COURSE DESCRIPTION:

     This course covers basic flower shop arrangements, management,
     equipment, supply sources and various marketing techniques.




COURSE PREREQUISITE(S):

     None

RATIONALE:

     This course in combination with ORH 121 and ORH 122 will provide
     background for working in the floral industry.   ORH 245 is the
     business aspect of the industry.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

1.     To design and set up flower shop for business.
2.     Handle day-to-day operations.
3.     To promote the sales of flowers.

TOPICAL UNIT OUTLINE/UNIT OBJECTIVES:

At the completion of each unit the student will:

       I.      Introduction into a Flower Shop

               1.   Describe the personal qualifications of a retail
                    florist.
               2.   Define training procedures needed.
               3.   List different types of shops.
               4.   Identify the procedures in choosing a site and
                    location within a city for starting a business.
               5.   Identify the criteria for purchasing a shop.
               6.   Construct and organize an interior plan.

     II.       Techniques for Public Relations, Advertising and Buying
               of Goods

               1.   Draw a window display based on collected data.
               2.   Apply management techniques.
               3.   Assess how to buy perishables.
               4.   Realize the proper exterior lighting, parking,
                    attention getting shop.
               5.   Choose the proper advertising techniques.
               6.   How to work with publicity and public relations.
               7.   Identify proper preferences of customers, proper
                    image of shop and education of customers.

 III.          Services Required of Florists

               1.   Mark up for profit.
               2.   Organize the wiring service of flowers.
               3.   Formulate the delivery, credit and accounting
                    procedures.
               4.   Be able to screen for customers, credit accounts,
                    and keep records of the business.
               5.   Be introduced to a computer system.

The student will prepare a paper with their own flower shop
design.


COURSE REQUIREMENTS/EVALUATION:

At the completion of this course, the student will be
knowledgeable in the operations of a flower shop. A paper will be
written on designing a shop.
