Mentoring Seniors: The Responsibilities
(1. The College Application Process; 2. The Senior Project; and 3. General Mentoring)

1. The College Application Process (adapted from The College Board, http://www.collegeboard.com/student/apply/the-application/23626.html) Please help your mentee to understand and honor the necessary items of this calendar.
The Summer Before Senior Year

Finalize his/her list of colleges. Be sure his/her list includes "safety" schools, as well as "dream" and "target" schools. Request college applications and informational packets. Organize materials into separate files by college. Keep a college calendar of all admission deadlines. If he/she plans on competing in Division I or Division II college sports and wants to be eligible to be recruited by colleges, he/she must register with the NCAA Initial Eligibility Clearinghouse.

If he/she took AP® Exams in May, he/she will receive the AP Grade Reports in July. September He/She will be assigned a college “coach.” His/Her coach will play a big role in helping get into college, so keep Ms. Adess, Ms Tate, and Mr Stonewall informed of your conversations and process and never hesitate in ask for their assistance. Meet to talk about his/her college plans and review his/her transcript. Get started on his/her applications right away if he/she plans to apply through an Early Decision or Early Action program. Deadlines for early applications tend to fall in October or November. In his/her Senior English class, start working on his/her college essays. Write essays that focus on personal experiences and make him/her stand out from the crowd. Update his/her resume—his/her list of accomplishments, involvements, and work experiences—with his/her senior year activities. His/Her resume will help complete the applications and essays.

Complete a request for recommendation forms to be given to teachers and counselors(This will be distributed in advisory). October Ask his/her counselor, teachers, and coaches or employers for letters of recommendation. Give them plenty of time to meet deadlines and make sure to provide them with stamped and addressed envelopes and request forms. Take the ACT again. Make sure his/her scores are sent to each of your colleges.

If he/she is applying under an Early Decision or Early Action program, be sure to get all forms in as soon as possible. Applying online might be the right option for him/her. November Submit early decision and early action applications on time. Work hard at completing his/her college essays. Proofread them rigorously for mistakes. Follow up with his/her teachers to ensure that letters of recommendation are sent on time to meet the deadlines.

Mail applications as early as possible for colleges with rolling deadlines (admission decisions are made as applications are received). December Try to wrap up college applications before winter break- if he/she hasn’t done so already. Make copies of each application before he/she sends it. Take ACT tests. Make sure his/her scores are sent to each one of his/her colleges.

Some colleges include his/her first-trimester grades as part of his/her application folder. This is called the mid-year grade report. Have his counselor send the grades to colleges that require them.

Complete the FAFSA as soon as possible. Attend FAFSA workshops until completed. February Contact his/her colleges and confirm that all necessary application materials have been received. Don't get senioritis! Colleges want to see strong second and third trimester grades. March Some admissions decisions arrive this month. Read everything he/she receives carefully, as some of it may require action on his/her part. Keep studying… He/She hasn’t graduated yet! Most admissions decisions and financial aid award letters arrive this month. Read everything he/she receives carefully, as some of it may require action on his/her part. Make a final decision, and mail the enrollment form and deposit check to the school he/she selects before May 1 (the enrollment deadline for most schools). Notify each of the schools to which he/she was accepted that he/she will not be attending in writing so that his/her spot can be freed up for another student. On the waiting list? Contact the admissions office and let them know of his/her continued interest in the college and update them on his/her second and third trimester grades and activities. AP Exams are administered. Make sure his/her AP Grade Report is sent to his/her college. Study hard for final exams. Most admission offers are contingent on his/her final grades. Thank his/her counselor, teachers, coaches, and anyone else who wrote him/her recommendations or otherwise helped with his/her college applications. Have his/her counselor send his/her final transcript to the college choice.

We also expect that students may seek you out for support outside of these two areas.
