          MEMBERSHIP

3220048
The Standing Committee on Membership focuses on promoting the growth and inclusiveness of
the Real Property, Probate and Trust Law Section. This committee meets regularly, including
holding monthly teleconferences to discuss policies and programs that will increase membership,
especially among younger lawyers, and makes recommendations to the Council based upon the
same. Current initiatives of the Committee include:

A. Fellows Program
The Fellows Program represents a commitment by the Section to increase the
participation of young lawyers in Section activities. The goal of the program is to give
active members of the Young Lawyers Division (YLD) and other young lawyers active in
their local bar associations an opportunity to become involved in the substantive work of
the Section, to develop future leaders of the Section, and to enhance knowledge about the
work of the Section among members of the YLD and local bar associations. The Fellows
program includes an annual stipend to allow Fellows to attend Section meetings.
Each year, members of the YLD, minority bar associations, and state and local bar
associations are invited to submit applications for Fellows positions. Generally, Fellows
applications are due in early June and selections are made by July 1. Fellows
appointments are for two years and four Fellows are selected per year, resulting in a total
of eight Fellows serving staggered terms. To be considered for selection, a person must
have practiced in the probate or real property area for at least one year, and must
demonstrate an active involvement in professional activities. At least two of the four
Fellows selected each year will be minority applicants. Additionally, the Fellows
Subcommittee contacts applicants who were not accepted and, where appropriate,
informs them how to get more involved in Section activities. Thus, the Fellows Program
application process has potential to increase Section involvement beyond just those who
         are appointed.
Complete details on the program are included in Appendix A.

B. Young Lawyers Network — YLN
The mission of the Section’s YLN is to encourage young lawyers’ active
involvement in the Section and to increase young lawyer membership and participation in
the social and substantive activities of the Section through substantive and social
programming geared towards young lawyers. The YLN general membership is open to
all members of the Section who have been admitted to practice within the past eight years
or who are less than 36 years old. The YLN meets in conjunction with regular
Section meetings and also during the Joint RPPT-Tax Section meeting.

C. Law School Poster
In an effort to reach out to law students who might be interested in practicing in
the Section’s substantive areas of interest, the Membership Committee has implemented
an annual program focused on marketing to law students through the use of a poster and
contact cards that encourage and facilitate registration as a Section member. These
posters emphasize the benefits of Section membership and importance of real property
and trusts and estates law in real life practice.

RPPT Policy & Procedure Handbook 2005/2006 16.1
D. eCLE Membership Initiative
Recognizing that the Section produces excellent continuing legal education
through telephonic programs that are made available to both Section and non-
Section members, the Membership Committee implemented this initiative to offer free
Section membership to participants in these programs who are ABA members but not
       currently members of the Section.

E. Profiles in Membership
Active participants in the Section know the many personal and professional
benefits presented by involvement in the Section; however, a very small percentage of
Section members actively participate in Section meetings, programs, and initiatives. In
an effort to encourage greater active participation, the Membership Committee features
two members of the Section leadership in each edition of Probate and Property magazine.
These profiles serve the dual purpose of introducing Section leaders to the membership
and describing the impact of the Section on their careers. These profiles are also recycled
as promotional materials in recruiting new members to the Section.

E. Pathways Program
To be able to take advantage of the many benefits associated with Section
participation, it is helpful for members to understand the structure and operation of the
Section. To provide one source for Section members to find the answers to most often
asked questions, the Membership Committee created the Pathways Program. The
Pathways Program offers an FAQ memorandum and a slide presentation for each Section
meeting, clarifying Section operation for new and seasoned members alike. The Program
also provides an opportunity to recruit the attendees into more active participation, while
coordinating the efforts with those who attend the 1/2 day or full day Community
       Outreach program.

Memo to: Applicants for Fellowship Positions

Re: ABA Section of Real Property, Probate and Trust Law
                   Fellows Program - 2005-2007

Thank you for your interest in the Real Property, Probate and Trust Law (RPPT) Section Fellows
Program. The program represents a commitment by the Section to increase the participation of
young lawyers in Section activities. The goal of the program is to give active members of the
Young Lawyers Division or state or local bar associations an opportunity to become involved in
the substantive work of the Section, to develop future leaders of the Section, and to enhance
knowledge about the work of the Section among members of the Young Lawyers Division and
other young lawyers. We hope that, through their hard work, Fellows will develop themselves,
in the long run, into the future leaders of the Section.

The Fellowship appointment is for two years. We will select four Fellows from among the
applicants. To be considered for selection, a person (1) must have practiced in the probate
(including trusts and estates) or real property area for at least one year and (2) should be an
active member of the Young Lawyers Division (or an active member who has aged out within
the last three years, as calculated by the Young Lawyers Division) or demonstrated leadership
at the state or local bar level. As part of the Section’s commitment to diversity, at least two of
the four Fellows selected will be minority applicants.

We will make the following commitments to those selected as Fellows:

o To provide a subsidy, consistent with Section policies, for attendance at the Spring and Fall
Council Meetings of the Section, as well as any stand-alone meetings of the Committee to
      which the Fellow is appointed, up to $1,500 annually;

o To appoint a “committee chair” of a RPPT substantive committee who will expose the
Fellow to opportunities to do substantive committee work, including writing materials for
      CLE programs and/or to be submitted to Section publications;

o To appoint a mentor to suggest ways the Fellow can maximize opportunities for
participation and professional development within the Section; and

o To invite the Fellows to certain social functions reserved for Section leaders.

The commitment described above is a contingent one. To obtain reimbursement and continue
as a Fellow, the participant must:

o     Be or become a member of the ABA and of the RPPT Section;
o Submit timely and responsive written reports on his or her activities and progress as a

RPPT Policy & Procedure Handbook 2005/2006 16.3
Fellow, as requested, by the Fellows subcommittee; and
o Honor his or her commitments as a RPPT Fellow.

In return for the Section’s investment in you, by acceptance of the Fellowship, you would make
the following commitments to the Section:
                 Fellows’ Commitments Section’s Expectations

Work Plan: You will be expected to submit a work plan on how you will achieve these goals.
You must send at least a rough draft to your committee chair and mentor by Thanksgiving. The
work plan must be e-mailed to the Section Marketing and Membership Manager (Anne Steib)
and the Fellows Chair (Steve Gorin) by December 5, 2005. It will be circulated at the
December 15, 2005 Membership Committee meeting and then evaluated by the Fellows
subcommittee afterwards. Failure to adhere to deadlines in this paragraph or in item 3 of the
above chart may result in termination from the program.

Each Fellow may change his or her work plan, so long as the Fellows Chair is notified and the
changes are consistent with satisfying the program requirements. For example, suppose the
work plan includes helping with a CLE at the Section’s Spring 2006 meeting. If the CLE
Committee does not accept the committee’s program proposal, the committee chair will assign
another project to the Fellow or suggest that the Fellow’s work be turned into an article for the
Probate & Property magazine or RPPT Journal.

Feedback: Fellows should call their mentors and committee chairs from time to time to discuss
their plans and request feedback on their progress; the Fellows Chair is also available to answer

questions. The Fellows Chair will provide feedback from the Fellows subcommittee’s review of
work plans. At the end of Fellows’ two-year term, they and their mentors will have the
opportunity to make suggestions regarding the Fellows’ future involvement in Section activity.
Through their exposure to Section leaders and by demonstrating their excellent work, Fellows
will show their level of commitment, which should lead to requests for their help with
additional projects as they continue their participation in the Section.

Applying: To assist in the selection process, we ask that you complete the two-page
application LOCATED ON THE RPPT SECTION WEB SITE and return it to the Section by
Friday, June 3, 2005. The application is found at
http://www.abanet.org/rppt/section_info/fellows/home.html.

Fellows will be notified of their appointment by early July and will be expected to start
attending the monthly Membership Committee telephone conferences right away. If you have
any questions, please feel free to contact Steven B. Gorin at 314-552-6151 or by email at
