FIREFIGHTER/EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN (E.M.T.)
SALARY RANGE: $3415.00 - $4151.00 per month
PLUS Additional EMT Certificate Bonus of 2-6% per month

THE JOB: This is an entry-level position in the City's Fire Department. The successful candidate will also be
required to maintain his or her E.M.T. certification while employed in this position. A minimum of two years must be
served in this position prior to being considered for any promotion within the Department.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Under supervision, participates in fire prevention activities for the
protection of life and property; participates in firefighting activities by setting up and using hoses, ladders, and other
firefighting equipment; assists in the maintenance and repair of firefighting apparatus and equipment; participates in
fire drills and studies firefighting techniques; assists in providing ambulance service, performs rescue and extrication
of accident victims, patient lifting and transporting, performs related work as required. Responds to fire, emergency
rescue, ambulance and public service calls; lays hose lines; assists in holding nozzles to direct stream of water on
fire; operates engine and pumping equipment; raises, lowers and climbs ladders; assists in conducting salvage and
clean-up operations; may drive fire apparatus on emergency calls; operates rescue equipment; administers pre-
hospital medical care; may drive ambulance on emergency and service calls; provides assistance and participates
as a member of an ambulance crew; assists in the repair, cleaning, maintenance, and testing of fire facilities,
equipment and apparatus; assists in the maintenance of clean and orderly condition in and about the firehouse;
studies and participates in training sessions on Fire Department rules and regulations, first aid,, fire hazards,
firefighting techniques and equipment, and City geography and hydrant locations; participates in fire drills and
exercises; participates in fire prevention activities; answers general questions from the public; may be required to
respond to fire and ambulance calls during non-duty hours; performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS: Knowledge of: the geography of the local area. Ability to: learn
procedures, principles and policies relating to fire inspection activities; learn technical firefighting principles and
techniques and principles of hydraulics applied to fire suppression; learn the location of hydrants and mains, as well
as major fire hazards; learn to drive a fire engine and ambulance with care and safety in accordance with traffic laws
and ordinances; keep records and prepare reports; understand and carry out oral and written directions; maintain
cooperative working relationships.
DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Any combination of training and experience which would provide the
required knowledge and abilities in qualifying. Completion of college level course work in Fire Science. High school
diploma or equivalent is required.
REQUIREMENTS: Possession of CA State Fire Marshal’s Firefighter I Certificate, Fresno County E.M.T. 1A
Certificate (required prior to employment), C.P.R. card, and possession of an appropriate California operator's
license issued by the State Department of Motor Vehicles. COPIES OF REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS MUST

Requires a very high degree of concentration for extended periods of time; ability to analyze and interpret data from
a wide variety of sources; ability to make connections from physical evidence and witness testimony; make
corrective decisions under stress; utilization of both strength and agility in the fighting of fires and handling
emergency medical situations including moderate walking, lifting of moderate to heavy moving objects (more than
100 pounds), handling a loaded fire hose; climbing, crawling, stooping and bending, high degree of hand/eye
coordination and ability to hear, taste and smell.
EXAMINATION PROCESS: Applications will be evaluated and applicants who appear to be most qualified in terms
of experience and training will be invited to participate in job-related examinations (i.e. written, practical, oral)
designed to test applicants for knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties and responsibilities of the job.
Each examination must be passed before proceeding to the next phase of the examination process. Prior to
appointment a background investigation will be conducted. Following initial offer of employment, employee will be
required to pass medical and psychological examinations administered by city physicians. The probation period is
