS
S
inging legend Asha Bhonsle reveals she used to often fight with her late husband, composer R D Burman, because he would give the best of the romantic songs to her elder sister, Lata Mangeshkar. “He would give me numbers that used to have a lot of screaming notes like Piya tu ab tu aaja and Aaja aaja mein hoon pyaar tera. One day I confronted him with that. And he said that if I will refuse to sing those songs, then he will never compose such tunes ever. According to him, only I could do justice to those songs. So I had to give in,” Asha said at function organised for naming a road after the legendary composer, also known as Pancham. The road in R D Burman’s name is located in front of the house he lived in North Avenue, Santacruz area in Mumbai. Going down memory lane, she offered more glimpses into the trend-setting composer’s private life. She said: “As his wife, I knew the private Pancham like nobody did, even
Asha Bhonsle.
though we lived more like friends, as partners in our musical journey than as husband and wife.” She revealed that Pancham had only two passions in life. “One was, of course, music and the other was cooking. Since I am also a good cook, we often used to have competitions at home. That was the way he used to relax himself after thinking about music, composing tunes and experimenting with sounds,” Asha said. She also disclosed that the composer was completely blind to the material side
of life. “So much so that, one day, when he saw me wearing a diamond ring, he wanted to know the name of the gem I was wearing on my finger. When I told him that it was a diamond, he asked if the diamond really looked like that. You see, that was Pancham,” Asha recalled. The seventy-five-year-old crooner, whose close association with the composer started in 1966 with Teesri Manzil culminated in their marriage in 1980, said that she had known Pancham from the time he had assisted his celebrated
father, S D Burman. “In those days, whenever Burman da (S D Burman) offered me a song, I would ask him what was the tune like and he would tell me to learn it from Pancham. That happened again and again. Naturally, I would be upset, because Pancham was not the music director of the films I would be singing for. It was much later that I learnt that the tunes for those songs had actually been composed by Pancham, but he never sought credit for the same,” she said. Asha said that they had a happy life together for 14 years till he died in 1994. “But he died a sad man. Mostly, he was saddened by the changing trends in Bollywood music,” Asha said. As if to corroborate her statement, in the audio-visual (AV) presented at the function, filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra made a revelation. Chopra said that when he signed Pancham for his 1942: A Love Story in 1993, the music company he had first approached refused to buy the music rights of the film unless he replaced him with a new generation music director. “But I stuck to my stand and the results are there for all to see,” Chopra said in the AV. Commenting upon the the present Bollywood music scene, Asha said that Pancham, who ushered in the modern trend in Hindi film music, seeps through in most of the songs being churned out today. “Well, this is just my observation. Nobody should take it as a criticism. But when I hear these songs, I instantly recall where the notes and rhythms have been copied from. At such moments, I hum the original songs and become convinced that they have been copied from Pancham’s music,” Asha said.
Manyata gives Sanjay time off
I Sanjay Dutt’s wife Manyata has reportedly left for the famed Vaishno Devi temple in Jammu and Kashmir to pray, but minus her husband. She has left behind Sanjay to spend time with his three best friends, who live in different parts of the world. They were in Mumbai for the New Year and Sanjay was keen to spend some more time with them. “Manyata left for Vaishno Devi after their New Year’s party with some girl pals for three days. Initially, Sanjay, who never says no to his wife, agreed to come along. But then she saw his heart was set on enjoying the time he had with his buddies whom he rarely gets to see because of his schedules,” said a source close to the couple said. “These guys have been his closest friends from childhood and are no part of the film industry. Though he has many close friends in the industry like Suniel Shetty and Bunty Walia, these three non-film friends are Sanjay’s closest confidantes. He tries to get them to come over whenever he has some time off,” added the source. Manyata didn’t have the heart to drag her husband away to Vaishno Devi. “Though she really wanted her husband to accompany her, she didn’t want to deprive him of his precious time with his pals. She decided to make this trip to Vaishno Devi an all-girls’ thing while Sanjay chilled out with buddies, watched films and played games, back home before he resumes shooting later this week.” The year is a decisive year for the Dutts, Sanjay Dutt Productions is about to take off and they’ve signed some of the best directors in the business. “Ideally, Manyata would’ve wanted her husband to pray. But since he was in the mood to play, she let him be. There’s a perception that she has been alienating her husband from his pals. Manyata wants to end that.” Incidentally, the Dutts’ New Year party was not a low-key affair by choice. “They had invited everyone, but hardly anyone was in town,” said the source.

Pop Prince to release 3 albums in 2009
I Pop superstar Prince has lined up three albums to be released in 2009. According to thesun.co.uk, his first release Mplsound will feature more of a 1980s sound in which he collaborated with rapper Q-Tip and claims it was made using “new ways of recording”. The next release is Lotus Flower where more emphasis is laid on the electric guitar. The final release is Elixir and in this album he is joined by his protege Bria Valente. Prince said: “We got tired of waiting for Sade to make a new album. The music is nasty but it’s not dirty. There’s no profanity.”
Soderbergh’s Che Guevara biopic is cool and persuasive, but never gets under his skin
PETER BRADHSAW | GUARDIAN NEWS SERVICE
Director Steven Soderbergh (left) with actor Benicio Del Toro.
he first half of Steven Soderbergh’s monumental two-movie portrait of Che Guevara has arrived: opaque and enigmatic enough, probably, to count as a “diptych”. Those hoping for a rich, warm dramatisation in the manner of Walter Salles’s 2004 film The Motorcycle Diaries, about Che’s early life, will have a shock in store. For this is a very austere film which does not regard its job as getting under the skin of the world’s famous revolutionary, or finding out what makes him tick. This film only shows Che the public man, addressing his comrades over dinner, or addressing his soldiers in the jungle, or addressing the international delegates at the United Nations. Che never goes off duty in this epic, and those who stick with it over both movies may well be perplexed at how very little of Che’s life it covers. Starring Benicio del Toro as Che and Demian Bichir as Fidel, this first film shows him making landfall on Cuba with his fellow insurrectionists and then tracks his progress, in what feels like real time, until the victory of 1959: this action is interspersed with his later, sensational appearance at the UN in New York in 1964. The second film shows his long, agonised, failed revolution in Bolivia again, almost in minute-by-minute real time. (There is a faint resemblance, not unpleasant, to Woody Allen’s Bananas.) Neither film will shed any light on his feelings about the missile crisis, his renunciation

Eva Mendes envies Kate Winslet roles
I Hollywood actress Eva Mendes has confessed she is envious of British actress Kate Winslet for the roles she gets. Mendes says she greatly admires the acting skills of 33-yearold Winslet and wants to do the kind of roles the latter has done or is being offered, reports dailymail.co.uk. “I would steal Kate Winslet’s roles. All her roles. Not only is she the most amazing actress in the entire world, she’s done nude scenes in a lot of her films which shows she’s just fearless,” said 34-year-old Mendes. She added: “Her choices are impeccable. She literally can do anything. If she can just give me two of her roles, I’d be happy.” A still from the film Che: Part One. of Cuban citizenship and the apparent break with Fidel, or his aborted revolution in the Congo. The two films show what could, only slightly facetiously, be called the “Palm Sunday” and “Good Friday” parts of his life story: victory and downfall. It is a spare, almost ascetic manner of filmmaking, and yet the cool downplaying serves its subject well; certainly, it’s very different from the empathy of Salles’s approach. The simple accretion of detail has a cumulative effect. The film is elaborately restrained, with a kind of documentarian’s clampdown on dramatic or narrative temperature, and yet I found it involving. Steven Soderbergh’s cinematography and Juan Pedro de Gaspar’s art direction create a superbly persuasive sense of mood, time and place, though I wonder if Del Toro’s performance was too gruff. Che himself may well have been more fluent and educated, and more obviously charming, than this film makes him look. The only performance with which I can find fault is that of Catalina Sandino Moreno as his young guide. Moreno maintains a supercilious smile, and her body language, while she is under fire and in mortal danger, is quite ridiculously relaxed. For all its severity and reserve, Soderbergh’s Che is an adventure: massively serious and ambitious. It certainly underlines the filmmaker’s determination to maintain an absence of auteur identity: the director who made the Ocean’s Eleven movies and the remake of Solaris has come up with something very different from either. It is far from being a biopic, more a cinematic extrapolation of Che’s iconic status, and by that token it may exasperate some. Others will be engrossed by this flawed, sprawling, intriguing movie.
