      a t R.S. Cipto Mangunkusumo (Hospital) is now w e l l e s t a b l i s h e d , o f f e r i n g
      personnel monitoring s e r v i c e s f o r a l l h e a l t h s t a f f working i n
      radiology departments i n t h e h o s p i t a l s i n J a k a r t a . The development of
      n u c l e a r medicine i s progressing w e l l i n Pertamina H o s p i t a l and i n Cipto
      H o s p i t a l . The Department i n Pertamina Hospital i s making s i g n i f i c a n t
      c o n t r i b u t i o n s t o biomedical research i n t h e f i e l d of chronic l e v e r
      diseases.

      Film badges and f i l m s were s u p p l i e d t o Nepal f o r t h e development of
      personnel d o s i m e t r i c s e r v i c e s i n h o s p i t a l s i n Kathmandu and o t h e r
      areas.

      I n S r i Lmzka, a s s i s t a n c e i s expected from t h e I n t e r n a t i o n a l Atomic
      Energy Agency f o r t h e development of r a d i a t i o n p r o t e c t i o n , radiology,
      radiotherapy, and n u c l e a r medicine.

      The t r a i n i n g of radiographers and medical p h y s i c i s t s and t h e o r g a n i z a t i o n
      of secondary standard d o s i m e t r i c l a b o r a t o r i e s progressed s a t i s f a c t o r i l y
      i n lPhaiZmzd.

5.4   Hazards t o Man from P e s t i c i d e s

      A c o n s u l t a n t was assigned f o r a period of two months t o t h e I n d u s t r i a l
      Toxicology Research Centre i n Lucknow ( I n d i a ) . H e a s s i s t e d w i t h an
      i n t e r n a t i o n a l symposium on " i n d u s t r i a l toxicology". WHO support was
      provided f o r the attendance of n a t i o n a l p a r t i c i p a n t s a t t h i s symposium.
      The c o n s u l t a n t a l s o advised t h e Centre on i t s research p r o j e c t s and
      a s s i s t e d i n t h e t r a i n i n g of n a t i o n a l s t a f f .


             6.    HEALTH STATISTICAL SERVICES AND INFORMATION SYSTEMS

      During t h e p e r i o d under review emphasis was placed on evolving t h e
      concept of n a t i o n a l h e a l t h information s y s t e m and d e f i n i n g t h e r o l e
      they should p l a y i n support of p r i o r i t y h e a l t h programmes.          It was
      s t r o n g l y f e l t t h a t country h e a l t h programming was an a p p r o p r i a t e means

      f o r formulating the WO programme. S t a t i s t i c i a n s assigned t o country
      and inter-country p r o j e c t s a s w e l l as Regional O f f i c e s t a f f p a r t i c i p a t e d
      i n t h e p r o g r a d n g of n a t i o n a l h e a l t h development plans and t h e
      subsequent formulation of p r o j e c t s , p a r t i c u l a r l y i n t h e planning of
      h e a l t h information systems i n Burma, Nepal and ThdZmzd.

      A WHO s t a t i s t i c i a n assigned t o an inter-country p r o j e c t developed t h e
      t r a i n i n g m a t e r i a l f o r n a t i o n a l workshops on country h e a l t h p r o g r a d n g
      t o be h e l d during t h e n e x t y e a r . She a l s o took p a r t i n t h e a d a p t a t i o n
      of t h e working g u i d e l i n e s f o r country h e a l t h p r o g r a d n g developed i n
      1974 f o r use i n such programming i n t h e Region i n t h e f u t u r e . A                  n
      attempt t o i d e n t i f y a minimum l i s t of items of information f o r use a t
      t h e s t a g e of d a t a c o l l e c t i o n and a n a l y s i s was made and d e t a i l e d
      g u i d e l i n e s were prepared f o r f u t u r e e x e r c i s e s i n country h e a l t h
      programing.

 I n pursuance of a r e s o l u t i o n passed by t h e Regional Committee a t i t s
 twenty-eighth s e s s i o n , t h e o b j e c t i v e s and a c t i v i t i e s under an i n t e r -
 country p r o j e c t on "Epidemiological S u r v e i l l a n c e and N a t i o n a l Health
 I n t e l l i g e n c e Systems Development" were redefined.

Short-term a s s i s t a n c e was provided t o Burma and I n d i a f o r developing
n a t i o n a l h e a l t h information systems.

The medical records o f f i c e r assigned t o t h e inter-country p r o j e c t
"Organization and Administration of H o s p i t a l and Medical Care Services"
a s s i s t e d BangZadesh, Burma and Indonesia i n s t r e n g t h e n i n g t h e medical
record a c t i v i t i e s i n some h o s p i t a l s i n t h e s e c o u n t r i e s . Another
medical records o f f i c e r continued t o a s s i s t Nepal.

During t h e y e a r , two long-term s t a t i s t i c i a n s took up assignments - one
joined t h e p r o j e c t "Organization of Health S e r v i c e s , Planning and
H o s p i t a l Administration" i n Bangladesh, and t h e o t h e r took up d u t i e s
a t t h e National I n s t i t u t e of Medical Research i n Indonesia.

The i n t e r - c o u n t r y p r o j e c t "Health S t a t i s t i c a l Methodology" supported
v a r i o u s a c t i v i t i e s such a s p r e p a r a t i o n s f o r t h e meeting of t h e Regional
C o r n i t t e e ' s sub-committee on country a l l o c a t i o n s of r e g i o n a l resources
and f o r t h e f i r s t meeting of t h e Regional Advisory Committee on Medical
Research (see S e c t i o n 8, Biomedical ~ e s e a r c h ) . The s t a t i s t i c i a n w i t h
t h i s p r o j e c t was involved i n t h e p r e p a r a t i o n of g u i d e l i n e s f o r
e v a l u a t i n g t r a i n i n g programmes f o r paramedical personnel and i n
programming t h e methods o f computing t h e d a t a f o r t h e WHO P r o j e c t
Management Information System.

I n i t i a l p r e p a r a t i o n s were completed f o r t h e Working Group on Lay
Reporting of Morbidity and M o r t a l i t y S t a t i s t i c s , which i s scheduled t o
meet i n t h e l a t t e r p a r t of 1976. This meeting w i l l b e a s t e p towards
implementing t h e recommendations of t h e I n t e r n a t i o n a l Conference f o r
t h e Ninth Revision o f t h e I n t e r n a t i o n a l C l a s s i f i c a t i o n of Diseases h e l d
i n October 1975, which s t r e s s e d t h a t WHO should a s s i s t c o u n t r i e s i n
e s t a b l i s h i n g o r expanding t h e system of c o l l e c t i n g morbidity and
m o r t a l i t y d a t a through l a y o r paramedical personnel.

A major aim of t h e Organization i s t o promote t h e development of t h e
types and numbers of h e a l t h manpower adequate t o provide h e a l t h
s e r v i c e s t o t h e m a j o r i t y of people. I n o r d e r t o meet t h e s h o r t a g e of
properly t r a i n e d h e a l t h p e r s o n n e l and t o c o r r e c t t h e imbalances among
t h e d i f f e r e n t c a t e g o r i e s of workers a v a i l a b l e , most of t h e governments
i n t h e Region are planning t h e development and u t i l i z a t i o n of h e a l t h
manpower, i n accordance w i t h t h e i r needs and s o c i a l and economic

resources, a s p a r t of t h e i r n a t i o n a l h e a l t h p l a n s . WO has given
a s s i s t a n c e f o r promoting h e a l t h planning and management p r a c t i c e s , f o r
