ROLEX IMS OFFSHORE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP 2002
Capri 18 - 25 May

Preparations are now underway for the fourth Rolex IMS Offshore World Championship which will
attract top yachtsmen and women from all over the world to the splendid waters of the Bay of Naples.
Previous editions of the Championship were also organised by the YCCS and took place at Porto
Cervo, Newport Rhode Island in association with the New York Yacht Club, and Valencia in
association with the Royal Yacht Club of Valencia. This year the competition makes a welcome
return to Italy where it will be held on the isle of Capri in collaboration with the Associazione Circoli
Velici del Golfo di Napoli and the Yacht Club Capri. As ever the Championship is being sponsored
by Montres Rolex SA Geneva and see the creme de la creme of offshore craft flocking to the Bay
between May 18 and 25. Entries close on April 1. At the moment 12 entries arrived from different
nations, that is an absolute record of partecipants in the Championship history.
Those already entered include King Re Harald V of Norway who will be racing in person with Fram
XV, ISAF Vice President George Andreadis (aboard the new Greek yacht Atalanti), Kahlbetzer of
Australia who won the last Sydney-Hobart with “Bumblebee”, the President of the International Maxi
Association aboard Alexia, Arien Van Vende of Holland with the new IMS Sotto Voce and
yachtsmen Uarshek and Cintra (America). While the authorities on the Isle of Capri, local operators
and the Yacht Clubs collaborating to stage the event prepare to welcome the teams, an extensive
programme of side events is also being organised to make the participants’ stay on the island as
pleasant and interesting as possible. The Championship will draw to a close with the prizegiving
ceremony at Capri’s historic Certosa.
In the meantime, the extensive renovation of the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda’s clubhouse continues.
The new-look luxury complex will open to the competitors in other events scheduled for 2002 in July.
