Annual Reporting
David will be discussing his expectations around annual reporting with Principals and Directors in the first round of cluster meetings this term. This “ Annual Report Guidelines “ document that he has prepared for this discussion will then be placed on the NED website in the “What‟s new” section. The DECS web site http://www.decs.sa.gov.au/accountability/ under the „Reporting‟ menu provides information on the Commonwealth school performance information reporting requirements which need to be included in the 2006 Annual Reports. The „Essential requirements‟ document details the items required by the Commonwealth agreement and whether data will be provided by state office through the Site Data Overviews or will be locally sourced. The „Commonwealth Reporting‟ sub-menu provides a range of documents providing exemplars for reporting on each of the items which you may find useful. Note that there are no Commonwealth performance information reporting requirements for preschools. Site Data Overviews are expected to be ready to send out in early November but I will let sites know if that is not going to be the case.
NED Preschool Destination Data
An email has been sent to all stand-alone and school-based preschools asking them to provide the destination data for all children that have exited their preschool this year. This information is due back at the district office by Wednesday 22nd November. We‟ve been collecting these data in the North East since 2004 and the collated district overview provides valuable information for conversations about the promotion of public education and the development of partnerships between childcare, preschool and school.
Materials and Services Charges
Just a reminder at this budgeting time of the year that the legally enforceable standard sums for 2007 for Material and Services Charges will be $182 for primary students and $244 for secondary. This sum is the legally recoverable amount for schools that have not conducted a poll and gained written approval from the Chief executive prior to the issuing of invoices for the 2007 school year. Further information is available at www.decs.sa.gov.au/goldbook under the heading of Materials and Services.

Online Learning Resources
At the recent SAPPA conference Christine Hatzi – Principal of West Lakes Shore, attended a workshop about the Le@rning Federation. She wrote an article in the last SAPPA Primary Focus magazine about the workshop and why she felt like the only one who had not heard of “learning objects”. The Le@rning Federation (TLF) is an exciting and innovative project that employs emerging technologies to produce world-class online curriculum content to encourage student learning and support teachers in Australian and New Zealand schools. TLF is an initiative of the state, territory and federal governments of Australia and New Zealand. An information booklet was due to be sent to school along with a DVD/CD resource in September by which time all schools in SA should have free access to the repository being built for this resource which is owned jointly by all Ministers of Education and is ideal to be used with interactive whiteboards. This website will connect you to the federation http://www.thelearningfederation.edu.au/tlf2/ for further information.

There's also a changing writer in residence. Quotes and Quips According to a news report, a certain school in Bankstown, NSW was recently faced with a unique problem. A number of 12-year-old girls were beginning to use lipstick and would put it on in the washroom. That was fine, but after they put on their lipstick they would press their lips to the mirror leaving dozens of little lip prints. Every night, the maintenance man would remove them and the next day, the girls would put them back. Finally the principal decided that something had to be done. He called all the girls to the washroom and met them there with the maintenance man. He explained that all these lip prints were causing a major problem for the custodian who had to clean the mirrors every night. To demonstrate how difficult it had been to clean the mirrors, he asked the maintenance man to show the girls how much effort was required. He took out a long-handled squeegee, dipped it in the toilet bowl, and cleaned the mirror with it. Since then, there have been no lip prints on the mirror.
Reflections “People are unreasonable, illogical and self-centred. Love them anyway. If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish ulterior motives: -do good anyway. If you are successful, you will win false friends, and true enemies. Succeed anyway. The good you do today will be forgotten tomorrow. Do it anyway.” For contributions to the update please email Bet Petersen, Learning Band Coordinator, MiddleSenior Years on petersen.bet@saugov.sa.gov.au
