San Ramón is a very poor, mountainous municipality. Of the 30,000 residents, 26,000
live in remote hamlets. They survive by practicing subsistence agriculture, raising cattle,
and growing cash crops like coffee, corn, and beans. Unemployment and malnutrition
Only 20% of the youngsters in San Ramón attend school. Many parents cannot afford
the approximately $1 per year for basic school supplies. Schools are often crowded and
poorly equipped, lacking in textbooks, reference materials, maps and educational
supplies. Yet eager children walk long distances daily over muddy paths to learn to
read and write.
The mission of Sister Communities of San Ramón, Nicaragua: Through collaboration
between San Ramón, Nicaragua and its partner communities in the United States, SCSRN
promotes people-to-people connections and supports social/economic development
projects that build friendship, understanding, justice and respect for the Earth. Our
partner organization in San Ramón provides direction and focus for our projects. In the
United States, Sister Communities of San Ramón, Nicaragua is a 501(c)(3) non-profit
organization. All our work in the United States is accomplished by volunteers.
