In "Among Clerks and Customers" he writes, "This morning I saw God-thevisible / awakening in the face ofthat salesclerk / at the Quick Stop paying for gas at dawn. / She was surrounded by the lost, their beers, / snuff, lotto cards and in the parking lot. their crack" (p. 34). Section three, an essav titled 'Naming the Animals-Moments. incorporates the idea of a guardrail as margin and furthers this idea of protection in a series of lovely images centered on bis mother's loving kindness.
