CONSTITUTION
Article 0001: Name
The name of this organization shall be: Society for
Undergraduate Math Students hereafter referred to as SUMS.

Article 0010: Purpose
The purpose of this organization shall be to bring together
students interested in mathematics, to facilitate
discussion and interest in the field of mathematics, and to
provide information about professional opportunities, and a
venue for presenting research in mathematics to peers.

Article 0011: Membership
Membership of this club will be open to all students and
faculty of UNM.

Article 0100: Officers
Section A:      This organization shall have 4 officers;
          these officers are: President, Vice President,
          Treasurer and Secretary.
Section B:      All officers must be students at UNM and
          have completed at least one math class at a level
          of >100.
Section C:      Terms of Office:
          Each officer shall hold their position for one
          fiscal year (July 1 to June 30).
Section D:      Duties
          (i) The President shall:
                a. Preside over meetings.
                b. Ensure each general meeting has a goal,
                   focus or activity. (Make sure meetings are
                   planned for.)
          (ii) The Vice President shall:
                a. Take responsibility for president’s tasks
                   in his or her absence.
                b. Inform all members of upcoming events and
                   meetings.
                c. Ensures good communication between
                   advisor, executive board, general members
                   and UNM community.
          (iii)       The Treasurer shall:
                a. Go to budget meetings and spending
                   meetings.
                b. Request appropriations when necessary.
                c. Manage funds.

          (iv) The Secretary shall:
                a. Keep a list of members in good standing.
                b. Manage list serve, website, and email for
                   the club.
                c. Make sure constitution and bylaws are up
                   to date and to bring them before the
                   executive board if they are not.
Section E:      Elections:
          (i) Elections will be held during the spring
                semester and will be completed before finals
                week. Elections will be conducted at one
                (and only one) meeting decided upon in
                advance by the current executive board.
          (ii)        Any member of good standing may
                nominate candidates for office or vote in
                elections.
          (iii)       New officers will be decided by a
          majority vote by secret ballot.
Section F:      Provisions for Removal of Officers
          (i) An officer failing to maintain membership in
                good standing may be removed at any meeting
                by vote of the general membership.
          (ii) An officer neglecting their responsibilities
                may be suggested for removal by the
                executive board and removed at any meeting
                by vote of the general membership.
          (iii)       An officer will be given the chance to
                make a statement before the general
                membership votes for removal.

Article 0101: Advisors
Section A:     The advisor of the Math Club shall be a
          faculty member of the UNM Department of
          Mathematics and Statistics.
Section B:     Duties and Responsibilities:
          The faculty advisor will meet with the executive
          board at least once a semester.

Article   0110: Meetings
Section   A:     General Meetings will be held twice a month.
Section   B:     Meetings will be announced by email.
Section   C:     Any Special Meetings will be planned by
            officers or the advisor(s) as necessary.

Article 0111: Operating Procedures

Section A:     A quorum shall be defined as all members in
          good standing present at any General Meeting.
Section B;     When applicable and consistent with the
          organization’s constitution and by-laws, the
          organization shall be governed by Robert’s Rules
          of Order.

Article 1000: Amendments
Section A:      This constitution and may be amended by a
           majority vote of the members present at any
           General Meeting.
Section B:      At a General Meeting, any member in good
           standing may propose an amendment to be voted on
           at the next General Meeting.

BY-LAWS
Article 0001: Membership
Section A:     Any eligible person wishing to become a
          member of this organization should sign at any
          General Meeting.
Section B:     Dues for this organization shall be free.
Section C:     Membership responsibilities shall include
          bringing thoughtful conversation and a
          willingness to learn new things to any General
          Meeting attended.
Section D:     Membership shall be terminated at the end of
          every year.

Article 0010: Executive Board
Section A:      The selection of officers shall be done by
          the rules stated in the Constitution.
Section B:      It is the responsibility of each officer to
          attend all general meetings with the following
          exceptions:
          (i) illness
          (ii) class
          (iii)      reasons pre-approved by remainder of
                executive board
Section C:      It is the responsibility of the executive
          board to provide leadership for the organization
          and to assure that meetings are run according to
          the constitution and by-laws.

Article 0011: Advisors
Section A:     The selection of the Advisor shall be done
          by the executive board.
Section B:     The advisor shall be responsible for such
          things as laid out in the constitution.

Article 0100: Parliamentary Authority
Authority shall be practiced as stated under operating
          procedures in the constitution.

Article 0101: Amendments
Section A:     These by-laws and may be amended by a
          majority vote of the members present at any
          General Meeting.
Section B:     At a General Meeting, any member in good
          standing may propose an amendment to be voted on
          at the next General Meeting.
