4.1.4. Regular/special issue articles

Overview of articles for publication in regular or special issues. (proceedings, topical issues, etc.) The count of
S.I. articles is based on articles registered in our systems as 'grouped'. Such articles must be published
together as a group. Primarily this is used for special issues or theme issues, but it can also refer to linked
items in a regular issue, such as Letters to the editor and Replies, or Editorial comment to a specific article.
Therefore the number of S.I. articles may be over-estimated.

6.4. Articles not yet assigned to an issue

Articles in the process of being typeset or proof being checked by the author. The top entry refers to regular
issue articles. Articles designated for special issues are listed separately. The count of S.I. articles is based on
articles registered in our systems as 'grouped'. Such articles must be published together as a group. Primarily
this is used for special issues or theme issues, but it can also refer to linked items in a regular issue, such as
Letters to the editor and Replies, or Editorial comment to a specific article. Therefore the number of S.I. articles
may be over-estimated.

10. Author Feedback Program

The Author Feedback Program is a continuous research program monitoring the performance of Elsevier's
primary journals. It allows us to closely monitor author opinion and thus journal performance. Authors are
invited to rate a number of statements concerning their publishing experience. These statements are grouped
into areas, including reputation, peer review, production speed, publishing services, the editorial board and
impact factor.

10.1. Benchmarking performance

We also ask the author to rate another journal in which they have recently published. We then compare the
score for each area or factor for Journal of Great Science against the average of all other titles. The “average”,
which is a convenient benchmark, is zero on the chart. Scores above zero mean for that area, Journal of Great
Science is rated higher than average (scores above 5 would place Journal of Great Science in the top third of
journals). Conversely, factor scores below zero, mean for that area, Journal of Great Science is rated lower than
average (scores below -5 would place Journal of Great Science in the bottom third of journals).
Figures in brackets indicate how important each factor is to respondents, where 1=highest, and 8=lowest.

10.2. Journal Score

The eight factor scores are weighted according to their importance, and used to calculate a composite journal
score. This score is then compared to the journal scores of other journals in which the author also recently
published.
Note: The maximum potential journal score is 100, but in general, scores vary between 50 and 90. The
composite rating score for Journal of Great Science and the most frequently mentioned “other” journals are
charted below.

12. Glossary

Accepted
Articles accepted for publication by the editor(s) on the basis of peer review.
Active account
A ScienceDirect account that has actually made full-text article downloads in the reported month.
Article
Scientific text, as e.g. research articles or reviews. Items like e.g. news or announcements are excluded.
Author revision time
Time the author takes to revise his article on the basis of comments made by the reviewer(s). If the article
goes through several revision stages only the first is measured.
Cite
A footnote or reference published with a scholarly journal article.
Cited half-life
The number of years, going back from the current year, that account for 50% of the total citations received by
the cited journal in the current year.
Corresponding author
The authors of an article serving as point of contact for editors, publisher and readers. To determine the
country of origin of an article the country of origin of this author is used, even if co-authors reside elsewhere.
When articles are registered, the country of origin of the author may be not or not clearly indicated (which is
usually resolved in later stages). Such articles are listed in this report as country 'None'.
Cover date
Official date of publication as indicated on the front cover of the journal issue.
Current year
The ongoing calendar year. For reports generated in January, however, this refers to the year of last December.
Editorial page
Refers to pages in a journal issue that contain articles or other information, excluding prelims, indexes, tables
of contents, etc.
Editorial time
Time it takes on average for an article to go through the process of peer review and, if applicable, revision by
the author.
Electronic submission
Articles that were received via a web-based submission system. Articles submitted via e-mail or on floppy
disk/CD etc. are not considered 'Electronic' in this context.
Final disposition
Final decision taken by the editor(s) on acceptance or rejection of the article.
First decision
Decision taken by the editor on the basis of a first peer review. If more than one review is carried out, the date
of the last returned is taken.
Five Year Impact Factor
The five year impact factor is the average number of citations per paper calculated on a five year basis, e.g. the
2006 impact factor shows the average number of citations in the period 2002-2006 to articles published in the
same period 2002-2006.
This approach is different to that in Thomson Scientific’s published Journal Citation Reports (JCRs) and should
not be confused with the values given in those reports. Although the resultant values are different to the impact
factors in the JCRs, the relative positions of journals are essentially the same. The five-year impact is used
because more comprehensive data is available for this, and the longer time-frame helps to smooth out some of
the large fluctuations that are evident in similar measurements over shorter periods.
Five Year Uncited Percentage
This is the percentage of papers published in the five year period, leading up to the year specified, that remain
uncited. E.g. a 35% uncited percentage in 2006 means that 35% of the papers published in the journal
between 2002 and 2006 have not been cited.

The average number of times that an article published in a specific year within a specific journal is cited over
the course of that same year.
Impact factor
The number of current citations to articles published in a specific journal in a two year period divided by the
total number of articles published in the same journal in the corresponding two year period.
The impact factor is an important, albeit retrospective, indicator of a journal's quality. It is a measure of the
frequency with which an average article is cited during a particular period of time. Specifically, the impact
factor for any given year is calculated using the references in articles published in the given year to articles
published in the previous two years. Impact factors are usually published in mid-June (ie, it takes about six
months for the calculations and checks to be made).
Citation behaviours and impact factors vary markedly between disciplines, but it is valid to compare those for
journals in the same field and to note trends over time, and to assist this process Journal Citation Reports
categorize journals in a number of fields, within which they can then be ranked by impact factor. It is
important to remember that the impact factor is just one indicator among many; is retrospective; is calculated
annually; and is normalized for the number of articles published.
Issue
Physical appearance of a journal or its equivalent on the web.
Manuscript page
Typescript page as submitted by the author (see also Typeset page).
Page
Refers to all pages in a journal issue from cover to cover (covers themselves excluded).
Page view
Page views represent a single request for content initiated by a user. The following are examples of what
constitutes a "single Page view:"
     - Pages that contain multiple pieces of content.
     - Pages that deliver some other content (e.g. request pages that then deliver a PDF without the user
         clicking again).
     - Entire PDF's.
     - Multiple requests for the same page within 30 seconds of each other.
Production time
Time it takes on average for an article to go through the process of copy-editing, typesetting, proof review and
correction of the article as well as printing and mailing of the issue.
Publication time
Time it takes on average for an article to go through the refereeing and production processes.
Regular issue
Journal issue containing articles submitted individually, as a rule not bearing any relation to each other.
Rejected
Articles rejected for publication by the editor(s) on the basis of peer review.
Rejection rate
No of rejected articles as a percentage of the sum of rejected and accepted papers.
Society member full text usage
Full-text (pdf and html) usage by society members that have access via the society account.
Special issue
Journal issue containing papers relating all to a specific event or subject, e.g. congress proceedings, celebratory
Festschrifts or topical issues. The count of S.I. articles is based on articles registered in our systems as
'grouped'. Such articles must be published together as a group in a specific (regular or special) issue. Primarily
this is used for special issues or theme issues, but it can also refer to linked items in a regular issue, such as
Letters to the editor and Replies, or Editorial comment to a specific article. Therefore the number of S.I. articles
may be over-estimated.
Submission
Article sent in by the author for possible publication.
Subscriber categories
The following categories are included in the count: Concession Price Institutional, Concession Price Member,
Concession Price Personal, Deeply Discounted Price, Directly Billed Member, Full Price Institutional, Full Price
Personal, Off System Sale Institutional, Reduced Concessional, Reduced Non-Concessional, Society Billed
Member, Special Deal, Sponsor Concessional, Student Concessional, and Student Non-Concessional
Typeset page
A page as it appears in a journal issue, or the amount of text that fills such a page. A typeset page usually
contains more text than a manuscript page as submitted by the author. Therefore a manuscript of 10 pages
may result in a published article of, e.g., only 5 pages.
Usage
Full-text (PDF or HTML format) article usage by paying ScienceDirect Online accounts. Report includes the
following customer types: Article Choice, BioTech Select, Continued Access and Live Commercial. Please note
that when a trial account becomes live commercial, its usage is included retrospectively. As a consequence,

usage data for previous months may slightly differ from those reported earlier. Usage is measured with the
COUNTER protocol, the agreed international standard governing the recording and exchange of online usage
data. Some client relations are on the basis of on-site rather than online. The former adds 20-30% to the
overall usage figures
User account
ScienceDirect account that has some form of full-text access to (part of) the journal (regular subscribed,
backfiles, subject collection, etc.). Only On-line accounts, the ScienceDirect on-site clients are not reported and
constitute ~20-30% of all clients. More than one account in the same institute is uncommon, so the number of
accounts represent a true reflection of the number of universities, companies or government institutes that
actually have access to the journal.
Withdrawn
Articles not to be published for reasons other than peer review judgement.
World region
For statistic purposes countries of origin of corresponding authors are divided into 5 regions. When articles are
registered, the country of origin of the author may be not or not clearly indicated (which is usually resolved in
later stages). Such articles are listed in this report as country 'None'
Year-to-date YTD
Indicates that the values do not reflect the year as a whole, but up until the present.
