Ellen G. Yost

Ellen Yost is a graduate of Mount Holyoke College and of the State University of
New York at Buffalo School of Law where she was a member of the Law Review and
received her J.D. degree in 1983. Admitted to the New York State Bar in 1984, Ms.
Yost practiced corporate law with a large firm. In 1991, she founded the law firm of
Griffith & Yost in Buffalo which provided immigration, tax and corporate advice to
multinational corporations and individuals based in the United States and abroad. In
1998, Ms. Yost was admitted as a foreign legal consultant to the Balie to Brussel, the
Flemish Bar in Brussels. She concentrates her practice on business immigration law,
focusing on the port-of entry adjudication available to citizens of Canada under the
North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and on Canadian and European
companies sending employees to work in the United States.
Ms. Yost is a member of the Council on International Affairs and of the Task Force
on International Legal Services of the Association of the Bar of the City of New
York. She is President of the Working Group on Immigration and Nationality Law of
the Union Internationale des Avocats (UIA). Ms. Yost is a member of the American
Bar Association's Commission on Immigration, represents the ABA at the United
Nations Economic and Social Council in Geneva, and is a Fellow of the ABA. She
has been a member of the Council and an officer of the ABA's Section of
International Law and chaired the Immigration and Nationality and the Canadian Law
Committees of that Section. Ms. Yost was engaged in the establishment of the
International Law and Practice Section of the New York State Bar Association and
was a founding member of its Executive Committee. She also chaired that Section's
Canadian Law Committee.
For six years, Ms. Yost was the Liaison between the Western New York Chapter of
the American Immigration Lawyers Association and the Buffalo District Office of the
U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS). In 1998, she founded the Pro-
Bono Immigration Project of the Bar Association of Erie County that represents
indigent aliens detained at the INS Batavia Detention Facility. Ms. Yost is a former
President of the Buffalo Council on World Affairs. A frequent lecturer and author,
she is listed in the International Who's Who of Corporate Immigration Lawyers and
Best Corporate Immigration Lawyers.
